Canes have lost their mind

The Carolina Hurricanes have traded defenceman Oleg Tverdovsky and the rights to defenceman Jack Johnson to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for defenceman Tim Gleason.

In 78 games with the Kings last season, Gleason scored two goals and assisted on 19 others.  The Kings re-signed Gleason as a restricted free agent to a two-year deal on September 17.

Tverdovsky scored three goals and chipped in 20 assists (12 on the power play) in 72 games with the Hurricanes last season.

Johnson, who the Hurricanes picked third overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, is a highly regarded prospect.  He tallied ten goals, 22 assists and 149 penalty minutes in 38 games for the University of Michigan last season.

Makes you wonder if there wasn't more going with Johnson then fans were led to believe.

If I am not mistaken. He turned down three different offers from the Canes. one of which assured him he would not be sent to the AHL.

 <-- since there's no jaw dropped emoticon

can't believe that, it's a steal for the kings. Johnson must have seriously ticked off the Canes. I'm also surprised because I'd think 29 other teams would have given even more then what the Canes got.

If this Johnson kid has any brains (which I haven't seen yet) he'd hurry up and go to the Kings and learn from Blake & Norstrom while they're still around.

Well, the 'Nucks should have been in the ring for Johnson..... I say Bieksa and Chouinard for Johnson and Oleg T would have been a nice swap. Imagine Bourdon and Johnson as a pair... Can't believe the Kings fleeced the Canes like that..... Unless Johnson is really a prick to deal with...

Go Blue!

Johnson is of course the driver of the trade, but Tverodovsky has also been a 50 plus point D-man 4 times in the NHL and all of those times were before the obstruction rules were put in place. He has not peformed as well recently, but if he can turn things around it'll REALLY make this trade a steal. Gleason appears to have good potential and Belanger is a decent 3rd line guy, but the Canes really did get fleeced on this deal - if Tverosdovsky regains his old form a great deal will get even better for the Kings.

I'm in the minority in thinking its a good deal for both squads. Carolina filled a couple of glaring holes at third line center and a top 4 defenseman, shaking off Tverdovsky's price tag to pay for them. Tverdovsky will help with LA's second unit. Deal works out for everyone.

what a bad move, I can't believe it. How can Gainey never give something for him.

I bet he'd have been interested in it if Johnson was from Quebec. The sad part of all of this is that those Johnson to Toronto for Antropov/defensive prospect + Tellqvist rumors that people made up might have actually been closer to reality than I gave them credit for.

If it had been a player who was NHL ready instead of a prospect, it may have worked. Carolina needed a guy who could play right away.

Kronwall, Cola, White, Bell, Harrison, Wozi. I know you'd have to package a couple of them, but I'd still do that in a heartbeat. Toronto would have been a perfect place for Johnson because they have enough depth at defense in their prospects that they can afford to wait for him to fully develop.

None of them are really proven like Gleason is, I do agree with you though. Maybe the east/west thing came into play a little as well.

How do you know the Kings won't be able to get Johnson to ink a deal and get out of Ann Arbor? Obviously Johnson doesn't like to go to Raleigh, or else why would he risk getting injured for another year of college play and turn down a one-way contract?

As for Bieksa, we are not going anywhere fast this season, so what if we have a shitty D. Bourdon and Johnson can anchor the team's D for the next decade. And if you can get Oleg T, he can more than replace Bieksa. Getting rig of the 0-10 faceoff wiz Chouinard wouldn't hurt, and can make the room for someone like Reid to come up.

Some of you guys are missing the boat on this deal. It is a Salary DUMP for Cap space. The Canes are getting rid of Oleg's Cap money for a future deal. Johnson trade value was also greatly diminished since he said he would stay in school for the next Several years.

Even with all that, it is a great deal for the Kings. They may suck this year, but they have several Blue Chip prospects on offense, defense & in the net. Dean L is building a future winner in LA much the same way he built SJ, with homegrown draft picks & young players.

Sucks to lose a prospect, but the Canes needed to get players for now, not later.

It's easy for everyone to have an opinion right now, but we should wait a few years and then see who the real winner/loser was from this trade.

Yeah, but Jack Jonhson is worth so much more than what they got. I still have problem to accept this trade is true. I realize we could had him Montreal for not so much.

Don't get me wrong, Jack Jonhson will be the best offensive defensemen in the league in 5 years. I would have give Komisarek and Latendresse for him.
