Long-Term Follow up on Vapor XXX Skates

Recommended Posts

Just curious as to how the Vapor XXX skates are doing. I haven't seen very many posts bashing them like I saw with the XXs so I'm thinking the consensus is pretty good?

My 705s are doing fine but I'm curious as to whether or not a stiffer and higher cut skate might benefit my skating. I've skated in a teammates Supreme 8000s but they were too narrow for me to really notice if the stiffness and extra eyelit really made a difference.

XXX's are an amazing skate, but after 18 months in them they're pretty close to being trashed. The boot is nowhere near as stiff as it was when i first got them. I've even cracked the shell in a couple places. The skates were an excellent fit and felt absolutely wonderful, but just didn't hold up. i'm hoping my one90's will do better. But anyway, yah depending on how much you're using them, try them or try a one90.

Well it's only been about 10 months, but my KOR Shift 1's are still very stiff...we'll see after another 8 months.

Bauer 7000. At least the pro stock version. Like freaking rocks.

I have been really looking at the One90s but I don't play as aggressively as I used to. Just beer league but I'm on the ice a lot teaching powerskating, skating lessons and reffing. It's hard justifying speding $800 CAD on a pair of skates for minimal hockey-playing usage. I think I just need to be convinced to spoil myself

For durability I've found that the best brands are Grafs and Eastons not necessarily in that order. That depends on the skate. The Z-Air composite skate is practically indestructable but much too stiff for most players. The Bauer 7000 also deserves honourable mention as well in this list of solid contenders. The newest Easton Synergy and Graf G series have upped the ante on this with their hard shell composite composition offering better protection and incredible lightness.

not to knock you or anything but how can you say eastons have the best durability, how many people have you heard of blowing up toe boxes on easton 1300 in just a few months of skating? yes some of eastons older skates were the best around but I just see them going in the toilet because there trying to go to light and durability is going to take a hit.

if you guys play 6 times a week, no way any skate can last 18 months, unless its a 7000 prostock, highest stiffness level

I only skate 2 or 3 times a week on average...sometimes much more if there's a weekend tournament or I end up playing pickup games, but 6 times would be an exception to the norm. I do however skate hard and I'm not a small guy at 6'2" 210 so the skates still have to be built well to remain stiff for a while even though I'm only skating 2 or 3 times a week. The V-Force boots I used for about 14 rollerhockey games in the summer are quite a bit softer than the KORs (although I think they started out that way...but I think they're softer than what they started at as well), but still have support. If I skated in those for 18 months 2-3 times a week I think they'd be pretty damn soft, but I believe the KORs will still be going strong. Some skates just maintain their stiffness and have better durability than others. I've never used XXX's myself, however; I do have a teammate who has used them for 2 years and really likes them, but is now looking for another pair as they're starting to get soft. He also skates about 2-3 times a week, but is smaller than I am at about 5'8" 170lbs (approx.). Another teammates XX's are VERY soft after a couple seasons and he's now in one90s - he's about 6'0" 185lbs. He was happy with the XX's while they lasted, but likes the one90s better now that he's used to them.

Yah the one90's took a good ice time to get used to skating in. I'm on the ice about 4-6 times a week and i absolutely love my one90's as they are very stiff and responsive. i've heard a lot of ppl say they are too stiff, but i personally think they could still get stiffer as right now, they just about right. As for shelling out the extra 150, i'd say its worth it. Specially if the one90's last longer, which i'm not saying the will, but i've heard they will.

funny story, a guy at cyclone taylors told me you could heat the boot as many times as you want to and it will never break down. At the time i had the bauer bake sheet for one90's in my back pocket and it clearly says up to 3 times. Apparently these guys are convinced this boot is invincible.

the one90's a great skate aslong as it fits your foot that can go with any skate out there. The XXX I found has gone downhill quite aways since it first came out due to the fact that its being made off-shore now so its not going to be th same last that was used in canada on the original Vapor XXX skates. Id say a better boot would be like the RBK/CCM or the synergy 1500's havent had any major issues with any of the boots.

however i notice many more xxxs out there in the nhl and at college

Where many players get free or discounted skates. Of course with that many top players using the skates they must be very good performance wise for those players or they wouldn't use them, but that doesn't necessarily mean their long term durability is great.
