In what order do you put on your gear?

Recommended Posts

Over the years I've eventually come down to this:

  • Put on jock
  • Attatch socks to jock (velcro or whatever you use)
  • Put on pants
  • Put on skates and do them up
  • Put on shin pads, placing the tongue underneath
  • Pull down socks and tape them tight
  • Put on shoulder pads
  • Put on elbow pads and slash guards
  • Jersey
  • Helmet
  • Gloves

Just to be comprehensive...

I do exactly the same.. only thing that sucks is when you have new socks, the bottom of the sock really doesn't wanna stretch over the knee pad

I love the "tongue in or out" discussion. Go with whatever feels better; not what looks better. Only a faygo would care about the appearance out on the ice rather than how it feels.

Well I'm taking my purse and going home then. I traded in a pair of Jofa elbows because the cap just stuck out too damn far, and I felt like an idiot out there with these huge elbows.

If it felt good to me to wear my tounges out I certanly would but it feels as though it would give me lace bite and it feels very uncomfortable probably because I like and have to big of shin pads.

I think you need to put your tounges out instead and that will get rid of your problem. Plus it looks better.

Actually, my daughter just started putting her tongues under her shin pad this year. OTG was looking at a vid of her skating and said "how come she has her tongue hanging out... tell her to tuck it under her shin pad". I asked why and he said (I'll have to get him to check this to make sure I'm not misquoting him) it would increase her stability and help her skating improve... Left out, the tongue does nothing to support you and can make the skate looser around the ankle.

Anyway I told MissD and although she was initially a bit sceptical that it might impede forward flex, she immediately tried it out (OTG's word is gold in our house LOL). She said it felt strange at first but DID make a difference in her skating and her leg and foot felt like they were working more as one unit and it didn't impede her forward flex at all.

If you step back and think about it, it doesn't really make sense that the skate manufacturers design skates with these big tongues just for the asthetics of looking good flopping over your skate. Good heavens, the skate would probably be LIGHTER with a shorter tongue (LOL, that's for you light freaks). Likely, they've designed them longer for the express purpose of tucking them under your shin pad.

Up until about a year and a half ago I had always put my tounges into my shinpads. I tried them out one practise and I had wayyyy more mobility and I felt like I could move my feet quicker and I could go faster so then I ended up keeping them out. Also the fact that I thought it looked better and that most of all the good players in the NHL were them like that also helped my decision. Haha.

Well, fine if you feel you have more mobility. However, I hesitate to go with "most of all of the good players in the NHL wear them like that". On a grammatical basis alone it is suspect...lol

People following the fashions and foibles of NHL players have always amused me. Whenever NHLers are interviewed and asked WHY they do or use something they inevitably say something along the lines of "I dunno I've been doing this since I was 12 yrs old and, um, that's just the way I have always done it. Um, guess I'm just used to it. Wouldn't want to change it now"

Gotta love bio-mechanical proof like that!

Most, if not all, defencemen in the NHL tuck their tongue under their shin pads to allow their shin pads to lay low and not get their legs broken or bruised when blocking shots.
