Don't buy colored Tuuks from TotalHockey.net

Recommended Posts

I bought a set a month or so ago and have had them on for about 2 weeks (5 games and 4 practices so far). They look like crap already.

I questioned them directly before purchasing: "are they painted...NO" "are they dyed....NO, they come directly from Bauer".

In fact, they are dyed because I'm getting the normal wear on the holders and you can see the white color just under the surface of the blue tuuks. If they were in fact injection molded using blue color pigmant balls they would be colored throughout, not just on the surface.

I'm not going to sacrifice my safety for the neatness factor. I'd don't know how the holder properties changed during dying so they are coming off.

And I went and had my skated sharpened today and both runners were tweaked, which I've never had a problem with before and wasn't there after install (installed on XXXs using existing holes). Could be from the colored holders or...?

I haven't had any problems with mine!

Did you ask them if they would replace them?

That's pretty intresting because I've worked with about 5 pair so far and the color goes through the plastic. Do you have any pictures? I haven't had any problems with them whatsoever. If your holders were "tweaked" that would come from the mounting, even if they used to existing holes, there is some play in the holder that would allow the holders to be twisted. Take pictures so we can see what the issue is.

The guy that sharpens my skates...thats all he does is sharpen hockey skates (and other things, but primarly hockey skates). Very well known in the Minneapolis area.

Anways, he said the blades themselves were both tweaked but the holders were ok. He used a couple devices to check them. Maybe is the perf. blades or something. I hate the damn things but will use them for a couple months until they wear down some so I can run the solid ones.

Here's the pics...clearly not blue all the way through.

It really sounds to me like you made a pretty extreme post about the holders when it was really a blade issue. The thing I don't understand is if you have a nick on your holders does that hurt your performance? Answer = no . When you get black on your white holders do you become irrational?

Sorry guys, but the point was that these are dyed and not injection molded. I don't know much about the process but I did have some exposure to it during a Material Science class in college for Mech Eng. and if they were in fact injection molded blue it should be the same color throughout, not just on the surface.

So, if you want dyed blades don't pay $90 from totalhockey.net when you can do it yourself for $5 (or less).

Well I am still happy with mine as they look cool. Bottom line is if you buy a $200.00 dollar stick breaks you cry about it, but if your holder gets a knick in it big deal you can still play the game. Good luck with your Science degree as it sounds like your well on your way to becoming a Chemist. Does that $5.00 dollars also include the new holders you got? If it does I am going to buy it from you from now on. Also does that $5.00 include the mounting and rivets?

call them and complain, worst thing they can do is tell you they won't/can't do anything about it. If you do call them and they respond(good or bad) you should add that in this thread.

Totalhockey is actually based out of St. Louis, and i routinely walk into the stores around here. if you want, i could talk directly to the Owner of Total Hockey, being that he and my father have become friends.

Also, from the pictures, could it be that the white spots are just stress marks?

i know that sometimes when plastic is cut, and always when it is stretched, it turns white. i actually have white spots from cuts on my Clear LS2Powers.

From the pics (thanks for providing those, Shawn), it looks like solid white plastic, not stress marks. If we take their word that it comes like that from Bauer, then we should extend this warning to all blue LS holders.

For those wondering, people elect for colored holders because of their color. Just because you're indifferent to color and wear, doesn't mean everybody else should be. Shawn wanted holders that are blue, even after a few nicks, and did not get what he expected. It's not the same as puck marks you can rub away with your thumb. He is right to be unsatisfied, and his experience tells us more about the blue LS holders out there so he's right to post it.

Holders are holders. No matter what color they are, you skate all the same. But the dying process, by which chemicals seep into the plastic, may compromise their durability. It may deteriorate the plastic, so why risk your safety to find out?

I don't see what it helps to belittle the issue. Perhaps Shawn should chuck his skates and take up ping pong. Problem solved! Don't participate if you don't care. Just walk away. This isn't jury duty.

I also purchased colored Tuuks from total hockey...After the first skate I had numerous nicks that were not deep at all. White shows through on all of them. I took an old pair of Tuuks that I had lying around and dyed them myself using instructions from previous posts (RIT Dye). My $5 dye job was far superior to Total Hockey's $90 effort. I purposely scratched the pair I had dyed with a screwdriver and no white was present. Only after torquing down very hard with the same screwdriver was I able to dig deep enough to see white.

Be wary of TotalHockey, you can probably get much better results doing it yourself.

you're missing the point.

"I questioned them directly before purchasing: "are they painted...NO" "are they dyed....NO"

he was assured this would not happen, he was assured the holders are not just white holders coated or dyed blue.

Wouldn't be the first time a sale associate lied/didn't know the answer.

The guys at Totalhockey did not give correct info. He has a reason to be pissed. If you take a factory produced black Tuuk and play with it, does the Tuuk show through as white after a few games? No. This forum is about sharing info like this for guys whom this info matters to. Some guys would be pretty upset while others would not give a hoot. I'm glad Shawn came forward with this thread. Thanks for the info.
