What's with American Announcers?

Watching the Detroit/Philly game on OLN (via TSN). Not sure who the guy doing color with Emerick is...but he just used the term "Mastodonic" to describe 2 saves made by the Detroit Goalie (MacDonald)...in context it was:

"He just made 2 Mastodonic saves"...

What does a prehistoric relative of the elephant have to do with goaltending?

Also...(and this is a generalization) Why do American Announcers use terminology from other sports when they are doing hockey games. They always refer to Quarterbacking the powerplay...and he used the term "jumpshot" to describe a tip in goal that Forsberg scored...(it was a tip in off a goalmouth scramble).

Now, I guess the other sports terms are to help new fans understand...The QB of the powerplay...I suppose that will help a fan understand the importance of the pointman...but why not just describe and teach new fans the "hockey terms" instead of relating it to other sports?

How do you guys find US announcers & what do you guys think when you get to watch a Canadian broadcast (TSN or CBC)...am I just biased because I'm Canadian?

I watch almost evry devils game and I am pretty used to the terms that they use.I also play basketball and watch football so i may be so used to it that I probrably don't notice or catch what they say about other sports.

Could the other guy be Chicco Resch?

Didn't see the game, but "2 mastodontic saves" sounds like something Joe Benanati would say.

He is the Caps play by play guy, does a lot of versus stuff, but if it was the colour guy, then I don't know

I for one am impressed with Hockey announcers above any other sports announcers. Anyone who can pronounce the different last names of hockey players has to be doing something right. With out a doubt Gary Thorn(e) is about the best.

I’m guessing that as far as using other sports terminology, perhaps they are trying to expand the fan base here. It is easy to relate that a person quarterbacking is running the play here in the states.

As far as “Mastodonic†save I would think that he was saying “huge save�??

That color guy was horrific. It wasn't Chico Resch (he only does Devils games, not national TV), I'm not sure who it was.

He also described a pass as "pungent"

Do you mean color commentator or announcer? The color guys are generally ex-players or ex-coaches, and quite often Canadian, so I'm not sure who to blame for the Americanized terms.

i hadn't really thought of it that way...In this case it was the color guy...maybe it is pressure from the networks for them to do it that way...

Like I said..it may just be a bias I have to Canadian Commentators/Broadcasts. Is Chris Cuthbert still doing the odd NBC game? He is AWESOME!

Darryl Reaugh was the color guy, and he was painful to listen to. I always love listening to Doc Emrick though. I understand what the terms meant and why he was using them, but they just sounded stupid. Most of the Vs announcers sound stupid, but that's beside the point. I really enjoyed listening to HNIC on Vs last year during the playoffs. Their announcers were far better than any of the hockey announcers that I've listened to recently (for the most part).

During the game tonight Reaugh was talking about Leighton's pads not matching his jersey because he started the year off with another team. He mentioned how "the carpet didn't match the drapes". He started laughing before he even finished.

The Quarterback runs the offense in football. Someone "quarterbacking" the power play would be referring to someone running the power play. The same would go for a defense man back in his zone making an outlet pass because he has everyone in front of him to choose from.

Some of it may be to help new fans understand what's going on, but I think a lot more of it just has to do with American cultural terms.

Razor Reaugh always does his color like that. It is simply a love/hate deal when you are watching. I like it as its different than the usual "I was at the pre-game skate today and talked to Joe Fourth-Line about his increased ice time now that Billy Second-Line is out with a lower body injury."

I'm still trying to figure out how Drew Whatever got the Dream Job as Color guy on the second HNIC Saturday game. Between him and Jimmy Fox from the Kings, there must be something in California air that increases your lung capacity to never shut up and blabber on and on.

Jenerette is a God to the Sabres fans here in Buffalo. There are as many Facebook groups dedicated to him as there are the actual team. If a game is on Versus, people put the TV on mute and listen to his radio call. The guy's energy is unmatched by any announcer in any sport. People around here joke that he's going to have a heart-attack in the booth. His calls are sometimes a little weird, and when they are they're usually pretty funny - I remember a couple weeks ago, when Gaustad (nicknamed 'Goose') scored, Jenerette yelled "Those of you listening in your cars across Western New York, give a honk for the Goose!"

Hell, people around here are boycotting the new Sabres ice-cream, called "Top Shelf," because it doesn't have any cookie dough in it...They see it as a disrespect to Jenerette, who screams "Top shelf where momma hides the cookies!" when someone snipes an upper corner of the net.

Daniels the TV play by play guy for the Wings can get annoying, but good ole Mickey makes up for all of that. The radio guys do a pretty good job even though Paul Woods sometimes gets a case of the "um's"

Rick Jenerette is so awful that my ears bleed just from hearing him speak for two seconds during a highlight package. I think if I had to listen to him for a whole game, I'd become a basketball fan to escape him.

Also, American announcers unquestionably suck, but it's not like the Canadian ones are all great either. I.E. The Toronto Maple Leafs cheering section that is Bob Cole, Harry Neale, and Joe Bowen. I'm all about Jim Hughson (he's kind of the Canucks cheering section, but it's less offensive when it's the Canucks than when it's the Leafs, and if he's announcing a non-Canucks game, he's great - used to be a great baseball announcer too), Chris Cuthbert, Gord Miller, and Pierre McGuire. Also, nobody has mentioned it, but the St. Louis Blues got a valentine from me this year for giving John Davidson a job, and getting him out of the broadcast booth.

i think doc emerick is pretty horrible... if you werent watching a game and you listened to him describe what was going on, you'd have no idea what was going on. it also doesnt help that hes got an annoying voice.

He's pretty good. I remember when he used to do the Sportschannel color for the Forever .500s. One of the best things I saw was this fall when the Stars were on CI with a local channel telecast. During the commercial timeouts they stayed with the game feed and Reaugh and the play by play guy were a riot. The camera guys were putting endowed women on the monitors for them and they came out with a couple gems. Reaugh's best was, "Holster those."

Mastodonic is synonomous with huge, I dont see a problem in using it. I have NEVER heard any announcer say anything about a jumpshot to parallel a tip in... it dosent even make sense.
