Doctor Hook

Funny thread from my beer league message board

Recommended Posts

I play in this league, although who knows which rink nthey are talking about as NESHL runs leagues out of 6 (?) rinks now I think. Most of the refs we have in our division are great guys. Actaully, most of the teams are good guys too. Has anyone else ever noticed that the guys that bitch about the referees are generally the ones TAKING penalties? I find nothing more humiliating than when you have a guy on your team who whines to the refs. It's f-ing embarrasing.

Agreed, I've been playing in the league for 5 years and at this point I know each ref and exactly how they'll call (or not call) a game. Each has their nuances and that's just the way hockey is. Sure a ref may blow a call every so often or let something go, but to spend this much energy worrying about the refs instead of your own game is silly.

A little off topic, but how much are the refs getting paid for each game by you guys. By me in NJ, the two adult league refs for each game get $65 each.

Wow. I actually have no idea, for some reason I always thought they got paid the same as beer league softball refs, like $20 apiece. It's probably comparable, it's a fairly well run league.

Dr.Hook,

Which rink are you at? I am in walpole on wednesdays. Coming from RI, you must be at walpole too, no?

Hell, I take the time to get to know all the refs so I do not have to bitch to get calls! On wednesdays, we have 4 guys that are great (Jamie, Tim Sheedy, Sully and the other Tim). The only guy I can not stand is the fat guy that looks like Peter Griffin from the family guy.

What other leagues are you in in the area? I only get out once a week now for walpole, and then down at the mount fot the 10 week league Pete Belisle puts together...

Yes, Walpole and Foxboro depending on where the league books us. The regular crew of refs (the ones you mentioned) are good dudes.

I tried to start a team in the Cranston league but to no avail. How do I get in with the Belisle league?

The mount league is tough to get into as a single. When was the last time you were on that sheet? It is f-ing tiny!

Anyways, Pete started the league years ago and we always had minimum of 6 teams. Nowadays we get 8 teams and the bottom 2 teams are always changing, but the core 6 teams are pretty set. There is a team of ex-mount guys who are a bit older (pete's squad) a younger group of mount/ri kids, the farrells from burriville throw a team in, there is normally a team of kids from URI/Bryant/Johnson Wales, a team of woonsocket guys.

I will ask pete if he knows of any teams looking for guys. It is a great schedule. 12 games in 8 weeks, you get a few weeks with two games. Tuesdays - Thursdays. Starts right after the 4th of July and is wrapped up by end of August to allow guys to go back to school, or off to minor league camps.

Please do not take any offense, but at what level are you playing now? The Mount league is a pretty good mix of talent, but at the high end there are D1, guys from the minors and occassionally you get a current or ex-NHL'er on the ice (Berard, Jillson, Dennis Vaske)

Um...yeah that'd be way over my head. I play D league. But thanks for the info, man.

No worries, that has been the problem with the league is some teams have entered without realizing exactly what the level of play has been, and it consistently gets better and better, expecially since pete set it up so guys can get on the ice fairly regularly and be back on campus/camp by the time the league runs it's course.

You ever get out to 146 for afternoon shinny? I am thinkign about checking out the friday skate over there in the next couple weeks. Once a week is not enough...

No but let me know how it is and maybe I'll check it out sometime.

And yeah, I could play hockey every night if I could B)

I only have one problem with referees... consistancy. If you're not going to call something then continue to not call it, if you're calling everything, continue to call it. I can't stand when they don't call anything until the last 5 mins... I'd appreciate a memo first.

Geez, that whole thread was a bit embarassing.

As far as the ref responding like that to criticism, aren't we supposed to be a bit above that? The whole "take the high road" thing?

Let the guy vent, I know in my case I just figure that I'm not as bad as others may say I am, but I'm also never as good as I may think I am!

Thread has since been removed from the message board. The only thing it accomplished was to embarass those two assjacks further.

Just shut up and play hockey. If you get hacked, then handle it like a man. 95% of real hockey players would do the same.

The problem with not calling something is that it usually leads to an escalation of violence. In a beer league, that's just not acceptable. Call the penalties just like the book tells you and games work out pretty well. If everyone does that, the league gets cleaned up pretty quickly and everyone moves on. It only takes one ref to screw things up by not calling it that way though.

Vaske? I havent heard that name in awhile..How did he end up out East?

On a side note, do they still play for North American Championships as far as senior leagues go? I remember Buck's Furniture being pretty good when I was a kid or the Warroad Lakers.

anyone have the thread saved in their cache files? i'm curious.

Short story long, some whiner gets on the board and bitches about the refs, real insulting-like. A ref hops on the thread and returns the favor (in the process pretty much shattering the single-post record for most spelling and grammatical errors since Al Gore invented the Internet) and the two went back and forth like a couple of 11-year-old school girls on MySpace. A few random people hopped on the thread to call them both 'tards, then the thread was finally removed because it accomplished nothing, save for embarassing the two mouthbreathers to begin with.

Very true. Things can get real ugly real fast if players think the other team is taking liberties and getting away with it.

As a side note, we had some crappy officiating at my last game. Three different times the referees completely failed to blow the whistle when the puck was controlled by a team with a delayed penalty. Three! The first time, we had a penalty indicated on us, we clear the puck out of our zone and naturally ease off, expecting a whistle. Nothing. They come right back into the zone. Okay, no big deal, the ref just missed the touch; it happens. Except that it takes full minute (and 3 or 4 touches by our guys) for the ref to finally figure out what that shiny silver thing is for and blow play dead. (Not sure what the other ref--who's usually not such an idiot--was doing; I was a little busy.)

Next period, same damn thing. Penalty on us, someone swats the puck out of the slot into the corner, no whistle, another 1:30 of free 6-on-5 for them.

Third period, and this is the one that really pissed me off, delayed penalty on them. The puck is at the right faceoff dot in our zone; my defensive partner picks it up and takes it around the net, not realizing that the goalie is sprinting towards our bench. Extra attacker comes on, but a forechecker comes in, steals the puck off my partner's stick, and shoots it into our net. No whistle. The other team -- who is at this point down by one goal -- celebrates. Our captain goes ballistic. Cue a two-minute conference between the two refs to figure out whether that should be a goal or not. Finally, they manage to get a spark between the one-and-a-half brain cells they apparently have between them, and declare it no goal.

The explanation after the game was that the one ref (widely known as the worst in our league) believed that as written, the rules required you to have and maintain complete control of the puck to get a whistle on a delayed penalty. As in, one-time passes = no control, no whistle. One-time shots = no control, no whistle. Cleared the puck without stopping it = no control, no whistle. Never mind that in no league in the world is this the actual standard, and watching a single period of professional hockey would be sufficient to disabuse one of this particular bizarre idea. Never mind that he's never called it this way before, in any previous season I've played.

I try hard to be fair to refs, I know they get a lot of crap and they do the best they can, and honestly I think our league refs are generally good, but this moron was just inexcusable. It was the worst-reffed game I've ever seen.
