Why is it that Tontos team is named the "Maple Leafs". Proper english would be Maple Leaves, is there a story behind this, or just poor grammer? Is it the Canadian way to spell it?

I've heard 2 explanations. One is Conn Smythe just liked the way it sounded when he bought the team in 1927. The other is that it is a part of a longer name, The Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Club. Since this is the "name" it is treated like one, and the "Leafs" becomes grammatically correct.

I've heard the explanation that Conn Smythe's division or something like that when he was in the military was the Maple Leaf division, so he called his hockey team the Maple Leafs in honour of the military group.

The real answer is people in Toronto aren't too bright!!

(Uh oh...those could be fightin' words!! Go Canucks.)

This was my original assumption.

In this case, the word "original" can be considered interchangeable with "correct."

you would have loved to be at the sabres game last night. They all start with this "OVER-RATED OVER-RATED" chant...and then their team falls on its face and gives up a 4-1 lead. One of the funniest things I have ever seen.

Funny that the Leafs fans can make that much noise at a Sabre game.

Sabres fans have a hard tiem getting tix to those games with the number of Leaf fans that go across the order.

It's gotta be 60-40% (Buf-Tor) fans

Buffalo fans getting the tickets isn't really the problem. The problem is tickets in Toronto are so expensive that the die hard Leafs fans can't/won't afford them. But they will pay a ton of money (relatively) for tickets here in buffalo. So all the season ticket holders here sell them. I sold my tickets to 3 leafs games this year, and payed for half of my $900 season tickets.

But that being said, the leafs games are generally some of the first to sell out for the year, because the day the tickets go on sale, large groups from toronto end up bying 20 tickets at a time and then just resell them up there.

60-40 is a pretty high estimate though. I'd say it is closer to 75-25, The toronto fans just go insane. I don't mean to bash on the leaf fans, but after having season tickets, and having gone to several leaf/sabres games over the years, there aren't any fans who get as drunk, and act as insane as the leafs fans do in HSBC.

Because I said anything bad about the Sabres?

Touchy, touchy

You certainly did not imply the best thing about their fans

Every team has *SOME* bad fans that deserved to be trashed.

I'm not a fan of all the Sabre fans who have seemingly come out of the woodwork now that they are a decent team again. They carry alot of fair weather fans along with Pitts.

but the devils have been a good team through out the 90s and on, some might argue even earlier

and they STILL cant average 10k a night.

Who the hell cares? They win and that's what I root for; not their attendance. Look at the crap you root for.

they have nobody to root for them to win, ass. This thread has to do with fans, not teams. The rangers have more cups than the devils neways.

Oh Theo...

We're 1 for 67.

Hey, how ironic!

Last time the Leafs won was in 67' ;)

And that was after the last time the Hawks won the cup.

You know what, Eazy...You are 100% right about that actually. Perfect examples of fans that show when they are winning and don't when losing

These are the fans that make me almost be embarrassed to be a Sabres fan. The fair weather fans greatly out number the real fans, the fans that lived and died through all the losing seasons.

Edit: for my internet sucking
