All Torhs Team 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 My steel broke 3 times this season, the other night was most recent. Im getting pretty pissed about it. I try different types of steel, last time I had LS2's on there. They always break right in the middle and half the steel just falls off. This has never happened to any of my teammates. Is it cause I might skate funny? Whats the deal?
acollette49 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 ive been playing for 16 years and have never had steel break. ive skated bauer, ccm, and now graf in that time so ive had a variety. ive only had 1 holder break and that was from a shot block. so, yes, maybe you skate funny. trevor13478 1 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 10 years, no steel or even holders broken, i don't block many shots though...
Viking 1 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 To continue the list, I've broken a few holders, but never steel. Someone has been breaking into your house, and messing with your skates while you sleep.
Cobra2717 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 I only broke one pair, bout 3 months ago. Lightspeeds on my XX's, which i had since their release.
pat19 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 it happened to me twice year when i had vapor XX's, it's happened to a couple teammates too.
DamnLocust 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 Check your holders, they may be on there crooked. I've got a friend whose holders were warped, and he brought it back to the shop to change the steel. The shop didn't even realize (or chose to ignore) the warped holder, and installed the steel in there and it brok the steel on the first skate again. His was so bad that I could see it right away.Next time you have new steel put on, get a straightedge and make sure the steel isnt bending/warping in either direction. Check it again after every skate to make sure that this isn't your problem. The shop may have a more efficient method of checking the holder itself.
ktang 34 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 I have broken a couple of Tuuk Custom+ runners, and I'm not that heavy. But, I do have a choppy skating style and try to block shots.
shifter 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 maybe you skate really agressively and like pound the ice with the skates =/ or maybe you just like to break steels lol
Sghockey21 1 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 Maybe it has something to do with the sharpening. Think the steel might get weakened if sharpened wrongly.
All Torhs Team 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 I have been known to have a funny stride, but Ive tried to improve it. That could be it. But I dont know if it wouldve been sharpened bad. I usually looked around the shop when it was being done. I know, bad habit.
DamnLocust 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 Your "funny stride" could even be caused by warped steel. Warped steel will bite the ice oddly and pull on your feet here and there. If you've never experienced a properly aligned holder, you may not know the difference. As far as a bad sharpening, I doubt it's the cause (but I've been wrong before). Even if the sharpener overheated the blades, I don't see breakage occurring as a direct result of that. Overheated blades usually are localized to the hollow/edges, and don't affect the majority of the steel. Do the blades just snap on their own while you're skating normally? do you block a lot of shots/passes with your skates?
All Torhs Team 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 I catch passes on it quite often. Not a whole lot of hard shots. But it always breaks in the very middle. Just snaps
hockeyplyr814 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 I usually break 3-4 a season, but I probably block 5-10 shots a game, at least half of them with my feet. My most recent break was extremely frustrating, because the rink I was playing at had no pro shop what-so-ever, and the closest place to get them fixed was 45 minutes away! DEATHTRON 19 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 Lets see...a pair of the easton LPS steel, a pair of the graf too....I use my skates alot to gather the puck, and sometimes I play defense. Ive played for 15 years now, and it just happens. Zach
greatone 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 NBH One 90's 3 times. I was told whom ever sharpened my skates possibly overheated the steel which caused them to break.
chippa13 1844 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 One piece of steel in some 30 years.
jimmy 194 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 Some manufacturers make great steel that rarely breaks, others make crap steel that breaks easy. And it is true a bad sharpener can weaken steel.Best steel IMO is the Mission Pitch, never have seen one break either.
Doctor Hook 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 Never busted steel, but my ProLite holders broke like the wind. One of my steels is crooked as well, but I manage.
althoma1 575 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 I haven't had steel break either, but I did have a Prolite holder break on me years ago. I also had the previous (early 90s) CCM holders crack on me as well. Other than those two instances I haven't really had holder or steel problems.
x107metallica 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 ive had it happen to me twice..once with the old eastons with the big green holder and one with my tuuk on my nikes.
CookieJar 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 Broke the steel on my Pure Fly's last July demonstrating turning on inside edges with a hop. Ouch. Oops. (hint hint - considering a diet?) I don't remember what the holders were - whatever Mission was using prior to the new Pitch holder.
#28 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2007 Last season I broke a blade on my Graf 709s. I ended up buying a pair of G5s because my lhs said steel was on back order at graf canada. After a month of skating on the G5s, the perforated steel broke. Then when I went back to the lhs he said he still couldn't get graf steel. Now I had two pairs of skates without steel. I was almost ready to swap Pitch 3 holders onto both pairs so I wouldn't have to deal with finding someone who sold graf blades. I eventually was able to find steel that fit my skates on ebay. Now I carry both pairs of skates in my bag so I can change them if I have a problem, and I won't miss half my game.
barrett 0 Report post Posted March 29, 2007 On my 80-90's this year i broke both of the blades. They must have been faulty, but with my new LS2's I have had no problems.
skatedoctor 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2007 Could be just the bad batch of steel still kicking about.Correct me if im wrong but i think the likes of graf and the l/s steel were laser cut, starting at the middle of the steel, hence overheating the centre point which most steel breakages ive seen are in the middle. Now i think they cut the steel at the ends, as new steel seems to have a little bit of steel where its been cut on the top edge what sits in the holder. But there again its good of Nike/Bauer, Graf, CCM/RBK to make steel 'not as good' as it used to be. That equals more sales and revenue for them, not too much good PR and reviews, but a good money earner as people need steel to skate on.!
