slapshotsteve73 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2007 I was looking at Warrior's shafts (Dolo & AK27) and noticed that the prices were almost exactly the same even though one is tapered and the other standard. This made me wonder if there's that big a difference between Tapered and Standard. Which is better? or is it just preference? Thanks in advance(I looked around and couldn't find anything on this specifically)
Chadd 916 Report post Posted March 31, 2007 Some people are willing to spend as much for standard shafts as others are for tapered shafts.Tapered shafts absolutely have performance benefits over standard models. What you will find is that most people who buy standard shafts do not want to change or have problems finding tapered blades in their area.

Doctor Hook 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2007 Tapered has a lower kickpoint, equaling more velocity on your shots.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted March 31, 2007 ChaddWhat kind of benefits are there with the tapered shaft?quicker release and more zip on wrist shots, assuming you have the proper flex.Tapered has a lower kickpoint, equaling more velocity on your shots. Not always true. sc37 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2007 I honestly can't tell much difference...with the tapered I feel I got a tad bit better release than compared to a standard. But that was from using cheaper standard shafts. I bet if I got a higher end standard shaft, it would be pretty much the same. But that said, I don't have a monster shot either...when I get my next stick, I'm thinking about going to a nicer standard shaft rather than a tapered or OPS. Not benefitting me much, and standard blades are much easier to get a hold of, not to mention a bit cheaper.
Remman 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2007 I have been using a dolomite and most recently a sickick... I find the wristers to have more zing in them than with past standard shafts... Not a huge difference but some...
fastmiele 59 Report post Posted April 1, 2007 in my person experience, I found tapered stuff provides a better kick point if you bend your knees and get your hand down lower on the shaft. I play defence and don't often get into an offensive posture. I usually like skating in a more upright position so when I shoot/pass I don't notice as much of a snap. I could be wrong, but's that's just my observation. My friend also says it depends on your shooting technique.
Jarick 5 Report post Posted April 1, 2007 I like the heavier Easton ST blade more than my OPS for catching passes. It still has the explosive feel of a composite blade but it's got a little more mass to knock down the puck. Just one thing to keep in mind as I don't know that there are heavier composite tapered blades out there.
TBLfan 25 Report post Posted April 2, 2007 interesting, i can't stand the weight on the ST blade. I'm all about stick balance over lightweightness but recently I've been using lighter sticks and it seems to feel more like it's easier to control what I do with the puck. It's more like I'm using an extension to my arms instead of using a stick. I think that's really the benefit to a lightweight stick with good balance. Viking 1 Report post Posted April 2, 2007 Since 90% of my stick experience is with wood, correct me if I'm wrong... I've been thinking about blade-heavy sticks, which seems to be a major complaint of MSH people. Wouldn't this problem be corrected by just using a heavier shaft? I know sticks heavier than a gob of spit are bad news, but if balance is more important than weight, why aren't there more heavy-ish shafts, and OPS-es being made - perhaps special shafts for use with wood blades, or heavier composites like the ST? It would weigh more, but the attraction would be the improved balance... Maybe they make this already, and it slipped under my radar (aka, I don't care). TBLfan 25 Report post Posted April 2, 2007 yes a heavier shaft would correct the problem, but it's easier to find a blade to match a shaft than a shaft to match a blade. Also adding an end plug if you need one might help. I have a tps redlite with a v40 blade that feels great because of the end plug.
kuhner39 0 Report post Posted April 23, 2007 If Joe Sakic uses a tapered shaft... i think it speaks for itself.
Cavs019 710 Report post Posted April 23, 2007 A Stealth isn't a shaft. Joe Sakic had a rifle with a Canadien woody when he came into the league. I think the fact that he's one of the best shooters of all time speaks for itself, not what stick he uses.
kuhner39 0 Report post Posted April 23, 2007 I agree that he has a natural talent.. But I have two of his sticks sitting in my room. They are two t-flexes and he used a wooden blade. (t-flex is a tapered shaft) but thanks for coming out.

Chadd 916 Report post Posted April 23, 2007 and pros have their equipment modified the way they like it. He uses a tapered stealth. I have contactsEvery stealth is tapered, most people don't need contacts to recognize this. When Joe broke into the league he used wood sticks and had a great shot. He moved on to T-flexes and had a great shot. Then Synergys and had a great shot. Now he uses stealths and has a great shot. The only constant is the guy using them.
