Bertuzzi with a visor?

Recommended Posts

...Did he wear a visor in Florida is is it just since he's in Detroit?

Did he have a facial injury/scare somewhere along the way?

He got a concussion a few weeks ago when he ran into Chris Osgood. When he came back for the playoffs, he started wearing it because it cuts down on the glare of the lights (it is lightly tinted).

His wife got nervous. It's always about the wives...see Pronger story.

I think he's required to wear one in the Olympics. I remember reading on here a topic, that said guys under a certain age have to wear one.

IIHF rules have different age restrictions to the NHL on what birth year is the minimum you have to fill in order to have the choice of no visor etc. I can't for the life of me remember the figures exactly but; despite playing in an IIHF sanctioned league.

I wasn't referring to the Olympics though, I was referring to his current NHL visor wearing. Story I heard was similar to what somebody else wrote here, that he was injured. But the further story I got is that his wife really stuck it to him and said something like, "Here are your kids. Don't you want to be able to see them grow up!?" Next day, he's got a visor. Power of the P guys, Power of the P.

Cuts down on glare since he bopped his head pretty good. In general I wouldn't be surprised to see full face protection like the Itech concept II making it's way into the NHL in the next few years.

Considering that full-face is prohibited now and the NHLPA doesn't want visors to be mandatory, it's very unlikely.

How is full-face prohibited? I've seen a few guys wearing cages after injury.

If it's so that people can see the players' faces on TV, I'd be kinda pissed

That's the only time is is allowed. When it is to protect an injury.

because it's actually dangerous to use full face protection for the guys not wearing it. It's either all or none, it's not a beer league.

This is a highly illogical statement, especially considering the same was said of requiring helmets. It may take awhile, like everything else in hockey, but sooner or later common sense will be embraced. It's just a shame that this sort of idiotic peer pressure exists in the NHL and hockey at large. Whether the player's association likes or not, visors will become mandatory. It's really remarkable how many NHL players mange to get used to them after taking a puck, stick, or the boards to an eye. Common sense would dictate wearing the visor before it happens, but see idiotic peer pressure. Lot's of people were pissed in '79 when the NHL mandated helmets for players entering the league, it was pathetically overdue. Everyone got used to it and now it's not even a question. Lot's of people will whine when visors are required. Fact is the CHL and even minor pro leagues like the AHL are requiring players to wear visors. The NCAA requires full cages. The next step is going to be the introduction of full face protection in the NHL. Players got used to wearing helmets, players got used to wearing visors, and players will get used to full facial protection.

Not really - what is something that the NHL has that none of those leagues don't?

Oh yeah - a Players Association.

What they are banking on is that those kids are growing up wearing some sort of facial protection, that they will stick with it when they get to the NHL.

I believe visors will become mandatory for all new players at some point in the not-too-distant future. Full cages or combos will not become mandatory for at least 20 years, if ever.

I don't see full facial protection ever becoming mandatory, simply for the fact that Hockey Players are already unknown in the public, it will be even worse if everyone's face is covered by a cage or combo. If the NHL wants to grow, it needs to get the face(s) of the league out and make them known. that will never happen with full facial protection.

I agree that visors will soon be mandated/grandfathered in.

I don't see full face protection in the NHL happening any time soon, but not because the cages cover the players' faces. Maybe it's just my bad eyesight, but you really can't see the players' faces while the game is going on, and with the action happening, that's about the last thing you'd be watching anyway. Also, every player in the NFL wears a facemask, and I don't think it's hurt them at all.

In the NHL, three 20 minutes periods with a full-face on is not a very pleasant thing. You can't breath that good, can't whipe sweat, can't talk face to face with your coach (example). I don't think players will ever adopt it. Once you've tasted a visor/free face, you just can't go back to a full face. The feeling you have when the air goes through your neck while skating is just too enjoyable.

I'm with Bouce, I think a lot of incoming players will simply keep their visors on. Anyone growing up now plays with full face, most junior leagues require at least a halfie, NCAA is full face, now even the minors require visors... they won't ever get used to playing without one. The opportunity to play without facial protection, and the accompanying peer pressure to do so, will diminish.

I thought there was a union representing the AHL/ECHL players...

Or is this not the same as the NHL's PA?
