waxing stick blades

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I've never waxed my stick blades before. From the sound of it, it seems like a good idea. What wax do you prefer? I notice that there are some waxes that come in a traditional can and others that come in a deodorant looking container. Is there a difference? Also, how do you apply the wax? I'm not very talented with heating things (I always make a mess when I change blades in my shaft), so I was hoping for some tips.

Thanks, qmechanic

P.S. I searched the forums for "wax" and nothing came up!

I still have some Stick Wax with the pre-made groove, which I use to first wax the top and bottom edges of the blade. Then I run the wax lengthwise down the blade on both the forehand and backhand, then I go up and down the tape with the wax. I'll heat the wax until it melts, wait a few hours, then wax it up again.

when i used to wax my sticks, id always use the disk wax that looked like it was in a chew tin, pop it out, and then just cover the blade with wax, make sure you dont let it melt from the heat outside or else it will get too soft and come off in clumps instead of coming off in a thin almost film like coating, with wax a little goes a long way in my opinion. i also found that the "deoderant" style wax alway seemed to be too soft so come off smooth, and would also have the clumping effect just like a wax that got too warm. all pp just like anything tho

i prefer Mr. Zogs Sex Wax, as for the proper technique just gently rub the wax back and forth on the tape, then (if you prefer) take a hair dryer and melt the wax into the tape, this will last longer than the wax itself

have you guys ever tried waxing the tape on the handle? I might try to do that, maybe it'll prevent a bit the wearing down of the palms on my Vapor XXXs

after applying the wax, take a hair dryer and it melts the wax which the goes further into the tape making it last longer than just applying the wax

Tried that before, leaves you with a gross residue on the palms of your gloves..I didn't like it much, haha.

I've given up waxing my blades though...I end up re-tapeing before every game and realized that the wax didn't make much of a difference for me, ao I stopped using it. When i did it though, I used the stuff in the deodorant-like container and found that it DID clump quite a bit. Mr. Zog's is the good stuff if you're gonna be waxing, I'd look for that stuff.

I've never seen Blade Butta before. I've done some research though and found that it comes in the same deodorant-like container as the other stuff I used to use. Does it clump the same way?

This is the same Blade Butter, right?

blade butter is kinda soft, but if you store it in a cool place, it will go on eazy and leave no thick lumps of wax on the blade..

I allways store my Blade Butter wax in the fridge..

I normally make it through around two games, at best with cloth by itself I make it through 2 periods. If I put a layer of tape along the bottom of the blade it can make 4, sometimes 5 games!

I need to get someone who loaded up on Zog's to drop one in an envelope for me! Hate how you gotta buy at least a dozen plus to order it from their site.

My team mate has put sock tape around the top of his stick and that works nicely. Doesn't wear the gloves down as its smooth.

I've got 5 discs of Mr Zogs. I got them from EWH for $1.50 each. I think I can part with one... Or you might want to see if they'll ship you just one and cut you a break on shipping.

What's funny was I bought a xn10 from them so I could get free shipping on 10 rolls of tape and 5 discs of sex wax and a tape/soap bag! :D

I use the easton topshelf stick wax and its pretty good stuff. very soft though and it comes in the deodaront type can so you sometimes get a clump come of on the blade that just smuges when you try to get it off.

I just checked Google and you can get Mr. Zog's Sex Wax from both East West Hockey and the InlineWarehouse. I just ordered one disc from East West Hockey. The cost was $1.50 + $1.99 shipping, which seems pretty good to me.

Thanks for all your help, guys!

If you like it you'll definitely want to order it in bulk because that shipping is a killer. I also recommend trying out some andover tape that EWH sells. It's the only tape I'll use, renfrew is crap.

Renfrew is notcrap. You are buying the wrong renfrew. The blue model tape is made for the NHL, whose players like to retape every game or between periods. So, not much glue is used so the old tape comes off easier. For the retail market Renfrew makes a gold line of tape that is very good and is on par with other good tapes.
