Correct Lie

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, my brother and i were looking and my sticks today and he noticed that the tape ware was at the heel. He then told me to hold my stick if i were playing and said that i have the wrong lie. He then told me that i really should find a new curve. The curves i use now are easton drury and warrior kovalev. My questions to you guys are do i need a lower or higher lie and what are good alternatives to the curves i currently use. thanks in advance.

If there's obvious wear at the heel you'll need a lower lie.

Make sure to remember when buying a stick in store that you won't have your skates on and your knees won't be bent as when skating.

As for curve, that's a matter of personal preference and not one that someone can tell you what curve you should use.

Well what i ment for alternatives was that are there similar curves to drury and kovalev at different lies. And also i dont believe warrior did the different lie selection for kovalev because i just looked at their site and the only curves that have different lie selections are Draper and Federov

Something like the TPS P31 curve I use might work for you. It's an open heel curve with a lower lie. Going for some custom wood blades is another option.

cut your stick? not to sure how short, but cutting it would solve the problem

That only works if you change your hand position. If you keep the same hand position your stick ends up at your collarbone before the blade sits flat.

cutting my stick wont work for me becuase i like the length its at now and it would be a lot to cut off for it to sit right, Chadd i dont want to sound like a moron but for the p31 is it just called that or does it have another name becuase i was on the tps site looking at their curves and they use pro names

The P31 is really hard to get, it's a generic pro pattern. You can find them online sometimes. Custom blades is probably the way to go.

i'd love to find a lower lie version of the Drury/Kovalev. I probably should look into customs at some point.

Christian, TPS, Sherwood.

are they all wood, standard shaft? Any tapered composites?

If you're willing to pay enough and know the right people yes. I thought about going that route but I found a pattern that works well for me without the added expense of a completely customized curve.

Just wondering, how long is your stick in relation to your height? It seems that almost all of the people who investigate lie end up needing/wanting a lower lie, maybe to the point of like a sub 4 lie just because they want to use the longest possible stick.

5 Lie, stick slightly below my lower lip, with shoes on.

Actually, I was wondering more about the original poster.

I actually went from a 5 lie that went to my nose off skates to a 5.5 lie that goes to my eyes off skates. Higher lie and longer stick. But I started bringing my top hand up high when stickhandling for more freedom. That's what I get for watching Gaborik play so much.

Then again I could probably play with anywhere from a 4.5 to a 6 lie and not be too far off because I'll just raise or lower my top hand. Stick length matters more to me than lie...so that's my PP.

i agree. before i did anything curve-wise, i'd hold your top hand higher. i find i get a more powerful snap shot and can stickhandle better in close to my body when i hold my top hand higher.

"If the lie is too high (wear at the heel), adding an end plug would make it worse. He would need to cut the stick down."

True. I have seen pro's sticks with high lies because they cut the sticks very short so they can stick handle very close to their bodies. I have a Belanger One90 that must be a 7 lie. It's cut short for me and I'm pretty sure Belanger is taller than 5'10".

One way I was shown to measure for correct stick lie is to stand on your toes while in street shoes, place your top hand on the hip socket joint and then put a stick in that hand. Lie should be flat.

here's a stupid question....

what is the preferred way to find your right stick length? Clearly I don't want to go hacking up my dolomite and making it too short. Is there a recommended procedure to walk it in?

It's all preference. A shorter stick makes it much easier to stickhandle while a longer one gives a bit more jump on shots.
