Large calves, which shin guard works?

Recommended Posts

Like it says, I have lean legs, with rather large calves. Without being able to try these on, are some shin guards better than others for larger calves? Mainly concerned with just getting my shin up into the shin guard, such as the Easton S9 is refered to as a "slim" shin guard, would I have a hard time just getting my shin up to the back of the shin guard without a gap or maybe being too tight on the sides? There are only a couple of options at my LHS and none of the ones I'm interested in. I'm looking at RBK 8K, Easton S9, or the NB One90. Thanks!

I have no idea, but I think you kinda stole my username ;) :D

That's OK though.

Get some closeout Itech 660 or 990s, I have very large calfves and the 660s work for me. If you want current models, check the new Missions and Itechs.

Sorry Hockey Player, didn't know you were out there...haha

I have rather large calves and I use one90s, but they barely fit.

Well crap, that's disappointing. Do all the manufacturers think everybody has toothpick calves?

you could try getting a pair with removable straps or cut the straps off the ones you buy and just hold them up with tape. Thats my best suggestion to you sorry man i don't have large caves just a large head.

I have a classmate that had an operation to ENLARGE his calves.

Doesn't help you much, but I found it ironic.

That's a red flag.

What's your measurement around your calf at the biggest point?

Mine around roughly 18.5" around. I'd imagine that these could fit a 19" around.

*Note - my shin guards are 16"

Well, mine are about 17" at biggest point(now your calves are monsters!). The reason I'm asking is when I was at the LHS and tried on a pair of cheaper shin guards, don't remember the brand, they where a little "tight" in the front of my shin.

By looking at pictures, the synergy 800 & 700 seem to have quite big calf protectors. I haven't tried on any easton shins myself but they do look big. Jofa's/rbk's higher end models does also have big protectors for the calves.

My Jofa 6070's are great for players with big calves, but they dont have any calf protection what so ever :D ..

Edit: Just saw that hockeymonkey had the old Synergy 900's, they might work for you.

I have noticed, thru pictures, that covering the whole calf may not happen.

Actually, I'm more concerned with actually fitting into the shin guards. People say that the Easton S9 is a "slim" shin guard. Does that mean that I would have a hard time just getting the front of my shin to butt up against the shin guard, leaving a small gap at the front of my shins or being too tight on the sides?

most shin guards should be able to accomodate large calves. I've got pretty large ones, mainly from all the years of playing soccer (used to take free kicks at school level, trained by shooting from the half way line).

I've got a pair of mission subzeros, and they are pretty bulky. after a while you get used to them, and I wouldnt trade them for anything else now. Real light, and extremely protective.

wow you guys have some huge calves.

anyhoo i recommend the ccm vector shin pads. my legs are 15.5" around at the largest point, and even when i tighten them as far as possible, they're still loose on me.

and hockeyplayer, don't make fun of our tobacco state. Philip Morris USA keeps food on my table. nice to see another msh'er from nc though. btw what LHS do you go to? it might be a place i'd like to check out.

I agree. My Vector straps and folds wrap around my calf and seem to be too big even though I have normal sized legs. They might be great for you, although they are a bit wide for my liking. They were cheap enough too that trying them wouldn't kill you.

17.5" around for me, but I have a short and stocky lower body (5'10"). I wear 14" shin guards from Mission, the Fuel 110's and they seem to fit me just fine. They are a bit of a wider guard too, and my shins do press all the way into the padding and guard.

ramen sandwiches hardly qualifies as food ;)

i got big calves.. although its is becuase i am fat.. not because i work out..

i am not about to break out the measureing tape, but i have an older pair of jofa 6090 that have a floating calve protector, that is adustable.. works well enough.. so one of the newer RBK models should work.

plus it only has the one strap that works just below the knee.. which is awesome.. i never need shinguard tape. It also leaves lots of room for my calves..

Shins on in or outside the tounge? if outside, u must have really short shins

im 5,11" and use 16" Jofas.

I do have shorter shins, but long quads. The base of my shin guards are about 1/2" to 1" above the top of my ankle cuff on the skates.

I have abnormal calves and I wear Jofa/RBK shinpads. 9090,9060, 8k or 7k's work great. Also they have an awesome calf slash guard.

Large-ish calves here but--like golfpuck--I don't feel like whipping out the tape measure (plus I'm at work). I have the RBK 4K shins and took off the velcro straps before I even used them the first time. Wide enough and protective.

Throwing down on the NC part: my grandparents were tobacco farmers and my dad helped them while he was growing up. Plus, my parents live in a subdivision developed over that same field. I <heart> eastern NC.

Thanks for all the replies!

Anyone on the One90's or Easton S9? Again, I'm not so concerned with the calf guard, but if the shin guard is too "narrow" to fit into.

I am actually having the same problem you are. I ordered a pair of one90's and there is no way the bottom strap is going to attach around my calves. There is no problem with the anchor strap but there is about a 1" gap on the lower one. In regards to them being to narrow, I am having no problem with that; in fact they fit exceptionally well and snug. I have good sized calves (16.5") but I think the problem mey stem from the fact that I have short legs and therefore wear a 13" shinpad. I figure I'll try them on using tape and see how that works, and if not I'll be selling them and trying something different. Does anyone know if the straps get longer?larger as you go up in size?

19.5" around the calf, 11" ankles. I use 15" Jofa 5500 tucked into the skate- fits like a glove, though I max the top strap out
