Hockey 'state of mind'

Recommended Posts

I just thought about this in class earlier, and I was wondering how many of you are still in your hockey 'state of mind' even off the ice. Don't know what that means? For example:

You're walking in an area full of crowded people, with incoming and oncoming people in both directions. Sometimes when I step aside or avoid the people coming towards me, I'll think as if I'm avoiding a check or deking someone. Now I know I'm obviously not doing that, but sometimes I like to think that it will somewhat help my awareness when on the ice. Same with paying attention in class. No one likes to do it, but the motivation is the same. I want to keep my head focused in class like I would in a game or in practice. And sometimes I find it helpful. Like in high school, the same evening I would have hockey practice, and since I paid attention in class that one day, I feel my practice has shifted over to hockey and I am more aware and paying attention to the drills and the plays the coach is talking about. I know it's weird, but have any of you thought of a situation like that?

Yes, my roommate and I were talking about this one day. When walking around the skyways downtown here, I'll see groups of people, start seeing openings, if someone comes close to me I starting thinking about dropping a shoulder, etc.

Actually anytime I'm walking place to place, I'm generally thinking about plays, dekes, etc to try next time I hit the ice. I like to think that's part of why I've been improving so much since I started playing last year.

I like the potential of this thread to be hilarious.

When I play basketball, I usually end up doing plays I do on ice, like going wide and underneath the net. Then dishing it out front.

When I played basketball I always drove the lane and then dished it off when the defense collapsed. That said, knowing how to establish position down low helps with the new standards and playing in front of the net.

Yes, I do this. It has saved me a couple of times at work as well. Got to keep your head up!

I geek-out and wear my new gear around the house too, in case you were wondering ...

Weird!?

I was just thinking about that yesterday as I "deked" a few people coming out of the subway (as I normally have to do during rush hour)...could just be that I really miss playing. Can't wait till November to get the green light from the doctor.

Not all the time. I just slide past huge crowds but that's it. I don't pretend I'm skating or deking lol

Though funnily enough, I was walking down a street and this guy that was in his rugby kit almost bumped into me. What he did was pretend he had a rugby ball in his hands and sidestepped like a crab out the way. Friggin' hilarious!

It's always good to be aware of your surroundings and what's going on around you. On the ice, I try to be mindful of everyone in front of, to the sides, and behind. Helps when walking around a city street late at night, too.

I get this too. I think of this sometimes when I wake up getting for school. Focusing and, learning in school is like practising on the ice for me.
