What kinda visors you guys use?

Recommended Posts

I will second the 4500 with the oakley pro straight as being a sweet combo. Although now that I know the Small straight will fit my lid i just may go to that.

As to the fogging issue, I used to use hotel shampoo when I played jrs. It was all we could affford was to snatch some off of the custodial carts in the hotels. just make sure the shampoo is a clear type (no conditioners) just put a streak across it and then buff it off with a clean rag. NOTE - the last visor i did this to ended up crytalizing, but im not sure if it was from the 'poo or just poor maintenance otherwise.

I use shampoo as well. The girlfriends Herbal Essence. Cleans the halfy good, dries clear, and smells good. I also use Rain - X on the outside every once in a while. Easy to wipe off water bottle splatter and ice. Anyone else?

Thanks for all the help guys.

I ended up ordering the Itech Wave Mirror and I can't wait to wear it, was terrified in the game last night playing without anything on (doesn't help that I did take a stick to the face).

Hopefully I can play with it soon I did something to my groin last night and now i'm on crutches.

I thought Rain X only worked on glass...It works on Plastic?

Rocked an Itech RBE visor for one beer league game then immediately went back to cage. Too damn risky. However, for beer league, I'd say this visor is adequate.

I think I'd wear a cage (or visor/cage combo) if I played League...but for strictly pick up/drop in...a visor is good enough for me.

Been thinking about going to a visor... Took a stick under the chin that ripped my helmet off on Tuesday. Would have busted teeth or broken my nose if I had a visor.

Why do the little girls always play so rough around the big guys?

Still need to find a large coverage, cheap/used one for reffing.

I just ordered a Oakley pro aviator in clear. Coming from a very early/cheap Itech i'm really curious how it will be to play without a visor that's constantly fogging up :)

i made my on visor by cutting the lower half off an Itech Concept II shield, it's really quite nice until i can afford a real visor.

That's smart. I didn't have a problem with my cage and waited to buy my Oakley Aviator.

Forgot my helmet and Oakley visor combo tonite, so went to the rink's equip room and the only one that fit was a bucket with a full cage.

Thing was totally misadjusted but I enjoyed playing with it. Only one other player in the game had a cage tonite.

Negatives - it felt really heavy. Vision was better than I thought it would be.

Postive - I didn't feel as isolated from the game as I could hear better, and of course better ventilation. Vision although obstructed wasn't distorted. I wear contacts so I already have a layer of distortion on my eyeballs.

It's got me thinking a half wire. Not many players use them though.

Are the half wires good??

I always thought the whole point of visor was vision with protection for the eyes, sans the bars. But a wire half shield goes against that. Just my toonie.

Half wire you wouldn't have to worry about scratches or fog though. Scratches and fog don't give you good vision.

I did some casual tests a while back. The Oakley I have is good, but there is still distortion. The distortion is through 100% of your field of vision and worse on the periphery. The cheaper visor I have has really bad distortion.

Today I looked through the wires. There is of course 0% distortion. Because you have two eyes, I see no outright blocking of on-ice information. Rather the bars create some "interference" in the brightness/contrast when the subject matter is behind a bar. A puck for instance will never get lost by your eyes. I figure the brain can learn to tune this out as well.

My first time ever with a cage was last nite. During the game I picked out of mid air (~4 feet) a hard shoot-in attempt with the blade of my stick. Smacked it dead center and then made a quick outlet pass to turn the play the other way. That blew me away. Since switching to D I've had vision issues like following the puck along the glass, and even blocking or taking passes at the point. So I am hoping the wire will improve this.

I ordered up the ITech half wire today, got a new helmet too. Should have it in a few days. The LSH said they thought they would be selling more than they have of them.

Couple more things I noticed with about visors: they shift all of the visual information upward. For me this seems to affect my hand/eye timing, like on a one-timer for example. I get all revved up and take them off the heel of the stick (@$&!$ game situation, visor on) but practicing (no visor) hit them dead center.

So practicing, you gotta wear it.

Here's some more theory..I don't see many D men wearing visors v.s forwards. My guess is the visual shift is more of a problem for D as they have to scope the full ice surface, and process information from a greater distance. Forwards play in tighter circles so it is less of an issue. If a goalie had to wear a visor, he'd be hooped.

And for a situation like Mats Sundin, who got injured then came back with a visor tried to play but later removed it. He'd have trouble overcoming the visual shift because you have to re-program your game, which would take 1000's of hours of play. Too frustrating.

how big is the Itech pro wave compared to the oakley pro straight and the pro straight small height wise and distance from your face?

Doesn't distance from your face depend on model of the helmet?
