Which glove, and why?

Recommended Posts

I am leaning towards picking up a new pair of gloves for this season. I still have and love my X-70'S for their fit and mobility. They were bought on sale, however, when the only pair left in the colours I wanted were that Pro-Glow stuff - that shiney finish. I will probably hold onto them and use them for free-hockey and practice, but I'd like to get a new pair that are a little tamer looking for games.

The two I am hung up on are the Mission M1-Pro's and the Bauer 4-Rolls. The price is pretty much the same, as the M1's are on special for $100 vs. $120 for the 4R. What I look for in a glove, apart from the obvious protection, is wrist mobility with a reasonably light weight. I like the loose fit of the X-70, as well as the mobility of the shorter cuff, although it is becoming something of a concern in my league games now, as a recent rash of slashing and stick-work has erupted. I do not like Robo-cop looking gloves, a la new Vectors, One-90's, et al. Out of these two, which do you prefer and why?

Thanks.

I love the basic look of the NBH 4 rolls, and from what I hear people love how they feel on the gloves. I dont know too much about the missions, but seems like the general consesis is that people like the 4 rolls.

B-Nads,

I have almost identical prefereces for gloves as you. Prior to getting the 4-Rolls, I had X-80s and couldn't have been happier. I purchased the Bauers because the Eagles were starting to show their age, and also have been pleasantly surprised. Even with 15" 4-Rolls, I don't find I have mobility issues, as the glove is quite loose in the cuff area.

There is also a noticible difference in how much cooler the 4-Rolls are on ice. Granted, the X80s were leather, but the vents on the back of the 4-Rolls do seem to allow your hands to breath better.I also found that the 4-Roll split fingers were a nice improvement over the pre-formed fingers on the Eagle.

The only minor issue that I have found with the 4-Rolls is that the palm of my top glove hand is already starting to show signs of wear, despite the fact that (1) I use white tape on the ends of stick (2) I've only used the gloves for 4 or 5 ice times.

To this day I still go back to my nylon M1 Pro.

I hear you there - the only ones available here are leather - I wouldn't even hesitate if they had nylon ones.

I have had both, and I would pick the 4-rolls everytime (especially for only $20 more). Not to say the M-1 is not a quality glove, but the 4-rolls are superior in multiple areas:

1. Mobility (fingers/cuff)

2. Nylon

3. Ventilation

4. Palm

Ive got a pair of 15" 4 rolls and i love them. The cuff mobility is great and the glove breaks in like a dream. The nylon also dries very quickly (compared to leather). The only beef I have with them is that the nylon lining the top of the fingers is peeling away (happened within 3 skates) but I chalk that up to being a manuf. defect, and shouldnt be true of all of the 4 rolls.

Gotta question you on ventilation.

The 4-Rolls don't even have vent holes - how can it be a better vented glove?

FYI - Mission owns the vent hole patent on hockey gloves.

I gotta agree with JR.

I had the old mission 3 finger gloves that I absolutely loved. Took me a year and a half to switch out of them even though they were so beat up. THe reason I loved them so much is that they were nice and broken in, great mobility and the ventilation. To this day they still remain in my hockey bag as a backup.

I'd rather have a pair of TPS gloves over the 4-roll or any mission glove. Personally, I've refallen in love with the new Supreme line but TPS gloves are a close second.

JR, he's talking about the 4 holes above the back of the hand.

To me they both ventilate about the same.

I have to second Chadd's short finger issue....I had to go with 15" in the m-1s due to the finger issue.

The M1 ia a nice glove. Very protective and mobile. I have a pair with goatskin palms that I've alternated with my TPS HGT's.

It would appear that an outside option has won the debate - TPS R8. I treid them on after reading some reviews and they fit perfectly, and are almost as nice looking as the 4-rolls. My favorite feeling glove I tried on is the 9k, but I doubt I will be dropping 2 bills on a pair of mitts anytime soon.

You may want to check out the sell section...someone is selling new 15" 9kn gloves for $65 plus shipping. I'd jump on the deal myself if I didn't already buy those same gloves several months ago in that section (I think I paid around $95 with the shipping so this deal looks even better, but I don't regret the purchase as they are nice gloves and they do sell for $199 Canadian at LHS around here).

I'm all for the M-1's. I'm on my second pair. My first pair I had for about 2 years with about 8 hours playing time each week (minus summer) and never had a hole in them until about 2 weeks before the new pair.
