Blame the Stick

How is it that I can use any stick but a professional cant ?

I'm willing to bet you can't use any stick as well as he uses sticks that he doesn't like.

I can't believe I missed this the past couple days...its the most hypocritical thread in MSH history..

a bunch of people who swear they can tell a 5g difference in a stick or a 0.0002 lie difference between 2 sticks...telling one of the games best players he should adapt because he's a pro, classic!

so all the of the young one's out here busting his balls...say you make it to the NHL with your trusty EasNBHWarKickFuel and then you wind up with a Lamoirello type of guy who tells you what you're going to use if you don't have a contract (i.e back in the day when they all used CCM gloves, etc)...and you go cold..then what.?? where do you draw the line, what about the kids at college, USHL, NAHL, AHL, ECHL who all have to use certain gear...

my own pro story has to do with Sydor and some repainted blades...funny stuff...

With regards to your remarks about the hypocrtical mentality.....I think that you are about 90% correct. We don't know the extent of his contract with RBK, and while the immediate answer would be to get some of his old sticks and repaint them as a RBK, we can't be certain if RBK will allow him to do this. Unlike a fully endorsed pro, we have the ability to purchase a new stick anytime we choose (necessary funds pending).

I know there was an article in one of the Toronto papers about Wellwood and he's in the same dilemma as he was down to his last couple of shafts.

As a pro, when you're making that much money and at that high level where the slightest difference can throw you off, I'd probably be quite pissed off as well. The grip thing, I don't really understand as they can easily put different types of grip on. My 7K retail version is much more tackier than my pro stock version.

He should have stocked up.

Chadd, don't you have a ton of R2 XN10s stocked up? That day will be shitty when the last one goes...

Last pic I saw of Chadd, he had 7-10 of them, but I don't think he's going through them every game or two. Jager uses a OPS, disaster for any pro looking to prolong the life of their stock.

Still confuses me though. He may be looking at his gloves too, with limited gloves he can't use pine-tar or candy-cane as it wears the palms quicker, and I bet his equipment guy is getting tired of those ratty things. But still, RBK can repaint anything to be a Sickick, why not go shopping at the LHS and try out a Maxx Stick'um, an Easton grip, Nipple grip, etc until he's got something he likes?

Which pro was it who was looking for torpedo shafts?

Still have four new ones as well as the two that are taped up. I would hope that one of the manufacturers is able to surpass that level of performance by the time those are all retired.

Obviously Chadd won't go through them as fast. My point was more on the fact that because Chadd loves those sticks so much, it's hard for him to switch and so he stocked up. Probably costs Jagr very little or nothing at all to get those sticks and so he should have had a ton of them made for him. Reminds me of the Sykora clip and how he goes through approx 100-120 sticks per season:

After a season’s worth of trying to find sticks that felt right to him because Bauer discontinued his pattern...

How does a pro have his pattern discontinued? Can't the just go to a company with an old stick and say "...Make me 3 dozen EXACTLY like this"

You would think that would be alright but anyway. 3 dozen would last what 2 months

The article said he used one stick for two games and used 3 more for the next week.

I'd call that typical for a high level player.

Even with all this talk about composites breaking so easily, how long did NHL guys use wood sticks? There are players on this board that said they can't use the same stick for more than 2 games as the blade will go.

while I do find the article somewhat funny being that coincidentally Jagr is not producing well offensively this season, I also find it a bit ironic that numerous replies in this thread imply a "deal with it" mentality, meanwhile there are plenty of "Joe's" on this board who have multiple different types of OPS and the like. I guess being a pro doesn't allow you to be picky about your trade tools?...Of course if said members are pros, then by all means my mistake!

Rarely do we have members come right out and blame a stick for their shortcomings, I'll give them that much credit.

I talked to John Madden a few weeks ago about the life of a OPS for him. He said the first thing he does with each stick is find the kick zone in the flex. He said he has to have it about 4" up from the heel and about 3"-4" from that point. If the kick zone is any higher on the shaft he removes the stick from his supply. He feels the higher kick zone effects his shot. He said about half the sticks he gets he rejects. The life of a OPS for Madden was 2 games. He can feel it die and not perform for him the way it has to. He guessed he uses 160 sticks a season. He also checks for nicks and fractures and will eliminate that stick immediately. Why not? Of course, he said there are other guys who will use anything and not worry about the kick zone at all. It was an interesting conversation.
