A question mainly for goalies........

Recommended Posts

Just a quick question for the goalies out there. If you are playing pickup and the play is in your zone and a forward is screening you ( I must emphazise , going out of his way not to interfere or touch you ie; staying out of the crease ) how do you deal with this ?

I've played recently with one particular goalie who cross checks, whacks you in the nuts from behind , slashes and is generally a dick when you screen him or obstruct his view in any way whatsoever. As its only pick up I thought players might show each other a bit more respect or show some more sportsmanship ( as in most other pickups I've played ) as there are all levels of player out there trying to enjoy an informal pickup game.Hockey is a contact spot , we all know this but I'm just wondering about the goalies point of view on pick up games. In a league game situation it would be fair game , but what do you guys think about this type of play in a pick up game ? I think its the type of play ( in a league game ) that would lead to a penalty, so does it really have a place in a pick up game ?

i agree with DCott. If I were a goalie I feel like I wouldn't minded being screened a little bit more it would give more practice to work on things like that and traffic infront of the net. I have played with some goalies who were really annoying to play with I had one goalie skate up and try and score a goal. I feel like at any pick up open hockey thing you are always going to get a dirty player who hooks though or a goalie who slashes or just an all around show-off so I just deal with it and play my game.

As a goalie i'd say thats wrong, when i'm in that sort of situation i either try and get a view round the side of the player or just give him a nudge with my catcher. Keep the stick out of things as much as possible because especially with no refs it can get dangerous...

If a goalie slashed me in the junk while playing pick up I would turn around and grab him by the front of the jersey and politely explain the error of his ways. If that didn't work, his helmet comes off and things go down hill from there.

We all know goalies can be a little "special" but that's no excuse to be an asshole.

yeah the guy just sounds like an asshole - if you are a good enough shot i would try to ring his bell a few times with a shot to the mask (or right in the family jewels).

he may have played competitive hockey that way and is too dumb to realize it shouldn't carry over to pickup hockey

As both a goalie and a forward, I'll agree with everyone's statements here. Goalies will do that in a game everytime, but during pick up it's not needed unless the forward is being a prick. As long as he's not interefering with me then I'm not going to be a jerk to him, it's when he spends his time cutting across the net and catching my stick everytime there is a shot or he's backing up into me that I'll start getting a little ansy; however, groin shoits are totally uncalled for. Although I did give a forward one with my elbow/forearm during my last beer league game unintentionally. I made a glove save and the ref blew his whistle, then I caught him crashing the net out of my perepherialvision, so I pulled my glove to my chest and prepared for the contact while I was in the butterfly. Caught him on his thigh/groin, which spun him around. I can only assume that I got his groin because he was complaining like a son of a gun after the play,

A game with refs is a little more serious than pickup. Either way unless there is really any value in the game (higher levels such a juniors or a checking league) there's no need for such physicalities on screens.

For the record taking intentional head shots is also out of line, a quick what's your problem should at least be the starting point for dealing with the situation. After there escelation will ensue if he doesn't lighten up, which is unfortunate, but unavoidable.

A push with the catcher... it's pickup. If he starts being an asshole then its a harder push with the catcher. If it gets worse it becomes a hit with the catcher in the lower back, I've never had anyone keep it up after that... It hurts.

Plus of course telling him to back off because it's only pickup never hurts.

Thanks for all the views guys. This a new pickup I've been going to ( maybe 3 or 4 times ) They are a somewhat tight group, most of them play on the same teams. They have never gone out of there way to welcome new players when they show up and are'nt an overly friendly group bar 3 or 4 of the regulars.

Its a good fast paced game ,the lines are usually matched skill wise and its a fun pickup, minus the goalies retarded behavior.Skill wise its everything from very good to average to an odd beginner or two and all guys in their 30's or 40's.As I'm the new guy I've gone out of my way to avoid contact when possible , pass as much as I can and generally try to fit in their game. There are a couple of guys there , good players not outstanding players though , who have a rather overinflated view of themselves and bitch like you would'nt believe.

The goalie is the kind who will every now and then ,make a glove save and drop the puck and stick handle through the forechecking forwards to centre ice and take a weak shot from there. The forwards usually don't know what to make of that , but nobody ever challenges him.He is the kind of guy if he makes a good save and you turn around and say something like ' good glove goalie ',he just stares right through you.

I've asked him politely to lay off the stick work in front of the net and he again just stares right through me.This weekend he sent me flying with a good shove from behind ,I was'nt close to touching him or in the crease by the way .I turned to him and said 'I asked you to lay off that crap so watch it ,people can get hurt that way besides its only pickup'.He tells me to F off and I call him an asshole and tell him to watch himself.I get back to the bench and ask one of his team mates 'whats up with that stickwork in pick up ?'

His buddy replies,' You were screening him, he's just staking out his claim '.I'm sorry but thats a somewhat retarded answer for a over 30's pickup game ? I muttered something like ' yeah ,well maybe I'll start retaliating if he does'nt lay off '( out of frustration ) and he says' you should '

I'll most likely find a different pickup to play ,its just so frustrating to pay $20 and expect a good casual game and see such unsportsmanlike play in a supposed informal afternoon pick up.

Sorry for the rant ,I'm just big on fair play and respect in sports and this guy bugged the crap out of me.

For a goalie to leave his crease and knock you out of the way is just ridiculous. He could very easily let up a goal every time he takes time to "stake his claim" whatever the hell that means.

One of my buddies is a goalie, and every once in a while he'll take the puck the length of the ice, just to joke around. He's actually pretty good at weaving through traffic, and you wouldn't believe how easy it is to protect the puck with those leg pads.

We had one player who showed up at pickup one night, slashed and got rough on defense. The same 20 guys play every week, give or take whoever can't make it and 5 random guys. The only people who throw contact are the ones who are close buddies givin' gruff and having fun. This guy was a dick and got kicked out after 10 minutes.

taps with the stick are fine, but when i say taps i really do mean taps... if you're hacking, you're gonna have to answer... I love being a regular at a pickup, because if someones being a bonehead, you can put him in his place and know you've got guys that have your back...

i mean i'm coming back from a leg injury, and a guy bumped it and hacked my ankle too much. finally i knocked his ass down and told him to ease up as i stood over him. i had the rink manager (who was three feet away) laughing and shaking his head at the guy for finally getting called out by the smallest guy on the ice lol

run 'im over... I used to practice screening my team goalie (who's on this board as well), so that he and I both get to improve. But we never overstepped the boundaries, especially during drop in.

pickup should be for fun, who cares about how many goals you score or save. Its also a time for those inexpereinced ones to get some ice/rink time. I find that playing in pickup all these years has helped me be more aware of where other players. I used to defend at the point, and once I get the puck I would just try and score. Now I try to hold up the play to get everyone involved, making more passes.

Just my .02$ run him (I would), but I bet $20 him or his buddies will be looking for payback. So be ready to drop the gloves and watch your back. Dicks are bigger dicks after they've been knocked on their ass.

My thoughts exactly,I would imagine all his buddies would'nt take too kindly to 'the new guy' running their goalie .If a few of my friends played this pickup I'd be more inclined to give him a bit of his own medicine as I know they'd have my back out there ,but I think I'd pretty much get jumped straight away If I decked this asshole. As I don't really know any of these guys I don't fancy the odds of not being jumped either on the ice or in the parking lot after so I think I'll take the higher ground on this one for now.

It still is pretty pathetic behavior ,so much for sportsmanship eh ? :(

Also as a side note ,just about every time I've screened him ,he's been so busy trying to hack the shit out of me he has let in a goal .Not too smart eh?

If you play with him again (and he does it again), just take the puck wide and cut hard across the front of the net, making sure to plow him over and slide the puck in on the open side. Hop up quick and watch as he is laying there with the puck neatly placed behind him. All in all he's being a dick by playing that way.
