Ohlund Suspension

Recommended Posts

Didnt see a thread on this...

got 4 games for this slash:

was assessed a major penalty on the play and subsequently got 4 games today.

Your take on it? I'm finding it hard to fault Ohlund, he did get elbowed. I mean, who hasnt slashed someone for a dirty hit. Granted, he did crack a bone in Koivu's leg. Mixed emotions for me.

Ohlund is hardly the type to go out and do something like that

Koivu's flying chicken wing attempt obviously tipped him over the edge. I was expecting a 2 game suspension but I guess 4 is reasonable considering he cracked a bone. Then again, 3 elbows to the face courtesy of the Wild, Jacques should've said something.

i think he should have only gotten 2 games, looked to be a solid hack but he is not the type of player who is known to be dirty. IMO they should of dealt with it the real way, drop the gloves, yes it would obsiously not be a fair fight but it would have taught Koivu a lesson.

I'm pretty sure if you break someones leg with a two had golf swing you deserve to at least sit out 4 games. Even if you don't have a dirty history.

if 4 is reasonable for putting someone out a week, why is Jones' suspension so comparatively light?

Because Jones hit was in the play, where Ohlund's was well after with no "hockey playing" impact on it.

Stick fouls are the only thing the NHL really punishes consistently. Otherwise they only go with a long suspension if there is a public outcry.

but who hasnt whacked the crap out of someone to goad them into a fight

Me. I don't two-hand people like that. I'll push them in the chest to get their attention but it is WAY too easy to ruin someone's year by two-handing them. It's irresponsible. I'm all about clocking someone but guys who two-hand deserved to be strung up.

Absolutely. We all know a really clean player who has whigged out and almost killed someone with one dirty play.

As opposed to Andy Sutton drilling a Flyer defenseman from behind with 1.2 second left on the clock and while he was already engaged with another player? There wasn't a suspension of any kind for that play.

well that is easy to explain - colin campbell sucks at his job :P

i don't think there are many people on here who would defend him

i think koivu was just frustrated cuz they were losing pretty badly already.

and that elbow was a pretty cheap shot.

ohlund just reacted like any other player would have, ohlund just happen to hit part of the leg where theres not much padding...

but anyways, 4 games is quite a bit considering jones only got 2...

Agreed. Four games is about the length of the suspension he should have received. Pretty brutal hack. Not really something that should have been an action following the elbow to Ohlund. Neither of them are really fighters, so I guess how they solve issues is by hacking and elbowing each other. Just too bad that Koivu broke his leg as a result.

He is one person i would never except to do something like that. In Ohlunds defense Koviu jumped at him, but Ohlund took it way too far, that was an attempt to injure.

I've never been the type of guy to two hand another player. Although hockey is a gritty sport, respect needs to be shown.

If an opposing player elbowed someone like that from our team, we'd take his number, make sure we really finish our checks on him, be a little rougher on him, and he'll cough the puck up more, as he'll be worried and/or anticipating a hit, more than usual. It's all about taking a negative and making it a positive. It's just something I've learned over the years.

Koivu came up high but its not like he took a long run at him, Ohlund totally disappoints me..anyone who slashes like that is just weak..got a problem..take off the gloves...its that simple...this whole generation of people who use their sticks and/or hits from behind while playing on the perimiter will do more to set the game back than any jersey, logo branding, lack of TV contract, etc..the teams who win the Cup for the most part will continue to mirror the Ducks, Canes etc and not a squad like Vancouver..

4 games for a broken leg...crazy

Remember, a lot of these guys came up in the Euro system where fighting gets you tossed from games in most leagues over there. Different mindset when it comes to dropping the mitts.

Giving a guy a chop is one thing, winding up over your shoulder first is another. Ohlund, not known for this kind of thing, got what he deserved.

In this case, i think they both got what they deserved. I wouldn't slash someone for elbowing me in the face, but i am sure i would respond some way. Im sure Koivu will think a little more next time he tries something dirty like that.

Maybe if the instigator rule wasn't around then he would've dropped the gloves. It's something to consider.
