Good eats

There are only 3 sandwich shops that get my business: Jersey Mikes, Lenny's, and Quizno's.

BTW.....WHAT IN THE HELL were those little "rat things" that were singing and dancing on Quizno's commercials like 2 years ago? I never did figure that out. And what is a business in the FOOD INDUSTRY doing using some kind of a rodent as a spokesperson? Almost as bad as a cat being the mascot for a chinese buffet.

Used to love Jersey Mikes. Big fan of the chicken philly but then one day my friends and I went in and saw an actual whore talking to one of the workers there, who then went on to rub the gauge in his ear and make one of my friend's sandwiches. it wasn't my sandwich so I went back, got a chicken parm and it was cold in the middle. Strike two. I saw a weekly health score flash on the local news and this place had a 40something. Strike three and never went back to one again.

Yeah, I don't know what you have to do to get a score that low but I'd eaten in some places that had good food but looked like they would be shut down on appearance alone. Maybe the whore came back and prepped the salami, I dunno, I'll never know because that store tainted the franchise for me.

A forty? Wow...that's pretty bad when you consider the worst violations only check off 5 points at a time. I would think it would almost be impossible to get a score hat incredibly bad.

college student here, crock pot is great (got my own apartment)

new york strip, water, beef buillon cube, seasoning, little bit of steak sauce, throw it in the crock pot in the morning, come home from classes, yummm... well for that matter you really cant mess anything up in a crock pot lol

or if im in a hurry, i just fix some ramen, alfredo sauce, and some bacon bits.

but hands down... drumroll please... the ORIGINAL RAMEN SANDWICH!!!!

ingredients:

"take and bake" french baguette

2 packs ramen

shredded cheese

preparation:

-cut of 12 inches of baguette, save the rest

-cook the ramen while baking the baguette, then turn off oven

-slice baked baguette down the top, but not all the way through, so it has a V groove in the top

-put a layer of shredded cheese in the groove, followed by ramen, then more cheese on top

-pop back in the oven for a minute or two, there will be enough heat left to melt the chese

** the ramen sandwich is especially delicious when covered in brown gravy and eaten with fork, accompanied by a small side salad.

enjoy, knowing you just consumed 1000 calories!

EDIT: actually more like 2000 calories

Quick and Easy Mac n cheese

Ingredients

Mozzarella cheese, preferably a fresh mozzarella, or even try Buffalo or smoked mozzarella, but I used that brick crap as we can't afford the good fresh stuff.

Cheddar, again a good quality cheddar is preferred, but once again I used the crappy brick generic cheddar as that is what we can afford

Parmesan, same rule applies as the other ones

butter maybe a quarter cup

milk 1 3/4 cups

flour 1/4 cup

medium onion diced

1 garlic glove minced

nutmeg, I used the handle of a spoon so maybe a 1/4 teaspoon

noodles, any shape-type noodle will do.

Salt and pepper

This stuff is what a lot of people have on hand so that is what makes it convenient

preheat oven to 400 f and bring water to a boil, and make sure to salt the water, remember what many Italian grandmothers may have said "the water must taste like the sea" me I am not fortunate to have an awesome Italian grandmother that can cook or and Italian grandmother for that matter <_< , so I learned this from TV. So anywho heat the butter till it is melted, add the onions once melted and then add the garlic a minute later. When the onions are translucent then you can move onto the next step, add the flour to the butter and onions and stir around until the butter is gone. then add the milk and stir. after a few minutes you will discover it will get thicker, so just wait until it bubbles the add salt, pepper and nutmeg. Stir, then add in the cheese. Now you have noticed that I haven't told you how much cheese to add, this is really up to you, you can decide how cheesy you want it. Then wait till the cheese is melted and add the drained noodles that you should have already cooked( again just add as much as you think you will need, I would say around 2 1/2-3 cups). Mix together and pour into a glass dish thing, and sprinkle some Parmesan on top,and throw it into the oven for 10 minutes. I also should have added that you should cook the noodles 2 minutes less than what you normally have it cooked for. That way it can cook in the oven and not become totally overcooked!

So that is my recipe addition... seems more like a story and I read over it.. ehh whatever.

Try it though!! It's awesome, and pretty simple.

i like cooking, but i'm not particularly creative. i pretty much follow recipes exactly. regardless, here's one that turned out pretty damn tasty, care of giada / foodTV

Baked rigatoni with bechamel sauce

Bechamel sauce:

1 stick unsalted butter (4 ounces)

1/2 cup and 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 quart whole milk, at room temperature

Pinch fresh nutmeg

Sea salt and white pepper

1 cup grated fontina

1/2 pound thinly sliced prosciutto, julienned

1 pound dry rigatoni

3 tablespoons unsalted butter, diced

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.

Bechamel sauce:

In a 2 quart saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk until smooth, about 2 minutes. Always stirring, gradually add the milk and continue to whisk until the sauce is smooth and creamy. Simmer until it is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. This will take approximately 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in nutmeg, 1/2 cup fontina, prosciutto and season with salt and white pepper. Set aside.

In a large pot, bring to a boil 6 quarts of salted water. Add the rigatoni and cook for about 5 minutes. Since you will be cooking the pasta a second time in the oven, you want to make sure the inside is still hard. Drain in a colander. Return pasta to the pot and pour in bechamel sauce. Using a wooden spoon, mix well until all the pasta is coated with the sauce.

Into a greased 13 by 9-inch baking dish, pour the pasta with cream sauce. Smooth out top and sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup fontina. Dot the top with diced butter and bake in oven for 25 minutes or until bubbling and the top is golden brown.

Pre-Game stir fry.

2 pans needed. I have a nice wok that I use for the vegi's and I use a good non stick frying pan for the chicken.

2 Chicken Breasts (Good for 4 people, I like leftovers).

Handfull of snap peas

Handfull of diced carrots

Small handful of sliced onion

4 Tablespoons soy sauce.

6 Tablespoons teriyaki sauce.

2 Tablespoons red cooking wine.

1 Clove of Garlic

~6 Tablespoons of vegi oil.

Cut the chicken breasts into strips. Preheat the frying pan on medium heat. Add a drizzle of vegi oil (you will strain later). I prefer to wash my chicken off. I don't like the slime that comes standard on store bought chicken. Also dry it.. you don't want to boil the chicken.

Add the chicken to the already hot pan.

While that cooks start cutting your vegi's. Preheat your wok to medium with a few tablespoons of vegi oil. Add the vegis to the wok.

Strain the chicken to remove oil and any water that may have come out. Wipe off the frying pan of any remaining residue. Add a tablespoon of vegi oil and put chicken back in cooking until it is golden brown.

At this point the vegis should be sizzling. Give them a good few tosses and add your soy sauce and teriyaki sauce. Toss in the chicken and give that a good toss until everything is lightly coated. Let that cook uncovered for a few minutes.

Serve with white rice.

I had this tonight and usually cook this before I have a game (usually about 3 hours before hand). I eat a very small portion and fill up on water to counterbalance the salt.

I do my stir fry in the same pan. Tonight I did this:

Slice the meat very thinly so it cooks pretty quickly

Add a very little bit of oil to the wok

Fry meat until rare-medium, remove from wok

Add a very little bit of oil

fry veggies until just short of being done, remove from wok

equal parts black bean paste and mirin 2tbsp each or so (flavor to taste)

I also throw in some habernero flakes to heat it up a little

heat sauce and add back in meat and veggies

Stir/mix constantly and by the time the sauce is mixed completely the meat and veggies will be done

You can even do this in advance and leave in the fridge for a day or two, just don't include the veggies. The sauce will soak into the meat and make it even better.

Great snack:

Throw english muffin in the toaster oven, toast both sides

Place a slice of tomato on top, set oven/toaster oven to broil

Once it's hot and steaming, throw a bit of tobasco or other hot sauce on the tomato

Slice(s) of cheese on top Meunster and American is a nice combo and back into the oven/toaster oven on broil until it's all melty

Total time: 5 minutes or less.

BBQ New York Steak

I got this really easy Bobby Flay recipe out of Maxim magazine. Cook your steaks this way and you'll have a better steak than 99% of most steakhouses. All you need is a gas BBQ, good NY steak, olive oil, salt, and pepper. I increased the cooking time by about 30 seconds, because I like my steak cooked medium, but you can adjust to suit your taste. 3 minutes per side is a little on the rare side, but still good.

-Heat gas grill to 500*F

-Brush olive oil on steaks completely

-Sprinkle both sides with salt and pepper

-Put steaks on grill for 3 minutes and 30 seconds exactly

-Flip steaks and grill for 3 minutes and 15-30 seconds

-Remove steaks from grill and let it rest on a plate for 5 minutes exactly (it still cooks inside during this time)

-Return steaks to grill for 1 minute exactly to reheat them

-Remove steaks and enjoy

here's a delicious baked potato soup i'll make every once in a while, copied from teh internetweb.

INGREDIENTS:

* 2/3 cup butter

* 2/3 cup flour

* 7 cups milk

* 4 large baking potatoes, baked, cooled, peeled and cubed, about 4 cups

* 4 green onions, thinly sliced

* 10 to 12 strips bacon, cooked, drained, and crumbled

* 1 1/4 cups shredded mild cheddar cheese

* 1 cup (8 ounces) sour cream

* 3/4 teaspoon salt

* 1/2 teaspoon pepper

PREPARATION:

In a large Dutch oven or stockpot over low heat, melt butter. Stir in flour; stir until smooth and bubbly. Gradually add milk, stirring constantly, until sauce has thickened. Add potatoes and onions. Continue to cook, stirring constantly, until soup begins to bubble.

Reduce heat; simmer gently for 10 minutes. Add remaining ingredients; stir until cheese is melted. Serve baked potato soup immediately.

This baked potato soup recipe serves 6 to 8.

Sometimes I'll add some red pepper flakes, but it's damn good as is.

Rocked this but subbed a bagel for an English muff and it's quality. Secret ingredient is the hot sauce. This makes for a nice pre-workout/hockey bite when you need some fuel but not a full meal.

I also subbed the muffin with the bagel. Very good light snack. Allthough, what isn't good with Franks Red Hot? I'm looking forward to try and make some of these other recipes of soups and stirfry's etc..

True that. You got love for Texas Pete's?

I try to buy the Xtra hot flavors of Red Hot or TP. I like Tabasco as well, but I'll usually support Pete or Frank.

A guy at work brought something back from Mexico...or Cuba, can't remember... called "Death Sauce". Another guy (who LOVES spicy stuff) put a dime sized...DIME SIZED...drop in a pot of chili. Not a bowl...a whole POT of chili...and could barely eat it.
