2008 NHL All Star Game

Recommended Posts

Soo many pros have no clue about their equipment... It is kind of odd with how important equipment is for the game. Luckily for the players, the equipment managers are damn good.

Yeah that shit was a complete let down. Props to Ovey for atleast TRYING something fun. Sad thing is the best highlight of the whole night was when they showed the clip of that 9 year old kid doing the spin o rama michigan thing. I don't get why more guys didn't do things like that. Yeah chances are your not gonna score but thats not what that contest was intended to be about.

It didn't suprise me that the guys in the shootout weren't going hollywood with the moves, I don't think they have them.

Guys who I have played with that pull the lacrose and behind the back shit, are usually marginal players in game play and thus not allstars. Maybe next year, do what the NBA does with the dunk contest, bring in non allstars who are known for this stuff, get Edmonton to call up Schremp and let him thrill the crowd.

They had next years #1 pick Stamkos on TSN last night, doing lacrosse and behind the back shots, they had him finish with "These are some of the moves you will see in the shootout", I quess not, at least Ovey tried.

I was talking to JR in the chat and made the same comment. It's sad when a 9-year-old can pull off a move better than Getzlaf. It did make it funny though.

That 9 year old probably spent ten times as many hours practicing that move as Getzlaf did.

The obstacle course had good intentions but jesus......and i think they were scared to try anything for the breakaway skills...i mean who cares if you score? do something...hahaha and domonique wilkins was even confused why he was there....man did you see the look on his face? But...lets be honest...how bout kaberle.

was it me or did they completely butcher the fastest skater competition?

i think they posted all the times backwards and then on top of that they pulled kovalchuk out of the finals and stuck in campbell.

Yeah, they did. I'm watching it now on tape...I just got through the Young Stars game....I liked the relay event. Some legit hokey skills in there.

I like that they've added a Finals to the events rather than a declared winner.

Okay, Pronger falling was funny! "I'm day to day with hurt feelings"

I'd like to see more of the creativity comp and less of everything else.

However, I think that if the player doesn't score, there shouldn't be any judging. Or at least they should give the scores to the goalie instead.

Take the goalie out and give them a bonus for hitting a target

Or at least make them stay on blue ice...

all i know is whoever was controlling the wireless mic's on the players should be fired - i think i heard the f-bomb at least three times from them not turing off the mic's while the announcers were talking

I haven't heard any yet...were you watching CBC or Versus?

I'm reminded of Bob Uecker in Major League. Something about cussing on the air and not caring because "it's not like anyone's listening."

Wait. What'd Perron do again?

A little comedic lifting of the eyebrows. Theres a pic in the thread dedicated to him

Good to SEE someone having fun, not just saying they were.

For the breakaway creativity thing they need to do what the nba does for their dunk competitions and bring in guys just for that event. There are plenty of guys who are really good with that sorta thing in the league that arent all stars

I think you guys are being WAY to critical of the "judged" shootout. That was fun. Yeah...they need to tweak it...maybe use targets instead of a live goalie...as Chadd suggested.

Getz & Ovie both tried some cool moves. Kovulchuks drop to the knees shot was a good attempt. Ovie with the hand to the ear (a la Hulk Hogan) was the showmanship that the NHL wants to see.

I think it's just easier to shit on the League and say they fucked it up than it is to say they tried something new that needs some work to be perfect. I hope they keep this idea for next year. Tweak it...and make it better.

I agree to a point. They realized last year that they needed to change things around and you have to give them some credit for making the attempt. On the other hand, many of the problems were easily forseen and avoided. They deserve some slaps on the knuckles for those.

Most NHL players aren't good at that stuff because it's utterly useless in a game format. Why waste time practicing things you can't use in a game? It goes double for the all star game because most of those guys have been around for a while and are even less likely to showboat.

When you play on a pond or you have extra ice,and theres not many people there, you're bound to try a few new things. When your by yourself your not gonna shoot and pass all day, you get bored and try new things, and I think every hockey player has tried doing a few tricks or two, and if you haven't it's cause you can't. Just cause a guy has been around in the league for awhile doesn't mean he can't go and try to win the trick shot contest, which is where you are supposed to actually 'showboat.'

Overall the skills competition was pretty good, the young stars game was probably the best part, and the breakway challenge wasn't a good as i thought it would be, the players need more time to pratice for it.
