Full cages - what do you use

Recommended Posts

For the 'Polishprince85' and his/her balls comment. I appreciate the interest on the subject as it is a private rink.

As for the testicullar fortitude, 10 units bridge, re-built left side of the face, permanent muscle damage, etc. Spartak Moscow juniors under 16, friend accidentally stepped on my face.

38 years old, been playing since I was 6. Oh yeah, still had enough juice left to make a baby boy.

I guess you are right, I do need to grow some balls.

As for the LawGoalie, I do not consider it a perversion or bad luck to try on goalie gear once in a while. Though on the record, all goalies are crazy.

Thanks everyone folks, I am on a mission to check the JF480 (I am assuming it is a pre-RBK product?), Itech(s), and NB8500.

Just for your info, if have any eye/orbital issue, the 5500 Oval is a real bastard, at least for me. The vertical spacing and horizontal bar size and angles are just right to piss your brain off in a worst way.

Again, many thanks.

Let us know what you decide.

Also, not sure if others had this problem, but I tried mounting an Itech RBE VIII on my 4500 and the wide bars at the cage's top did not allow for alignment with the screw mountings. The FM480 has bars at the top that point inward, allowing for mounting on almost any helmet. I had a pair of L hinges and it mounted fine, but I didn't like its heavier weight coming from an FM480, so I switched back.

just grow some balls, ditch the birdcage and go play some puck. This is hockey men, lets remember that, if you think your to pretty to play then stay off the ice.

I guess you missed the whole "private rink requires a face mask" part that was mentioned.

What about those beer league cages that are like an updated Cooper HM30 cage with no chin?

I have the lighter broomball/box lacrosse version of this and swear by it, like Osgood only 1/2 the weight. It has no chin cup, nice fish eye slots, still a little obstruction but nothing like a full cage. Only risk is a butt end through the fisheyes but what can you do. There was a guy on ebay selling updated versions of these. Don't know if he's taking a break or lawyers got to him.

butt end will go through any cage. before a game, my buddy thought it would be funny to pop me in the face mask thinking the square holes on my mask were smaller than the end of his stick (with tape wrapped around). well, he was wrong and i ended up with a sore cheak. this was with an itech cage. my bauer cage has the same sized holes.

To all, 480 cages are now being sold under CCM umbrella, with a Jofa stickers on the sides, CCM chin cup, and CCM bag. This is the best cage I have tried and it is a world of differences when compared to any of four NBH products I tired (4000, TV4500, TV5500 Oval, TV85000), NBH helmets cut at least 10 degrees of your vertical FOV (field of view).

If it was an attempt for a milspeced rifle scope or a bino, they would not make it through the door. Definite handicapper.

Thanks again for the advice compadres.

Yea I'd second taking a look at the RBK 5k cages, I'm pretty sure they are longer than Bauer because my friend had to switch his RBK cage out for a Bauer because the RBK was to long.

If you can find an old Jofa bubble (Model # 51-270?), that is the way to go!

I have one and I love it... I just put the cage on a few weeks ago and I have had no issues with the transition

I'll give another nod to the Jofa 480. I have a black one and I love it....I used to have a white one but had it replaced because it got dented up.

As for the 51-270 mentioned above, I used to have one but got rid of mine (and I kick myself for doing that). It was a great cage and I may try to find one on ebay if I can get it for cheap.

Curious as to how the Vector cage compares to the 480.

I've used a 480 my whole life and am currently using a Vector cage with the Vector helmet for our team. The Vector is much, much shorter and the side straps run through the chin cup, which I don't like. The Vector cage also seems to be squared off a bit more. The 480 is a better mask in all aspects. The floating cup with straps attached directly to the cage, it is longer, and looks much, much better. I would not recommend the Vector to anyone.

Ditto. I'm wearing the 480 on my Vector. Personally, I'd put the 480 on any helmet I buy before I try a different cage.

I think the 480 has a longer design? I noticed the 51-270 chin cup actually sits nicely on my chin. Any thoughts since you have worn both?

To be honest, I can't remember...it was a long time ago (when I wore the 51-270). I just remember the visibility being great on it.

I use a chrome 480, and it does the job.

I would add that I tried on the Mission Intake with a Phantom cage. The white on the inside of the cage really makes the cage "dissapear".

I did not use it in a game, but I'd love to try it out.

Which NBH/Jofa(RbK) cage would fit on an Intake? Those Itechs are kinda hard to get so i'd stick to the mentioned ones.

I have the Jofa FM 480 on my Mission Intake. Fits perfect. I haven't found a cage better than the 480. I use the Bauer oval on my 8000 helmet and find it slightly heavier and doesn't have quite as good a range of vision but still not too bad. My FM 480 has fit almost any helmet I have owned. Very compatible with most of the major brands.

the jofa/ccm 480 cage is the best cage there is. plus the large is the longest cage ive seen. the visibility is great and its pretty comfy for a full cage. ill probly never switch cages.

looking at getting a 480 because ive heard so many good things about it, but for now ive still got my old (almost rusted out :P) 4000 true vision, and it works great. fairly light, not vision issues, and the dull silver colour blends with the ice quite well
