Recommendations for shin guards...

Recommended Posts

Got back into hockey a few years ago and have slowly been upgrading my equipment as I've been playing more and more.

Started with Itech 440 Techlite shin guards (13") and was looking for something else now that they are wearing out, mostly the straps. Looked at the Itech 955s or whatever but they don't make 13" ones for some reason.

Was looking at the Nike Bauer One90s in 13s since I recently got a pair of One90 pants and love em. Tried finding the One90 shins locally and no one carries them for some reason.

Any recommendations for quality, no nonsense shin guards? I'm more concerned wtih fit than safety/padding since I play in a mens, no check league. I play wing but there's no way in h#@l I try and block slappers in front of the net.

Thanks!

the NB one90's seem a tad overkill. I just purchased these a few months ago:

http://www.hockeygiant.com/nbhsup30sgsr.html

Build seems good, they've held up fine so far and I like how they've done the straps (though I still use a strip of sock tape of course). They provide good padding and they work just fine.

Looking at the one90's it looks as though they've got a bit better protection measures and the ergonomics are better. the kneecap looks like its a little more conforming and it's got a little mesh airing system. Also the main strap looks as though its like a fold flap, instead of 2 thinner straps at the top and bottom that you're used to.

The one90's look great, I think you just need to decide whether you need the extra features. I've never been a fan of protective gear that tries to do too much (namely shoulders, elbows, and shins) but for no frills and just solid padding I like my supreme 30's.

I like my one90s. They stay in place very well, are nice and light and comfortable. The knee caps aren't the greatest in the world but they are fine(you can feel it when you drop on your knees hard). I've taken a couple slappers off the shin and haven't felt anything more than pressure. Taken a few good slashes, same thing.

Not to get off-topic but I'm glad to hear good things of the One90s. I'd rather go with something else but they're the only ones with my size so I'm going to add on some, *sigh*, Warrior blades with my order this week.

Supreme 70 shins are great if you have skinny legs. If your legs are wider I'd suggest a reebok 5k. You could wear either pad no matter how big you are but I find the reeboks run wide.

That's similar to my experience. My shins/calves are a bit skinny and the One90's fit great. I'm probably about a 13.5", and the 14" seems to fit a bit small, so it works out well. I am using shin tape since the top strap doesn't hold quite as tight as I'd like, but they have blocked many, many shots without any problems. And the calf protection is amazing.

The RBK shins were definitely too big for my legs, a lot wider, but the straps held tighter. And the 13.5" ones were too small. Also, the calf protection didn't seem quite as good as the One90, and they were bulkier.

For reference, I was using Bauer 4000 14" before, which fit a bit wide and were also a bit big.

Just a FYI, they seem a little short for the sizing. Maybe .5" smaller than a CCM or RBK.

BTW, my calves are huge and the shins fit great. Just took some work "molding" the honeycomb padding.

if you arent playing as much, i would suggest going with the supreme 70s

they offer alot of protection and i wouldnt be afraid to step in front of shots with those on

I highly recommend the TPS R6 shins...I got my for 49.99 at my LHS, they are probably cheaper online. They are extremely comfortable, no motion restriction, not bulky by any means.

If you want a slimmer tapered shin pad go with the Easton Synergy S-9 or S-5. The Nike/Bauer Supreme One/90 or One/70's also a good shin pad. If you like a wider shin pad go with the Jofa 9,8,7,6 or 5K or the Mission Fuel 110 or 85 shin. All are good protective and light shin pads.

i have a pair of mission fuel 85s and i love them! they fit perfect and i can move great in them too. ive blocked plenty of good shots and they have outstanding protection they would hold up in just about any league. theyre also very comfy and for only $40. i like them loads better than my old bauer vapor shins that i payed nearly $80 for, cant remember what # or whatever the vapors were though...

i HIGHLY reccomend the fuels give them a good look. you wont be disappionted

I highly recommend the NBH One90s. I've had mine for a few months now, and they've proven to fit perfectly, have great protection, and they stay in place (which is a top priority to me, I hated when my old pads moved around on me).

I'm also in the market for new shins since my RBK 4k's recently died on me. I'm looking for something more narrow since the 4k's were a bit too loose on me. I think I've narrowed down my choices to the One90, Supreme 70, Easton S9, S5. I've looked at my LHS last week but the only ones in stock were Chara-sized. I like to wear my shins over my tongues. My main concern is that the Supremes are too narrow on the bottom for me to do this comfortably.

I wear my shins on the outside. I had an issue about them being too wide to go inside the skates and too narrow to be comfortable over the tongue. My solution? Clear tape. Holds the shin right where it needs to be.

BTW, I only use tape on the bottom to hold the shin where I want it and on the tight to help my socks stay up... it is soo nice to have a shin stay in place without tape. If only they fit perfect over my Vapors.

I play up 99% of the time so really I wasn't looking for alot of protection. I wanted the lightest, thinnest pads I could find but still well made. Ended up w/ the intermediate Reebok 4K's,13 1/2". Thought they might be too narrow at the bottom but haven't noticed any problem. Again I went for something very lite and narrow. Felt funny as an adult buying an intermediate sized pad but they just fit the bill. Other pads were Easton Synergy's, pretty thin well made. My LHS only had one size, 15", so went w/ the 4K's.

You can't go wrong with the RBK/Jofa line. I've been using the same pair of Jofa 7500s for the past 5 years and only now am I looking to replace them as one of the velcro straps is on its way out.

RBK/Jofas just don't fit me.

Fuel 85 has these odd "wings" at the top. Looks and felt a little strange.

I went with the Supreme 70s. The strap system is simply amazing and stay on rock solid without any tape.

Make sure you try them on first!

I second this opinion. I have Jofa 8090's and they are still in great shape after 3 years or so. They're absolute tanks.

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up finding some 14" One90s at a local shop for $69 so I snapped em up and they fit great!

Do yourself a favor and take a look at the blue honeycomb padding on the back of the calf. Mold that to your legs... They feel amazing when you first put them on but after you mold them to your leg they feel even better.
