Who's got the best slap shot?

Recommended Posts

I was what some of your opinions were on who has the best slap shot in the league? I was watching the Islanders/Flyers game tonite and the color announcer was talking about how Marc Andre Burgeron has one of the better slappers in the league.

I guess in order to say who has the best slap shot, it would be a combination of how hard they shoot and the ability for the puck to sort of have eyes of its own and find a way through the traffic to the goal.

As much as I hate to say it, I think that Chris Pronger has one of the best in the league. It just always seems to find its way to the net and I'm positive that it is really moving when he lets one loose.

A couple of other guys that might be up there would be Souray, Gonchar, or maybe even Heatley (even though he uses his more in the slot than from the blue line)

How about Mike Fisher? He hit 105 mph in the Sens skills comp. Ovechkin's is pretty deadly and accurate as well.

I was going to say Rolston.

But in my many years of watching hockey, I haven't seen many that were as good at one-timers as Lecavalier. He's got a nice slap shot but he excels in one-timers.

im still amazed at how many goals kovalchuk scores from the left point on the PP. half of his powerplay goals look exactly the same, one-timer off a cross-ice pass.

Phaneuf has one of the hardest, Rolston's is only effective because he takes ten shots a game (only hits the net with about two).

Kilger has the best if you're talking about pure speed, but he can't get it off during games, let alone hit the net.

Another reason why the Skills Comp shouldn't just be All Stars. The guys hits 106 at the Team skills...and 102-103 wins at the ASG, and gets dubbed "The Leagues Hardest shot".

Kovalchuk and Ovechkin have probably the best one-timer technique - which, for a goalie, is something to be feared. You don't know for sure where it's coming from (just a basket of space), it's always backdoor and while you're moving, you're on the minimum threshold of possible physical reaction, AND it's probably going to be labeled. Not a great position to be in.

Now, Rolston seems to be the guy of whose shot goalies are actually afraid. Unlike some of the guys in the thread who don't get it off much in games, goalies know they'll be facing like ten a game from him, and they'll all be fast as hell and *heavy*. He seems to hurt goalies with his shot more than most.

I think it's something hard to judge. A one timer will more often than not be faster than a slap shot. McInnis was known to have the best or one of the best slapshots in the game. Brett Hull destroyed goalies with his one timers. I remember seeing Jason Arnott leaning in a one timer that came from a pass or clearing attempt that hit the board on got in his wheelhouse. He was playing I believe for the Stars and they were playing the Avs. To this day I think Patrick Roy is still looking for that puck. All you heard was the noise the stick made when it made contact and a fraction of a second later a loud bing when the puck hit under the cross bar or inside the post.. I don't think anyone really knows where it hit as it was so hard a shot.

There are many "unsung" heros in the "slapper" department that we don't get to see or hear of that much because they don't often use it in a game etc.

in terms of fear factor Souray and Chara have got to be up there too. i still remember when rolson shot a slapper that went under theodore's pads, came out the other side, and in (04 playoffs).

Kovy and Ovechkin set up for their one-timers on point or near the top of the circle. Lecavalier sets up outside and lower than the faceoff dot, much smaller target to hit.

Ovechkin's slap shot isn't incredible, IMO. His snap shot and wrist shot are more than money though.

I love watching Kovalchuk rip them from the point on the PP, hes got the best slap shot in my opinion.

Is there a video of the 105 mph Fischer shot?

I would have said Souray, but he hasn't shot the puck well in what - a year?

Chara's a good one. His stick's big enough to form the main arm of a catapult.

Good point about Lecavalier, too - I just don't see enough of that guy, thanks to the increasingly lame coverage here.

I watch every game. I think if you look in the previous allstar thread from last year, I said that Lecavalier should have been in the hardest shot comp. Then this year he gets second place with a new stick that he hasn't been using.

He's not hands down the best player in the league but that isn't because of his skill, it's his heart(or lack of). Believe me, been watching him his whole career.

The goalies are afraid because he usually unloads them from below the hash marks - they don't even have time to duck.
