pick up hockey (shinny) pet peeves

Recommended Posts

As a polar opposite to the last post I made about how great Tuesday night pickup was, apparently Wednesday nights are NOT noob friendly where I play. Since Tuesday is 1/2 drills and 1/2 pickup, it's generally the lower skilled guys that show up. I went to the Wednesday night pickup and only lasted a couple of shifts. Playing against guys one more maybe two divisions up teaches you a lot and they'll pass you the puck etc... but these guys were Div 1 and 2, for sure. It was a total waste of time. They'd take the puck from you the moment you got it, and it was just one big game of keepaway. It wasnt fun, and I wasnt learning anything. I said to hell with it, I'll stick to Tuesdays, and went home. I'm all for getting better, but this was just too much.

I learned playing against players like that. It deff sucks and you never get the puck but it taught me how to play positions, cover players, and how to play the puck with little time. All things I needed to keep up in beer league.

And to add to the pet peeves from a goalie perspective, the guys who warm you up by breakaways only. Doesn't do me any good to pull my muscles but its always funny when they come in and I just stand still

And my personal fav, the guy who takes a slap shot in the slot in pick up. They second they wind up I either skate right out of the way or ill charge them with a diving pokecheck, They usually get the message...

I have played against people who think they are all that and its annoying especially as someone who is newer and cant skate all that well.

I was playing a game that had players under 18 and over 18. Oldest was probably 22. One of the kids that was playing lost and edge and hit the boards pretty hard. The play went the other way and I looked to see if he was all right but he was having a hard time getting up. I went over and asked if he was all right and he told me no. One of his friends skated over and we helped him off the ice all the while everyone else continues playing. If it wasn't for me and and his friend he would have been standing in the corner hanging on to the boards all night long. It really made me mad to see most of the players there continue playing with an injured player on the ice especially a younger one. He did come back out and play once he got checked out.

One of my pet peeves is people who don't keep their shots semi low... especially the guys taking slap shots from the blue line...

Me too because Im the guy in front of the net covering his face so I don't get hit.

If there's a guy taking slap shots after two or three times and they've been pretty high, the next time he winds up I throw my stick at the puck. It's worked every time to get the point across.

I think asking/telling him to keep his shots down is better than throwing one's stick.

To the idiot who plays defense in pickup and gets the puck and ices it to clear it out of the zone instead of try a breakout play/pass or skate it out. But when i strip the puck off one and i get a two hander to my skate tongue not once but twice, not amazed.

Sorry man, for the insult or whatever you would call that. lol

haha no worries, it's not like you insulted me or whatever. I guess society as a whole is slowly becoming less tolerant of this stuff, at least here in Canada

the idiot who plays defense in pickup and gets the puck, on my team we all skate up and make a breakout, this guy and the rere's on his team grab the puck and ice it to clear it out of the zone, i strip the puck off one and i get a two hander to my skate tongue, not amazed.

Is this one of those puzzles where you rearrange the phrases to create a coherent statement?

I learned playing against players like that. It deff sucks and you never get the puck but it taught me how to play positions, cover players, and how to play the puck with little time. All things I needed to keep up in beer league.

I think that only works to a degree though. Playing with guys 1-2 leagues above me, sure. But these guys were easily Div 2 or better. There was no way to learn to play positions because I couldnt keep up with the sheer speed of the play. I like a challenge, but $20 to skate back and forth isn't exactly fun OR educational. I guess it's a good workout... but I could just get on a treadmill for an hour for free if I wanted some cardio...

Oh, and I have a new one from the other night. Some Gretzky wannabe (who celebrates every goal like it was game 7) decided he was gonna hack the back of my legs as I'm skating with the puck. Ends up knocking me off my feet he was hacking so hard. Like dude.. lay off... at least let me take a shot or make a pass here. Give the newbies a chance...

So I end up in the dressing room because the back of my leg is killing me... walk around in circles for 10 minutes and went back out there. At first I wanted revenge (which is not cool), but when he acts like that it's hard not to. So while battling with him in front of the net, I kinda hacked the stick out of his hands. He got super aggressive and I'm not sure if its because he wanted to fight or if it was just because he was trying to protect the net without a stick. Either way, I got to the bench, smiled, and it was over. Was good enough for me. I could have done worse, that's for sure!

^^agreed^^… another one that bugged me was a similar situation. I was playing in a relaxed pick up game and had this player (not a very good skater) horse collar me using the lower back pad on my pants. I ended up skating away from it but was a little angry. A few plays later the same guy was tying up my stick and slashing the back of my legs when we were no where near the play (except for maybe a stretch pass)

Now that most hockey seasons are over the kids are skipping school to come out and play lunch hour drop-in. Last year when this happened I never really thought much about it, but I'm also one of the 3 guys at the skate that played juniors or better. So the kids have deemed me worthy of a pass. The rest of the skate is pretty much novice adult beer leaguers and a few newer skaters. The kids by in large won't pass to them, and that's understandably frustrating. I also think it's a bad show on the rink's part that they're letting kids that are obviously minors skate during school hours.

^^I^^ have a solvent for that problem. We've been getting invaded in the pickup i normally attend every saturday, (havent gone back in about 4 weeks straight because of them) but we had some kids who were doing the same crap. Like the guy above being a gretzky, but super cocky and just plain being a doucher.

One hacked the back of my legs and left some nice welts on them, made walking very hard without getting some gnarly cramps on my calves. I finally had enough towards the end of the pickup session because anytime i came nearby him or had the puck he didnt try to take puck away or take the body on the boards, he would just hack at my legs from behind or above the kidney pads on my pants. So we're skating up the ice to my defensive zone he hacked me again after i told him he should probably stop for his own good. I shove the butt end of my stick into his stomach, pull it back after hearing his breath leaving his body and seeing him bending over, then smack him on the ear piece with my butt end. He grabs the puck and is told he's off sides i get behind him and start giving it to him verbally and laughing and he leaves as he leaves i tell him "what did i tell you? try it again and see how worse it gets."
