NHL to sell adspace on jerseys

Recommended Posts

The euro jerseys wouldn't be so bad if they didn't have a background color for each logo. Keep the jersey color with writing and logos would look a lot better than a patchwork uniform that they have now.

I wouldn't be happy in the beginning, but I think it's something that everyone would eventually not even think twice about, but as long as they leave the ice alone. In europe the ice looks like a coloring book.

I would imagine it would be similar to how it was/is n the AHL- maybe sponsor logos on helmets?

Most AHL teams have a sponsor logo on the right shoulder/chest. It's probably a 3x3" patch:

Hamilton - Pepsi

Toronto - McDonald's (I think)

Rochester - Blue Cross

etc...etc...

Adverts on jerseys always seems to be a funny topic here in North America I've noticed (I guess because it is still unusual here), as soon as someone mentions the idea the reaction is always based on the idea that walking ad boards are the sort of thing that is being suggested, which I doubt any sane team would allow as it would damage their public image and their brand. Don't get me wrong I don't like the walking ad board look either however we've had adverts on sporting strips for years in the UK and they look like this Scottish National Rugby Strip and Celtic Football Club and its not damaged any teams brand image or ease of identification (e.g Celtic have been a club since 1887 so their brand is older than some countries).

Its not as bad as it sounds as I really can't see anyone going for the walking ad board option here and I'd even go as far to say that I'd welcome small tastful adverts on jerseys it if it lowered the NHL ticket prices which are so much more expensive than tickets for comparable sporting events in the UK even with the dollar(s) being worth half the value of the pound currently.

whatever man, it wont bother me any....but what bothers me is that i have to take out a loan to take a family to see hockey game. if they do this they should look at lowering ticket prices or something so a family can actually go to game and not have to worry about expenses...

I could deal with a small ad on a helmet, but I'm from the school that a jersey is sacred.

I do think Euro jerseys look cool, but they look bush league.

I'm guessing the revenue generated from Ads on jerseys/helet will have ZERO effect on ticket prices.

and zero impact on the price of replica jerseys.

and i think we will still have to watch the same amount of ads on tv, so its just a cash grab then i assume.

I hate the idea, I'm glad to see it's only in talks with goalies participating but once the ball gets rolling and they see the money its only due time. I just think the league has to ask.. Do you see it in any other of the 4 major leagues? no, so they don't need it to survive and it takes away from the integrity imo. You'd never see a yankee jersey with a big SONY over the pinstripes, and I certainly don't want to see a Habs or Leafs jersy with advertisements all over it.

I might be sick in the head but I kinda like the "busier" euro jerseys.

I used to hate them; but I must admit they have grown on me (at least my HC Davos Jersey has).

Sven's jersey from his German League Team is pretty sharp as well (not too busy with ads).

As taken from TSN.ca earlier today...

What wasn't on discussed whatsoever Monday was the front-page story in Sunday's Toronto Star that suggested NHL players put advertising on their uniforms.

"It's not something that I've ever had any reason to believe that the Players' Association or the players would ever agree to," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman told The Canadian Press on Monday. "So it's not something that we've given any thought to."

There you have it. Now that Bettman has the green light, at least from goaltenders you have every reason to believe that this will materialize.

The players are suggesting that it might bring in as much as $30M. Let's analyze that number for a minute. 54% of $30M is $16.2M, divided by 30 teams is $540K. That's the number the cap will go up for each team. That's barely enough to cover one minimum contract or an extra $27K for every man on a 20 man roster. It doesn't make sense to throw tradition out the window for what is essentially a few pennies.

But would yu agree that most players would do it even if it doesn't add up to much more than a month's rent for these guys? Not to insinuate every pro athlete is that incredibly greedy, but the big picture would be, that those numbers will only increase with time also.

Pro hockey players are, on average, among the cheapest professional athletes.

there is a postabout the nhl bringing back 3rd jerseys, so what if they did the big ads on those jerseys, and kept it to like a shoulder patch on the normal jerseys...

I'd hate for the NHL to be the first major NA sport to cross this line.

they wouldn't be the first.. MLS (major league soccer) already does it.

He said MAJOR NA sport!! :P

Who said the NHL is a MAJOR NA sport?

Wow people... So the NHL wants to put ads on the jerseys... Who here watches/plays hockey for the jerseys? Didn't quite think so... if you guys are so uptight about ads on the jerseys, you need to come to terms with the fact that the world is greedy, nothing we do will change it so its about time we start living with it >.>
