why is the NHL highlighing Avery?

Recommended Posts

describing playing in new york "better girls, better clothes, nice cars"

he sounds like a tool, if Sid was pulling those lines out I'd be right behind him but Avery is a standard player

anyone else here wonder what the hell the NHL marketing dept actually does all day?

Obviously he's a tool, but also: He played in L.A. before New York - aren't there girls, cars, and clothes there too? It's not like he went to New York from Edmonton or something.

They are giving Avery press for the same reason that Mixed Martial Arts is getting major network air time.

When he played in LA he got his share of press. This is just more of the same.

Don't be surprised when MMA / UFC starts getting better Nielsen ratings than NHL games.

That is the reality we are going to be facing soon, its pretty sad but indeed true.

The NHL has some serious possibilities with Sid, Ovy and the other russians yet a majority of the country just doesnt care about hockey. I'm glad I have the NHL network b/c if I had to rely on sportscenter I'd only see a clip when someone got in an awesome fight or a real cheap shot like the bergeron hit

He's cut down on his diving and he's certainly not the only one still attempting it. Watch a Habs home game on a Saturday night and you'll see dives that would make Greg LougANUS proud.

Not sure if any Ranger fans saw clips from their recent Casino Night, but I actually know one of the girls that kissed Aves in one of the clips. She said that he didn't want to get caught on camera because "His wife at home would get F-ing pissed". Somone else told me he's dating another actress, but not sure who. Being the most hated NHLer has it's fringe benefits I guess.

He is being highlighted because he has a personality. Whether or not you like him, you can't deny that. Would you rather market someone who gives you great sound clips and a good interview, or a Malkin who doesn't even speak the language? Avery is a sideshow, but he is good at attracting media attention.

Mack is in love with her mustache :P

;)

No shit, that muzzy is enough to warrant everything being wrong with her.

Avery's dive today, for all that he's done to do it less, negates any improvements. It was the kind you'd do as a joke playing pick up.

I wouldn't say I like Avery, but I don't hate him. The NHL has to do anything it can to be interesting, and he is at least mildly interesting. If there's anyone in that league that has anything more to say in an interview than - "the boys worked hard tonight, and that was a big two points!" - I'm willing to put up with a lot out of them.

In a way I'd rather the NHL market Avery than Crosby. I'd much rather hear someone say what they want then read textbook, scripted responses in a monotone voice. The NHL needs to market more players who say what they feel and want, rather than say what they should say. It'd give the league much more excitement and personality.
