Expensive Gloves

Recommended Posts

I have been buying expensive Nylon gloves for the last couple years mainly because I love how light they are. I really like my all Nylon Pro Stock Synergys but after seeing some of the new low end gloves I am really considering going with an all nylon "cheap" model. I understand they might have a little less protection, but who gets slashed in the hands in Adult league anyway? Has anyone noticed a difference in feel? Thoughts?

I view gloves as the ultimate "luxury" buy when it comes to hockey equipment. You can always find a very suitable (and well-made) pair of gloves at bargain basement prices. They might not be the newest, lightest, or flashiest, but they'll be sufficient for most levels of play. That being said, if you got the cash, and you're a gear whore, get those custom *whatevers"!

It's up to you.

In my opinion, as long as the palm is fine, who cares what materials on the outside, because the feel of the palm is going to be what matters, and in the end whether you get expensive gloves or cheap ones the palms will gets torn up, heh.

Id go with the most protective gloves you can get. Hands are fragile and should be protected well. Its not fun beinge left with the use of only one hand because of injury.

yikes what adult league do you play in? I get my armpits my ankles my hands hit with sticks all the time. You can't stickhandle through people because of how the refs dont care about a stick in your armpit. Anyways, i would say get higher end gloves. I use NBH 4cuff rolls. 90 bucks and there "pro" models.

Cheap gloves = crappy palms.

Some expensive gloves have crappy palms but cheap gloves never have good palms.

The palms are outrageously thick on lower end gloves. I also hate how crusty they get over time. After using a pair of expensive gloves, it's like night and day when you use a cheap pair of gloves again.

Gloves are my biggest weakness and probably what I am most picky about....even moreso than sticks/curve/lie.

I bought my XX's right when they came out. Use them about 80% of the year, consecutively for the past 4 years (or however long its been since they've come out). Anyway, the only hole is in the outer layer of the palm (not all the way through) and they are crazy broken in, probably the best feeling glove I've ever worn. So IMO, more expensive gloves are worth it.

Yeah, probably should have been more descriptive that "crappy."

Cheap gloves have stiff/thick/undurable palms. High end gloves often have performance palms, which aren't extremely durable. Normally, the gloves just under highend have more durable palms that aren't horribly thick.

If you have search around the forum you can pretty much find out what palms are durable and which aren't. Besides that anything besides the lowest end model should be good enough protection.

i may be a gear whore, but I feel gloves and sticks are the best conversation starters on a bench. There is nothing better than a sick pair of gloves. They look good, they feel good, and i'd rather spend a bit more money on a nice pair of great looking light gloves.

I really don't need very much protection, but if they have thick palms that don't offer a good feel of the stick then it's not worth it. I still might buy a pair for 40 bucks just to curb my curiosity.

Well gloves connect you to your stick, which connects you to the puck. They might not have to be expensive, but feel is paramount. If cheap gloves feel good, then all the power to you.

Tampon and heel specifics also make for great conversation as well.

I have a pair of new NBH 4 roll's that cost me less than $100.00; I dont consider these expensive, I love the Nash palm and the glove is very protective.

I'm using a pair of $40 Vapor Apollos right now. They're working great. They fit a bit tighter than the Vapor XX's, are a lot lighter in weight, nylon, and the palms feel fine. And the best part, whatever Bauer does to their gloves, they don't smell at all.

My old gloves were Vector Pros, and they are a lot heavier, and the palms only lasted a few months. Plus after two skates they just wreaked, and nothing I've tried (Febreeze, dryer sheets, Nature's Miracle, lanolin, soaking & scrubbing) has removed the smell.

I bought the Apollos to hold me over while getting the Vectors repalmed, but at this point I don't think I'll bother. The Apollos are working fine.

The downside would be that they aren't as protective, but my league isn't too physical and I've only been slashed once. Also, they smelled like nasty glue for the first couple weeks, but some baby powder and airing them out took care of it.

Shame they don't make them in black/red/white though.

I 'skimped' and went with Easton Stealth S5's, closest LHS had them $49 also. Not as thick palmed as most cheaper gloves, if your willing to get last years models you can save a lot on gloves. The S5's are light, and I still dangle D's half my age-unless you really go cheap the gloves aren't going to give you "hands of stone"

I had Eagle X70's, amazing feel but the fingers and palms fell out after 1 year-durability has to count for something. Going through this discussion with my 10 year old right now, I'll pay $3-400 for skates and get top end JR stick but want his gloves to last 2 seasons-not paying double for 1 year.

Anything Eagle is good IMO. I've been using their mid-high end gloves for about 10 years now and have found them to be the most comfortable and very durable. In fact, I have a pair of silver Eagle X50s that I used for over 5 years and the palms never ripped. The color started to fade though from tons of use and actually looked like a natural leather color with some hints of silver... haha

I've got some Mission Soldier gloves I'm using at the moment. Despite being cheap, I think the feel is good but I really don't know because I've never spent much $$ on gloves. Any opinions as to whether buying a new pair of $89 would help me at all?

I also have these gloves and they seem to be a good glove for the money. I also picked them up cause I needed a new pair of gloves quickly but didn't know what I wanted so I got these as a pair to use till I decided on the glove I wanted but I may just stick with these. I have no problems other than that they could be a bit more protective.
