Is Scott Stevens one of the top 10 D-men of all time?

Recommended Posts

I ask because according to http://www.torontosun.com/Sports/Hockey/20...027221-sun.html

8. Larry Robinson

7. Denis Potvin

6. Paul Coffey

5. Eddie Shore

4. Nicklas Lidstrom

Stevens was good...but, who from that list would you take off to make room for him?

Not only is he NOT in the top 10, I can think of 10 more people I would put in front of him. He was a big hitter... but NOT a great defenseman.

He won a conn smythe as playoff MVP. He anchored a defense to 4 stanley cup appearances and 3 wins. He scared the bejesus out of players coming across the blueline.

Who are your next 10 on the list, just out of curiosity

I'd question Chelios on there a bit...amazing longevity for sure, but I don't know if at his peak he could be one of the 10 best d-men ever.

A name I'd throw up for discussion would be Leetch, ridiculous skill level.

I didn't think of the other 10 yet, but I will. He wasn't even the best D-Man on his team. Try Neidermayer. As far as the Conn Smythe.. seriously? There wasn't ONE player on either team that had a better series? Anchoring the defense... again, can't see it. I give all the credit to Niedermayer on that. Maybe he anchored that drunk Danyeko, but that's it. I WILL Agree that he scared the bejesus out of opposing forwards, but that was because he was a DIRTY hitter. There is a video floating around of his top ten hits, check it out. About 7 or 8 of them was when his D partner was tying up the player, then big bad Scotty Stevens comes swooping in for the kill when the puck carrier is focused on the man actually PLAYING D instead of headhunting.

Everyone makes a scene about the Lindros hit. Believe me, I am NO Lindros fan, but the hit was clearly elbow in chin.

So, you can't think of 10 like you said. Thats fine, just checking.

The conn smythe is for best player in the playoffs, not one playoff series, as you indicate with your "seriously? There wasn't ONE player on either team that had a better series?" He was excellent throughout. He played with an edge, and some of his hits were dirty, as are most players who hit often, ovechkin, phaneuf, iginla etc etc all fall into that category, but not all of them, and I would argue not even most of them...just some of them

Stevens was a good player but 10 top? No way IMO, for starters he couldn't replace anyone on that current list, but theres without doubt a mass of NJ fans that would happily disagree.

Agreed 100%. When I first looked at the list, I said "I'd put Stevens up there before Chelli." Then I scanned through a couple times and said "Wait - where the Hell is Leetch?".

Leetch

Savard

Park

Neidermayer

Salming

Red Kelly

Pierre Pilote

Fetisov

Tim Horton

Pronger?

No way Stevens is in the Top 10 All-Time.

Bourque and Harvey are awfully high on that list...

Harvey's got a right to be there, but should be really be six spots above Robinson?

Bourque was a great player, but there are a few guys to consider over him, and there is no way in hell he should be above Shore.

#1 Scotty Stevens was not a dirty hitter. If you think his hits are elbows, look at how many elbowing calls he got his whole career. If my memory serves me correctly its below 10.

#2 He didn't head hunt, he saw the ice and layed punishing hits on players who weren't expecting the hit. Look up

This being said, the only people I would put him above are McInnis and Chelly, but then again I think Neids and Leetch belong there before Scotty

Chelios in his prime was a top ten of all time. Granted that was almost 15 years ago, but still.

I think alot of people on the site may have trouble remembering Cheli in his dominating years. He was really a special player. Very mean, very aggressive and could put the puck away. He was a special player. I don't think Stevens could crack that list and I think a few of the names listed on the previous page (who are not on the list) also trump him. I'd put Nieds and Pronger ahead of him. Stevens has the post-season success, but now each of those two have cup rings, both have Norris's and Prongs has a hart too. There's been points, seasons, where each of those two D-men were the best in the NHL. Everyone on the list is the same. I don't think I can say the same for Stevens. There was always a D-man or two who were better. Then there's some guys like Murphy, Borje, who were around Stevens. Very good d-men, but never the best in the league and never really the face of their team (I put Brodeur as the face of the Devils, then Stevens).

Stevens was good but not top 10. maybe top 20. However, i'm a bit shocked Leetch didn't make that list. Leetch is better the Cheli and McCinis. Like said before Cheli is good but he's great only because he's been playing forever.

If you define a great player as someone who can control the tempo of a game by being there, plus what they have accomplished in thier careers then I would say he was in the top ten (but not sure where or who to remove).

As far as Pronger being in there...not a chance. Talk about an over rated, dirty player. Eight suspensions in his career so far, and counting.

He's not in there in my list. He was a punishing hitter, a good defenseman, not great. I would have Lidstrom at 2 on there though.

If u watch the video like someone said most of his hits are when another defenseman has tangled the forward up. The lindros hit is an absolute disgrace im suprised his next hit wasnt a dropkick after getting away with that! the kariya hit was bad aswell, kariya wasnt looking because the puck was gone and you cant say he was finishing his hit, there was enough time to ramp down instead of the damage he did. without a doubt a good d man although dirty and his record is something to be proud of, but i dont think hes top 10. niedermayer and pronger deffo should be higher than him
