Tax Rebate Checks

Recommended Posts

After an all-nighter spent writing a 15-page paper on the morality of murder in Shakespeare's Hamlet and Macbeth, I needed a laugh. Thanks, mack.

It's honestly what I'm doing though. I needn't splurge on anything though I'm tempted.

As for the refunds/rebates thing, I don't get people's excitement about getting them. Giving the gov't an interest-free loan is never a fun thing in my mind.

Little "end of semester" celebration, Kosy?

No we're on quarters so this is only week five. My buddy goes to school in Arizona and is done this week. I'm flying down and then driving back up with him. I guess you could call it an end of midterms celebration.

It means they aren't really a rebate of any kind, I suppose if anything it's a rebate for filing your taxes, which you kind of need to do anyway.

So how is a rebate not a rebate? You're getting money back, you're not paying tax on that money, and it's not an advance on next year's return. I guess that concept is a little too difficult for people to handle.

Ah but it is an advance on future returns ergo, not a rebate.

Well arn't they using it as like a one time tax cut for 2008? So instead of waiting for the tax cut to reach us next year, they are giving it to us now?

And even if we don't buy foreign goods...I think the money is still probably being borrowed from banks in like China to get us this advance.

Either way, I get nothing...parents got me claimed. Should have given it to younger people who will surely blow it on something rather than pay the bills, lol.

Either all towards paying off my last credit card, savings for when my car's tranny acts up again and needs to be fixed or replaced, or a combination of the two. And hookers, of course.

OK, once and for all, some facts about this stuff.

5. Myth: The tax rebate is taxable income and I'll have to pay taxes on it next year.

Fact: The rebate is a rebate. It is not taxable income. You will not have to pay taxes on this money.

1. Myth: This is just an advance on next year's tax return! I'll get less next year!

Fact: This is incorrect. Marketplace's Tess Vigeland figured out where this silly little rumor was coming from: "the last time the federal government issued checks, back in 2001,the stimulus was indeed an advance, of sorts, on the Bush administration's tax cuts. The bottom line went from 15 percent 10 percent. So, maybe folks are assuming that it is the same this time. It is not. This is not an advance on next year's refund."

From consumerist.com

Also with this "the government is borrowing money from the Fed" and "interest-free loan to the government" nonsense: 1. $6 trillion in national debt already, I don't think this is doing a whole lot of damage in the grand scheme of things. and 2. Everybody gets the same deal on their returns, income tax is inevitable, so get used to it or move to Saudi Arabia or something.

For word? I figured, given Bush's requests that we (well, "you" - I won't be receiving a check) plug the money into the economy, you stating that you planned to sit on it was more of your ironic commentary. That being said, I would likely do the same thing (minus the whole "kid" and "college fund" part.

has anyone thought that the rush for this stimulus package was because of this being an election year?

i like to think of it as the "hand out money so they elect me" package

back on topic:

new gear?!?!? duh

Except Bush isn't running for re-election, and McCain is against the rebate.

So most of you single guys from the states only get $600? I'm glad it doesn't work that way here I'm looking at $2600 in a few weeks.

I'm just going off on what I heard on the news a while ago, I could be wrong.

Anyways I think I'll be getting a Macbook for work and paying off my nice license ($800). Being a dumb driver sucks.

Edit: I was thinking this is your income tax return, or is it? I'm confused.

I'm lucky this year, I ONLY had to pay $660 for my license.

My $3400 went towards truck goodies and my many, many speeding/redlight tickets.

I still plug money into the economy at about the same rate I had, even if a lot of it is diapers, and won't buy anything big. Screw any of Bush's plans, but I may dedicate some of it to my GTA:4 fix.

It's just an exit strategy to leave everyone with a sweeter taste in their mouth from this administration. I'm really not into politics whatsoever, I'm not a Bush hater or supporter, but I think it's pretty obvious that a lot of citizens have expressed disappointment with this administration and the war and such, so it seems to me like the rebate is to give the taxpayers a better feeling about Bush as he leaves and to kind of screw the incoming administration by wasting some $$.

My return also will pay for my GTA4, also the excess food and fund for lost wages because my life is shot once tomorrow morning rolls around.

This "rebate" has nothing to do with your 2008 Federal tax refund or bill. The money, if you are eligible, will come separate from your refund but via the same method, electronic being preferred.

Well, my tax returns are going toward remodeling my bathroom, paying on my wife's CC, and some general upkeep on the house. Depending on where our CCs are when the stimulus check arrives, it will either finish paying off the CCs or be put in savings I guess (although I really want to buy more "toys"-guns and hockey equipment specifically).

A Republican is also much more likely to get elected in the upcoming election if the final year of Bush's term has good economic growth.

All of the current candidates are 1: not very republican (much like Bush) and 2. are trying to seperate themselves as far as possible from this administration.

and back to on topic!

True, but if the economy turns around before November, do you really think McCain won't try to take advantage of that?

I think all the candidates will. Hillary, Obama, and McCain will say it was their work in the Senate.

The politicians will spin whatever news however whichway they need it to win.
