Winter Classic 2 - Chicago!

from TSN

It appears that NHL Winter Classic will be back and making a visit to the Windy City.

TSN has confirmed that the Chicago Blackhawks will take on the Detroit Red Wings next January in what has become the league's annual outdoor game.

Following the success of this season's Winter Classic in Buffalo, where a record 71,217 fans watched the Sabres take on the Pittsburgh Penguins at Ralph Wilson Stadium, a number of cities have been pushing for the right to hold the event.

There was talk that the New York Rangers were looking into the possibility of hosting a game at Yankee Stadium. With the baseball team moving into a new stadium next season, it would have been the final event held in the old ballpark.

It is not yet clear whether the game would be held at Wrigley Field, home of MLB's Cubs, or Soldier Field, home of the NFL Bears.

WOW!

I am a bit surprised they wouldn't do a Canadian game this time around, but this would be something to see!

Montreal had been pushing for one (Probably at McGill Stadium) so they could tie it into the 100th Anniv. stuff they are doing.

Chi-Det should be a good showcase game for the League. The Powerhouse (and possible Champs) agaisnt a team FULL of youth, looking at a bright future.

I know there were issues with the field, but I am a little disappointed that they could not work out the issues for a game in Yankee Stadium.

Yankee Stadium would have been great for a lot of reasons. It would have been truly the last sporting event held there before they tear it down and open up the new Stadium. This probably would have drawn a lot of attention and ratings. I could only imagine what ticket prices for that would have been given that now you need a small bank loan to go to a Yankee game!

As a Yankees fan, I'm glad that the last sporting event at the Stadium would be a YANKEES game.

So that's going to be September 21 against the O's? :P

MLB dropped the ball for making them finish out on the road.

And playing the freaking Orioles as the last game at home.

For anyone that went to the Buffalo outdoor game...how easy or hard was it to get tickets? I would love to be in attendance in Chicago.

Didn't it sell out in a matter of minutes?

Canadians already flock to hockey, better to generate more interest in US cities.

Yeah, they sold-out real quick - and they had some issues with the server, if I remember correctly, so "hit or miss" was the name of the game where online purchases were concerned.

That being said, it seemed like everyone I know knew someone through whom they could score seats. Almost all the real hockey fans I know at school either got or had access to tickets. My brother is a tech at Northtown Lexus - they had a nice big suite for the game, and my brother was nice enough to get me "the hook-up." Given the nature of the event, I was a bit bummed to be stuck in a suite with a bunch of old men in suits treating the game as little more than a social gathering instead of sitting on a cold plastic seat in the snow and wind (the way it was intended), but beggars can't be choosers.

Sounds like Chicago is not a done deal. If Daly is still talking to the Yankees point man, it seems like Yankee Stadium still is a long shot. The logistics with the winterizing the Stadium bathrooms, etc., and the money involved work against Yankee Stadium getting the game. And please send a memo to the Islanders and Devils to kindly shut up.

I think football stadiums are a better option for these outdoor games than baseball stadiums would be. Let's assume they put the rink in right field then how the heck are people going to be able to see from the seats in left field, or even worse the third base line? You're talking about those seats being at least 200 feet away from the rink. The argument goes the same way if they put the rink in left field. At least football stadiums are generally symmetriacal and all the seats start around 50-75 feet from the rink.

The rink can be put in so that one end will be against the seats along the third base line and the rink extends out to the outfield along the first base line. That would bring folks a lot closer than any football field can.

The seats across the street from Wrigley would be fantastic if it was down the third bas line.

Apparently the League had no intention of announcing this until after the Finals ended. The Cubs leaked the info.

WGR550 in Buffalo was talking about it this morning.
