WhiskeyTango19 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 So yeah... last sunday night I was playing in my men's league game. Got tangled up with someone, not quite sure how it happened. All I remember is falling and feeling/hearing a SNAP before I even hit the ice.WORST. PAIN. EVER.I had hoped it was only a real nasty sprain, or maybe even a ligament tear, but when I lifted my leg, and saw the botton half hanging... I kinda knew. Broken. Left leg, both the Tibia and the Fibula. Each bone broken in several places. It wasn't a clean break, it was what the doctor called a shear break. As in the leg wasn't bent until breaking, it was TWISTED until it broke. Every nurse or doctor, or whatever who saw my X-rays just said, "WOW. How did you do this?" Or something very similar. Everyone was shocked. Then I got to see it. Gross. Pieces of bone all over the place.I had to get surgery. Rods, pins, plates, screws, the works. I feel like my leg should be bionic with all the steel in it now. No cast, just a walking boot. The doctor says I have to use the boot, along with crutches, for about 8-10 weeks. Lovely. Then the therapy starts. Oh, and even more great news: to insert the rod in my leg, the Doc had to cut through the Patella Tendon in my knee. So when I go to therapy, I get to rehab my leg AND my knee. I was told probably no skating for about a year. Totally sucks. Thanks for letting me vent/rant on here. Smitty34 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 Sorry to hear that. It must suck to be out that long. I broke my arm during a season, and I couldn't stand being off the rink. That pales in comparison. Good luck with your rehab.
gxc999 7 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 Sorry to hear about this man. I'm hoping/praying for your quick recovery. In your free time this fall, play fantasy hockey and watch a ton of NHL games, it'll probably fulfill your hockey jones.
Fletch 219 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 Damn man, reminds me of '94 when I broke my right arm in half at my forearm (it looked like I had 2 elbows). 2 plates and 17 screws from that. In any case, good luck with the recovery!

ju87 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2008 Wow, that sucks! I wish you a speedy recovery.I broke my fibula 2 yrs ago playing, but that break is nothing compared to yours. The only advice I have for you is to elevate that leg as much as humanly possible to keep the swelling down and to drain the bad blood from the break area.Going through hockey withdrawal and being sedentary at the same time is going to test your nerves. Hang in there!
Balmer15 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2008 And I thought being out for 2 or 3 months a few times was bad! That sucks so much. Hope you get better before they said. Luckily I've never broken a bone...so don't even know what a minor break feels like!

Sounds like you are WAY worse off than I am. :( The one thing I have to keep me entertained is that I already have a nasty NHL 08 jones for the 360. I only play a few games at a time. Right now its NHL 08, GTA IV, and some old SNES/NES games. I just beat Assassin's Creed, so that's out of the rotation. I'm totally waiting for NHL 09 to come out. I don't have MSN, or any other messengers. Used to use them, but not anymore. I don't have Xbox live, but if I get it, I'll PM you for your gamertag and we can play. Is rockband worth the money? Heal quickly and completely my friend. I'll keep in touch.--Chris
Aussie Joe 0 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 FoxtrotUniformCharlieKilo! We had a footballer here do almost the same thing. He bounced back after about 9-12 mths and he has never been the same since. Im not trying to be the voice of doomsday but thats how it progressed. I have seen that injury before at hockey and it was nasty. Keep your head up, speak to the docs/physios and go from there. You'll mend and be back soon!

Luckystrike 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 man, that sucks dude! Best of luck! I have been rehabbing 2 foot surgeries for the last 2 yrs, it sucks bad and can be slow recovery. Your patience will be tested so be prepared!
sabby47 2 Report post Posted July 4, 2008 Whiskey, sorry to hear about your leg, sounds brutal! I'm getting through my second knee surgery a lot better than my first with watching the full run of The Office, movies, browing MSH, and spending time with my loving teammates and friends. Sometimes spending time at the rink makes it better, and other times it makes you really miss playing. I had to sit through three tourneys, two of which my teams won the championships. I think the biggest difference was that my bf kept coming up with different things for us to do since almost all we did before was play hockey 5 times a wk. We designed and painted his goalie mask, played NHL 08, and we took water aerobics classes. It's hard and there are times it really sucks and you realize how much you take for granted being able to do something as simple as walk properly but just remember that you will skate and play again and when you come back you'll realize how much you really love it. If you ever need to talk to someone feel free to PM me.
bdj 0 Report post Posted July 4, 2008 Start renting game and trying out new things. When I was recovering i got into RPG type games that helped me sink countless hours into it. If you really want a time sink get an MMORPG game like Age of Conan or World of Warcraft, but kiss any social life you had goodbye.
Grinder 2 Report post Posted July 6, 2008 Remember that mental attitude plays a huge role in healing and rehabilitation. Work whatever muscles you can right now (arms, chest) anyway you can, if it's possible. When the time comes for physio, bring your game face and work hard. Good luck and never quit! WhiskeyTango19 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2008 Sabby, I know what you mean. The crappiest part for me is that I work in the Pro Shop in my rink. When I finally DO go back to work, I HAVE to watch other people playing and enjoying themselves. It's like inviting the kid that can't eat to a buffet. :( Oh well. Grinder, I am trying to work on my mental attitude, but I have ZERO patience as it is. I'm trying though. It's getting a bit better. All I can do is just take it day by day. At this rate I will have completed like 15 dynasty seasons on NHL 08. :P
WhiskeyTango19 0 Report post Posted July 14, 2008 Ok, here's an update: I got copies of my before and after X-Rays. I hope the pictures come out allright.I'm able to walk on it now without crutches or anything, and get up and down stairs. Hopefully only a couple more months before I can lace up skates, even if it is only for a public skate.
