Poll shows N.C. residents don't know Hurricanes exist

Recommended Posts

im an NC resident, and as painful as it is to admit it, the poll is true...if it doesnt have four wheels and a big engine...or at least the color "carolina" blue on it somewhere, people are generally oblivious or ignorant regarding it (even if they did win the cup)

I was hoping hockey would take off faster in Florida after the Lightning Cup win. This really puts a downer on that theory.

Please, I can't believe anyone is surprised. It's North Carolina!!! So 18% don't know about a hockey team, please. Like the article said, 6% can't name the VP. Ever watch "jaywalking" on Leno, some people are just so stupid they don't know Hitler's first name (that was an actual question). What does it matter that 18% don't know about the canes. If they can get the other 82% of N.C. attending games, which is more important than knowing, it won't matter that only 18% don't know about hockey. Plus it's North Calorina!!!!

Plus I'm sure if a pole that asked New Yorkers to just give the name of a NYC hockey team, 18% wouldn't know it either.

I'm more surprised that anyone else is surprised.

Hockey is doing very well in Tampa Bay, Miami and apparently a few other cities as well. You can't really expect it to succeed in the panhandle, where the average income and education level is astoundingly low.

A friend of mine was in the South (can't remember if it was Atlanta or Carolina) but he heard a woman behind him say:

"No wonder they don't win...they keep taking there best players off the ice"

I can garantie you that if they ever did that in MTL or TO that 100% of the population would know there was a team.

I'm just not going to go there.

there's people 6 hours away in the mountains, this state is freaking huge. And, most of those polled were over 65. It was short sighted

Have you ever been to a game here? people who think there arent fans here are just as dumb as the ones that got polled.

I'm tired of the bullshit.

Sounds like you've watched one to many episodes of the Sopranos.

I wasn't insulting N.C. even though I generally don't have a very high opinion of the south. First, I'm pretty sure 18% of the nation or even the world are pretty stupid. Like I said before there is a huge group of just really dumb people all over the world. Second, not everyone knows about sports. I have a doctor who's all upper east side high society with galas and black tie events at the oprah house and all that. Ask him to name any NY sports team, he can probably say the Yankees, maybe the Mets and probably nothing else. My main point was saying that in a state where hockey is very very far away from the most popular sport, it doesn't shock me the 18% of people don't know about the Canes.

PS: did I go on a rant how I can picture a white KKK wannbe toothless drunk sitting on his porch thats falling apart playing a banjo with his shotgun by his side, screaming "YEE HAAA, NOW THAT DALE ERNHART BOY, THAT BOY CAN DRIVE LIKE THE DICKINS"? NO, I didn't because I realize most people in N.C. are normal people trying to make a living that have adapted to the way they live. These people are no different than any average New Yorker. But I'm sure you have your share of hicks just as we have our share of guidos. I'm sure I'm used to the Guidos and your used to the hicks.

So I better not see any trash on New YAWK cause I'll call ma cuzin Vinny, and u'll b sleepin wid da fishes.

Hard to make a sport that is far behind baseball, football, basketball and even golf compete in places that there is no interest in the thrill of hockey. Makes you wonder, since the Hurricanes and Lightning did win the Cup, how much longer Canada will be shut out of more teams while many franchises in the States can't generate enough interest from their population.

Low interest = low income/revenue. Even with a Cup. When will this math get to Bettman.

However, I don't believe all franchises in the States should fold or move. I just think that there are cities in Canada that would better support the game. Please don't yell at me if you're American.

Sure, but ask those folks about baseball and Montreal folks probably don't even know the Expos left.

Now, grain of salt on the poll, think about the people who answer them, not usually the best and brightest of the crowd.

False statement. There is plenty of support for the Canes. You dont go to the games so your making false assumptions. And how do you even know they are having income issuses? Because 18% of the state doesnt know who they are? How about the other 82? And Dont even start with Canada. What like Winnipeg? A City that couldnt even keep a franchise in the first place?

Have you ever been to a game here?

Not personally, no. But I have a lot of buddies who, armed with their then-new drivers' licenses, made it down there for a few games a couple years ago. They told me that the building was half-filled with Carolina fans, while the other half was packed with the visiting team's fan base (which was twice as loud as the hometown crowd).

I should make mention that these games were back during the Carolina/Buffalo Conference Final back in 2006. The fact that my buddies (and so many other Sabres fans) were able to pick-up tickets (often only a day...or even hours...before each game) at ridiculously low prices, then go to the games and nearly outnumber the other team's following in their own barn during that team's STANLEY CUP RUN speaks volumes as to what the situation is really like down there.

But then again, as a Devils fan, I don't have much room to be knocking another team's fan base, do I?

That sounds an awful lot like the situation at the Garden in Boston during the last Boston/Montreal series. I suppose Massachusetts isn't a hockey state, either.

Really don't think that theory flies, like you said, the Rangers do it all the time in New Jersey and Detroit had issues selling out this year for the Final...it wasn't instant as most people would think.

Playoff ticket prices are jacked through the roof. I was talking the other day to a famous MSH Ranger season ticket holder. He skipped the playoffs to sell them and get his money back from the season. I thought it should have been the other way around! But, playoff ticket prices are out of line. You go to the game if you have a lot of money to waste, not depending on how big a fan you are of either the home or road team. Ticket prices for all pro sports are pretty damn stupid in my book.

they released new tickets... they had some on hold because they were offering seats to those who signed up for season ticket packages.

As for the buffalo fans... There's a large contigent of buffalo people down here. IBM has 16,000 jobs on the RTP campus, plus people in charlotte. They moved a piss load of buffalo guys down here at one point. Theres a fair number of season ticket holders who are canes fans when not playing buffalo. And well, with lots of buffalo people in the area, they also jumped on tickets.

Puck it nailed it on the head...There are a ton of northern folks that moved south for jobs...The Canes have steady fan base, and alot of support in the Raliegh area...The Canes revenue is actually better than quite a few Canadian clubs...The youth hockey programs in Raliegh have grown leaps and bounds in the last 10 years...The south is by far not a hockey hotbed for talent, but for hockey to have had little to no intrest in the mid- late 80's to what it has grown to today in the triangle area is amazing....But hey Canada if you have any other failing franchises up there we always have Charlotte you can move them too...
