Recommended Posts

okay so i got a quote for a custom mouthguard from my dentist today and he said it would only be $31. that seems too cheap. am i asking for the right thing? they said they would make impressions so i think its what im looking for but the price kinda threw me off guard. not that im complaining ;)

WOW, that sounds like a good price. I say go for it, especially for $31

Maybe, ask your dentist for a sample to check out the thickness and quality.

I just throw my mouthguard in my bag..let it sit with my gear for a few days and pop it back into my mouth when I go back on the ice.. is that wrong?

I got seriously sick from doing shit like this. It's better to either get a case or clean it well before putting it back in.

That got me sick once, but granted, I never used the damn thing much. I would pop it in when the reffs came around and throw it in the cuff when they went away

Still enjoying my Shock Doctor Gravity. I had a crown put in and the thing wouldn't fit anymore, re-boiled, fits great again. $15 saved.

there are big differences in custom mouthguards the question you want to have answered is how is the guard made. Vacuum formed is the least desirable, heat and pressure lamination is the best method. This is the method used by Gladiator. most likely your dentist is making a vacuum formed guard.

what would be the downside to a vacuum formed guard? is it bigger, bulkier, or just less protective? i really just want something thats small, lo profile, and fits good, hence making talking, breathing ect a lot easier. like i said earlier ive been hanging 99 cent mouthguards out the corner of my mouth for the last few years so performance isnt the biggest issue.

Try gladiator mouthguards for $50 you get the highest quality mouthguard available plus they customize with your team logo and your name or number on the side. They advertise in USA Hockey Magazine, thats how I found them.

Does they ship to Canada or do business in Canada?

Thanks

they tend to be to thin to protect and they don't fit as tight, as well as wearing out faster. The pro level mouthguard from Gladiator is the correct guard for Hockey its thin enough to speak and breath easily and still provides max protection.

I believe they ship to Canada but you should call them to be sure

Our local dentist did them for $25. red/white/blue. logo on front. players name on side.

Definitely go through your dentist. They're so much better, I used the boil and bite up until last year and there is a huge improvement. I can talk easier, breathe easier and it's just overall comfortable. I usually get asked by refs if I even have it in because you can't tell it is there.

You have got to try the RBK range of mouthguard from Reebok. These are the best of-the-shelf guards in the world. They are made in Australia by Signature Mouthguards and are supplied around the world and also worn by Olympians. The Custom mouthguard, around $30-40 is an awesome product and uses a special gel that moulds around your teeth. It fits real tight and works really well. These are better than most made by a dentist. They also come with a case. Check them out ;)

I just had breakfast. I didn't have any meat with my eggs, but I do now. Thanks.

For those who don't get that;

On a semi-related note, a manufacturer will be sending us a UV light/mouthguard case to test. Seems like a great idea to me.

Battery operated ?

I wonder how sensitve the mouth guard materials are to UV

I just got my new custom mouthguard yesterday and wow this thing makes the biggest difference. If you're considering it, go for it! So much easier to breath, talk, and drink. Only issue was it's clear (worst color possible) and i had it knocked out during tryouts last night. I found it after, but is there a way to color it without giving it a taste? food coloring maybe?

There are UV toothbrush sanitizers, mouthguards will be fine

That's cool. Is it portable as well? I am currently using a shock doc case which does the job for now , but if there is a more proactive way of fighting the funk I am for it.

gladiator mouthguards addresses this with the free flow system. The mouthguard is made as thin as possible where it will not effect protection. they are currently offering a new guard to colleges called the extreem cut that has almost no material on the inside of your teeth. you would have to call to order this guard as they don't have it on the internet.

Unless the rule has changed in the last year or so, clear mouthguards do not meet USA Hockey requirements. They must be colored.
