Blew a Tire at the Blue Line

Recommended Posts

I broke the blade on my s11's earlier this year, snapped in two at the back, but was still stuck in there. I never noticed until the intermission when I went to wipe the snow off, luckily I was able to skate no problem and got it fixed in time for my game the next day.

I've broken steel twice (first generation LS steel each time). Luckily though both were were at pickup.

In the first intance I was on a breakaway and blew a tire as I was cutting to the net. I ended sliding feet first into the boards and pretty much new right away when I got up that something wasn't right with my blade. It had cracked clean through, almost directly at the mid point. Not sure if the breakage occured on contact with the boards or when I was on the breakaway.

The second occurace was sometime later and was the direct result of a shot from the point. I went to take a couple strides and knew what happened from the past experience.

Looks like you are lucky you didn't wrench/twist your ankle or knee....I'm guessing that was a pretty abrupt stop!!!!

I've broken steel quite a few times, usually from hard passes that I never see coming. My D man took a shot from the point one time as I was skating through some traffic in front of the net. Never saw it coming, snapped my steel right out of my holder and I had to crawl towards the bench.

Darkstar,

That is almost the exact spot where snapped my second blade. However, with each breakage the steel stayed in the holder.

The LS steel was garbage. I used to break enough steel in HS that when I left to go play Jr. the owner here gave me a tuuk wrench as a joke going away present. Turned out to be one of the most useful things anyone's ever given me.

Here's my thread contribution:

PANA0347.jpg

A few seasons back, I found this crack in my blade while in the officials dressing room after I'd just finished lining a minor hockey game. I was towling off my blade and felt the blade wiggle. I discovered real quick exactly what the wiggle was. Ended up having to turn back a few games until I could obtain some replacement steel from HockeyGiant.com. I checked out pretty much every LHS across the border from me in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, but none had non-perforated steel in my length. The runners that came with this pair of 8090s were...yep, LS1! I replaced them with LS2 steel and had no problems.

Broke the Ls2's on my original Vapor XV's during a tourney in similar fasion to moose77's. Had to play the rest of a game with it, and since there wasn't a reliable LHS around and I had a tournament to finish, rocked my buddies S500's with the Pitch all the way back. BIG difference.

I've never had steel breakage.

Pitch Steel? LOL!

Pitch is the best for sure! I have never, ever, seen a broken Pitch, ever. Holds the edge 3 times longer too. I actually should hate Pitch because I lose so many sharpening $$$ from them. I love the Bauers, especially replacing the broken ones. Ca-ching!

LOL. i have broken my fair share of Bauer steel from passes as well. flawed as it may be it has been the #1 holder for some time. i am just surprised it took somebody so long to come out with step steel.

ive got a pair of bauer vapour xx skates that are about 3 years old now. ive just discovered a bit of a crack in the blade, it doesnt cause me any problems for skating but i need to get my skates sharpend and im worried what it will do to the crack. i was told by my LHS that its the old lightspeed blade i think and that they are going to have problems getting hold of them in UK and i need my skates for games, so just wondered if there was any other blade that will fit.

I didn't realise steel breakage was so prevalent. I was pretty miffed when it happened to me more than once. Lots of hockey-playing friends and none of them had heard of it, either.

Is breakage a reflection of sharpening technique, perhaps? Or simply a flaw in the steel?

never broke steel but cracked 5 pair of tuuk holders in one season. my first pair of new skates were daoust 301s with the clear(not tansleunt) holder (cira 1977 or 78). first partice (outside) took a shot of the holder and it cracked. next day rplaced at the lhs. and contunied to crack them until they (lhs) got tired of replacing them and put black tuuks on them. man i miss those holders. they would look awsome on my vapors. even tried to find the rebillon one but could not find them in my size.
