Give the money back to who? The MLB has the strongest union on the planet and have rather well cared for retirees.

I've met a lot of guys that would like to tell you otherwise. Older guys are not very well off in many cases.

Bonds was a no-doubter prior to his steroids allegation...he's a couple levels above a Jim Rice type player. Sportswriters hated Ricky Henderson too, hell everybody hated him, but he's still in there.

I am close to someone on the inside of sportswriting, trust me, Bonds is hated head and shoulders above Rice or Henderson. He still would have had a tough go of it. Writers like to make points with their voting.

Looks like Papi dropped about 15 pounds. That should bode well for the Sox.

At his weight, does it matter? It's not going to make him fit enough to steal a ton of bases or beat out a grounder.

No, but it will help the day-to-day injuries. Plus I'm sure they don't want him dying out there running out a gapper. Then again Greg Luzinski never died on the field so there's promise.

I'm getting really sick of people saying A-Rod "came clean" and was "honest about his steroid use"...

He only went on TV and made whatever statements/admissions he made BECAUSE HE GOT CAUGHT!!!

If he called a PC on the eve of the Mitchell Report and said "I did this and that, I might be in there..." and then turned out not to be named (which he isn't to the best of my knowledge)

THEN I'd say he's come clean...

But, nothing he says...contrite or otherwise...planned/scripted or off the cuff...can be misrepresented (or misremembered to steal a new MLB phrase) as COMING CLEAN

/rant.

There is a great line from the movie Quiz Show concerning this:

Mr Van Doren, I'm also from New York; a different part of New York. I'm happy that you've made the statement but I cannot agree with most of my colleagues. See, I don't think an adult of your intelligence ought to be commended for simply, at long last, telling the truth.

I remember posting in 2007 (or 2006) that it looked like he might be taking something, and mik3 thought I was crazy.

Just color me suspicious that I don't think his experimental phase was limited to his time with the Rangers.

Well, all seven tests he's taken since then have come up clean, so if he isn't using anything detectable short of a blood test.

People believed Giambi when he said he had come clean. The only reason this is still an issue is because people love to hate A-rod.

To my understanding, there aren't tests for HGH. I believe that everyone who has been caught has been due to circumstantial evidence. Also, not everyone believed Giambi. A couple of years ago, he started slowly and then exploded after a public bashing by Steinbrenner. I remember reading that some people had suspicions.

Personally, about the only people who I'm not suspicious of still using are the ones who mysteriously caught a cold over the offseason and haven't been able to put back the fifteen pounds they lost.

No urine test, there is a blood test for it. I did read something a few weeks/months ago that someone has come up with a urine test that may work.

Isn't the problem with HGH not that you can't test for it...but that you have such a small window that it is detectable?

For the existing urine test, yes. It's only detectable in urine and directly in blood for a few hours. With the blood test, no, it tests for a chemical formed in a reaction with the HGH that lasts months.

Following a rods press conference yesterday, Jeter is having one today at 1 pm EST which also should be pretty interesting to hear his opinion on the whole a rod situation.

Yeah, but at least he didn't lie to Congress about it like everyone else.

I'll give him that...he didn't lie (to Congress) but didn't he go on Katie Couric or something years ago and say he didn't use steroids...?

He wasn't asked by Congress. Dollars to donuts he would have denied it. The only reason he spoke up is because they had the smoking gun.

And they've had smoking guns for Bonds and Clemens too, neither of them have admitted it yet.

Give the guy some credit....
