Christian Hockey making a comeback?

Recommended Posts

I heard a rumor this weekend that Harrow Sports has sold the Christian Hockey name and will no longer be making composite shafts with the Christian name and/or selling wood sticks made by Christian in Warroad, MN.

I also heard that some, yet unnamed, person bought the rights to Christian Hockey and is setting up a brand new stick facility in Roseau, MN and closing the old one in Warroad, MN.

Hopefully good things will come of this and it will include new composite shafts/sticks....

well either way it won't matter too much becuse its christian.... the only kids that truly use them are either benders or dusters... mainly the latter.

I just broke a Christian Torch blade after six months of use. Was very happy with the blade. They also seemed pretty responsive around here, but nothing much came of it.

I'd love to have a local company that makes solid products, and any competition is good.

I really liked my Harrow shaft and I've been a fan of the feel of Christian wood blades, if not the durability.

There is no sign of clearouts on the Harrow website and a new paintjob for the 300 shaft was just released. So if Christian has been sold it hasn't impacted any thing Harrow is doing yet.

I have dozens of composite sticks worth thousands. RBK 8k, Stealths, S17, XXX, XXXX, One90, etc, etc...

The torch shafts and one piece sticks are by far my favorite. They aren't the lightest (though I have a few older blue Torch "Lite" sticks that are lighter than ANYTHING out there, but they are reliable, predictable, and I have the most accuracy with them.

What's the story with the 300 series sticks and shafts? Are they high end or not? I'm confused with the 75/25 carbon fiber / fiber-glass mix.

EDIT: I'll answer my own question from an old thread.

A few things to note on the 300 Series:

1. We did have some naming issues with the shaft. We were going to call it the Infinity, but that name is trademarked and we changed it to the 300-Series. As a result of this change, our production on this program has been somewhat delayed. Our next shipment will arrive by the first of February and many of the glitches will be corrected by then. Sorry for the inconvenience.

2. The program very clearly states that it is a custom 2-piece. The only reference to it being a one-piece is when describing the performance. This combination is tapered and truly plays like a one-piece, with the financial benefits of a two-piece. We are not trying to deceive or mislead anybody in any way.

3. Our IT guys are not hockey guys, therefore content on our web site might seem odd on occasion. The 300 series shaft weighs 365 grams. When connected with our blade, the total weight is 525 grams. This is a mistake that will be corrected on the web site shortly.

4. Our shaft is a 75/25 graphite/fiberglass split. We could have made the shaft 100% graphite, but we have found through our testing that the 25% fiberglass gives a softer and more responsive feel. You’d be surprised as to how many sticks in the industry are not 100% graphite.

5. The analogy of our powder grip feeling like a cardboard box is the best I've heard in the 6 years I've been with the company! BK...we have a Director of Marketing position available. Perhaps you should forward us your résumé!

6. The 300 series is not just a great product that we believe in, but it is also a fantastic customer intelligence tool. It gives us the opportunity to learn more about our customers. Through this tool we can evaluate the most popular colors, flexes, and blades that our customers are interested in. Every time you go onto our web site and create a combination that is not available, we register that request and use it for future purchase order consideration. For example, quite a few people have requested the Christian Special Edition design in a powder finish (something we had not planned on stocking). Because of the popularity of the request, we have decided to add this shaft.

I religiously used the Christian Pro #### woodies until I made the switch to shaft/blade combos and even then it was a few years of using the Christian replacement blades.

I know there was some turnover there a few months ago.

Just out of curiosity, was the turnover in leadership, R&D or sales?

Pretty much all of it except for the sales force.

Why would they move to Roseau? Anyone have any idea? As for "benders" using Christian, I believe quite a few of the Warroad HS players have used that brand in the years past and as recent as 2-3 years ago...many are in NCAA and minor pro hockey now..So..I'm not sure if that is a valid statement..

Wow! It will be interesting to see what comes of Harrow and now Christian. Thanks for the insight JR.

I guess Harrow will retain the design rights for their current models. So Christian would have to come up with something new.

There was no "christian", it was Harrow with a different name. Anyone who buys Christian will still face the same reality that most people don't want anything to do with wood products. Short of doing it for an ego boost, I can't see why anyone would buy the name. Harrow put a lot of money into marketing Christian products and it largely failed. Had they put that money into promoting their own name, they would most likely have been farther ahead.

I had the pleasure of seeing a torch composite in person today, at a store. I would've bought it but for the fact that it was intermediate!

I've seen a few myself. It seems as if the Torch shafts sell quickly, all I can find are intermediate sizes

Or it means that the intermediates don't sell at all. I think my old shop still had a few intermediate torches last time I was in there and they haven't put in a christian order in three years.

ohh

You mean kind of like Nik Lidstrom? Or one of the other many NHLers that used Christian blades/sticks before OPS' became a way of life.

I went on the Harrow site over the weekend to order some Christian wood blades, only to learn that they are no longer available. I spent months looking for the right curve, and finally found it in the #4 Christian blade (looked for wood blades).

This is disheartening. I guess I need to move into 21st century hockey and go with a composite blade.

Does anyone know whether it is still possible to purchase Christian woods blades?

ZINC,

I would recommend that you visit the upcoming/new Christian Brothers Web site at www.cbhockey.com. They have specific contact information on that site. I inquired about ordering wood sticks and I received a prompt response. I'm sure they will be able to send you those Pattern 4 "Recchi" wood blades if you call or e-mail Christian directly.

Otherwise, I have found the Pattern 4 Recchi Christian wood blades more challenging to find then other Christian patterns - such as the Pattern 1 Modano, Pattern 5 Iginila, etc. If you are okay with other Christian wood patterns, you may want to try www.hockeyzonemn.com. Otherwise, I saw a lot of Christian products on www.maxlacrosse.com - it looks like they may even have your pattern 4 in stock.

I ordered some custom Christian wood sticks a few months ago and received them from the Warroad, MN factory. They had the best blades on them as Christian seemed to put an extra layer of epoxy/hardener on them. They were even better than the stock harrow/christian wood blades that I've purchased in retail stores over the last several years. I hope the new Christian wood blades will be similar to my newest custom Christian sticks/blades because they have been extremely durable and responsive.
