NHL Center Ice - Montreal Canadiens - French?

Recommended Posts

I'm a HABS fan living in Boston (I know...) am considering buying NHL center ice this season to check out all of the Habs games. My one concern is my lack of comprehension with the french language. Are center ice games just telecasted, and if so would Habs games only be broadcasted in french? If so, I'd have to pass on the 160 dollar charge

I dont have NHL center but I am 99% sure that the games will be in french( except saturday games because of hockey night in canda) but RDS which is the local french sports station has the contract to the Habs games. My grandparents dont know french very well so they watch the games on RDS, put the TV on mute and listen to it on the radio, check if you can get to listen to the station online. I think its CJAD the sation, but I'm really not sure.

its only a 150 dollar charge unless it went up plus dont worry , go ahead and buy it ... usually ( not all the time ) but usually they show both teams broadcasts. For example say the habs are playing the flames they will show the habs broadcast on one channel and the flames telus broadcast on the next channel ....

Last season I noticed that Center Ice was providing both the home and away feeds for a lot of games. You can probably check the Center Ice schedule to find out which games will have both feeds this season.

Depends on who provides your center ice package. One of my friends was picking up all of the feeds on his dish, but on cable I don't have that option.

Outside of them giving great description of an injury or an off ice situation...for the most part hockey in French is not that hard to follow. You'll pick up words and phrases pretty quickly.

Same here. I had cable and half the games were in French. The other half were broadcast by the team the Habs were playing.

dish network + NHL CI = BEST coverage possible. The only thing that sucks is when NHL network picks up a game, then its blacked out. I dont have Dish HD, so i dont get the network.

There was a game last year (maybe the year before) when RDS was used as CI coverage Regionally (in the US) for a Montreal-Carolina game. Not sure why there wasn't local coverage...but anyways...the guys did a break in English welcoming the Carolina audience and said "by the way, when we say 'et la but'...that's means a goal was scored'"

You could also just mute it and listen to the games coverage online at nhl.com. Start it, then hit pause for 7 seconds, to sync with the delay, then you are golden

i can confirm that the canadiens games are broadcast on the radio station CJAD in English. It's AM-800

i know there are many people who watch the games on RDS on mute and listen to p.j. stock and the guys on CJAD. Even though Montreal is considered French there is a HUGE Anglo community.

and if you're wondering about RDS picture quality, it's OUTSTANDING. destroys cbc, tsn and any other station i've ever watched hockey on. they even have HD :P

Sadly, they carry RDS here in Standard Def...

I don't think PJ Stock is part of the CJAD broadcast team. He does a show on rival station Team 990. Rick Moffat does pbp & Murray Wilson does colour.

I don't know who makes the decisions on this (center ice, local cable company, whoever) but my center ice feed in Pittsburgh had broadcasts for only the home teams in each game. The Canadiens were the one exception, and they would almost always show the feed from the other team, regardless of who was home or away, I assume because of the language barrier. The one exception to this that I noticed seemed to be when they played the Hurricanes, because I guess not all of their games are televised, so the only option for them to show was the french Canadiens feed if there were no stations in NC showing the game.

Last year on DirecTV we got both home and away broadcasts. Two years ago once in a while we got the french feed for Montreal games. It never bothered me much. We also got game feeds where they did not break away from commericals. I think one of the 'Canes games the camera men were checking out the chicks in the stands.

I don't spring for the package anymore, but on the free DirecTV week last season all the Habs games were the French feed.

The beauty of that is if the announcers say anything annoying/dumb you don't understand it :P

C'est la but!
