One Piece Sticks Going Soft

Recommended Posts

Hello all I play adult league ice hockey 2-3 times a week and I can not seem to get one piece stick to last more than 3 months. I do not break them but they all go soft on me and lose their flex. I use either the easton s-17 or the synergy se 85 Ignila. I shot pretty hard and I think I get a lot of torque from a shoulder brace I wear. Once the stick breaks in especially the s-17 they are great for like 2 months and then I feel like my shot is dead or off the mark big time. Is this something common or uncommon or maybe I am losing my mind?

I am about 5'10 and weigh 185 or so but I do shoot pretty hard maybe I should go to a stiffer flex? I was even thinking of going back to wood or a two piece stick.

I really am out of options any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks this is my first post.

<_<

Welcome to the board... from my experience this happens with most one piece sticks. I personally usually get a 100 flex (i am only about 5'8) but by the time the stick actually breaks in it feels anywhere between 95-85 which is what i like. If you are really thinking about going to wood i would just like to let you know that atleast in my experience that they break in even quicker than composite.

I think its bound to happen with better players or if you have a hard shot and use it a lot.

I don't use my slapshot that much and my Stealth feels fine to me and I've been using it over 6 months.

You need some Stickagra...

Also, I prefer wood over composite, this being one of the reasons. And if the ONE75 is good enough for Naslund or the Sherwood SOP (closest I find is the 9950) is good enough for Spezza, than wood is good enough for me. Plus it feels so much better and I prefer a weightier twig. Give wood a try! Later,

I am lost and it stinks buying a new stick every 3 months or so and it gets expensive. I guess a 2 piece stick would wear out just as fast.

I have a championship game this weekend, and no good stick so maybe I need to get an old school 5030.

My old TPS responses got soft more than any other sticks I've used. I have an old pro stock S flex that is now more like a whip. I find most sticks break in a little, 10% or so at most, then they usually stick around for a while.

If Easton sticks are whipping out on you, try anohter brand. You won't be stuck with it too long if it ends up not working out, and I'm sure teammates will buy them if the only thing wrong is the flex is going a bit soft for you.

Plenty of other Iginla style blades from other manufacturers. If you've got something that isn't working for you, why stick with it and not at least try another brand? Even if you go with Vapor XXXX shafts (for example) and Easton SE blades to keep the same pattern, then your investment won't be as high each time you switch sticks.

I don't know who would have the same shaft feel/profile as the SE/S17 though. I've loved the Easton shafts, had an SL, and SE and an S17 and loved them all. I think your best bet would be CCM/RBK T shape, or Bauer Supreme OPS (their Supreme shafts are standard). I have no esperience with Mission, Sher-Wood or TPS's newer offerings. Warrior is all pretty much concave unless you find a pro stock, Bauer Vapor has a weird shape, CCM/RBK C profile is concave, I think TPS is all pretty much concave and have grip zones.

Get to a store and try some things out!

I agree see I love the round feeling of the Easton stick, I hate the feel of the Mission sticks I know that for sure they are rather square. I like the more rounded sticks. I am going to go to a pro shop after work and maybe buy a new stick.

I will keep you all posted.

I do wish I would break them as I would feel a lot better then them just going soft.

Have you tried a Dolomite? Mine didn't break in too much compared to Mission/TPS stuff I used in the past, and it's got rounder edges (well it feels smaller than the Easton anyway).

A good 'ol two handed slash to the crossbar will accomplish this ;)

S17 flexes aren't accurate so I wouldn't get too hung up on them.

I absolutely love wood sticks over composite. If your going to use a wood stick I would highly suggest getting a montreal 7700 or else a sherwood 5030 or 9050. The only problem is, with my experience, wooden sticks break within 3 weeks and the sticks I just listed run around $40 a pop. So you can get a composite to last you three months and spend $150 give or spend about $160 on wood sticks in the same time.

Its really one of those things you have to play around with. Hockey sticks are kinda like women. You have to test out every kind until you really find out what you like.

Yeah it was back to the sherood 5030 coffey. One good thing so far I usually cut a little bit off the composite stick but the 5030 I did not have to cut at all and it was like 1/2 shorter than to composite sticks I use after being cut. I have the game sunday so I will let you know how it works out.

after countless broken OPSs i made the switch back to a 2 piece. the blade on my OPSs just kept getting mushy so i figured replacing a $20 wood blade ($5.98 at HM) would be so much easier than cutting and getting a tapered blade for my other sticks. stiffer shaft might help you with the flex going soft, but you'll have to shell out the money for a new one in order to try that. goodluck, and welcome

maybe try a more durable easton OPS such as the ST a little heavier but not too noticeable, and i would agrre on staying away from the 85 and stick with 100 if you stay with easton.

Seems like you might want to try using a 95 flex? Did you ever use a 95 flex? 85 at your weight could be a little too much

I really dont think that weight has as much to do with what flex you use as your shooting style and strength. Im 5 7 and weight 180 but I use a 102 flex one90 cut to the 108 mark and it actually feels a little whippy.

Maybe its time to bring back the aluminum shaft...........

That may be the worst idea I've heard in a looooong time.
