North Stars Pro Nylon- the nylon gets musty and these gloves reek. They would make for a good face wash, that's about it.

Cooper 4 roll short cuff gloves from the mid 80s. I was always placing stock equipment orders with Cooper for my shop then. I had to plead with the Cooper warehouse in Lewiston, NY for these gloves. I told them I would take any color in 4 rolls(the 4 rolls were not a catalog glove) and I got classic Hartford Whalers. These gloves have been re-palmed about 5 times.

I would say mid to late 60s, before Dave Taylor played there. I spent a winter in the North Country in 74-75 in Canton. We used to drive down to Potsdam on Route 11. Clarkson was still a college then, I think.

When was the Armadillo thumb used? My dad's old college gloves have Armadillo thumbs, but I can't recall much else. I saw the green palm and they went back in the bag in the corner of the basement. He played in the mid 70's I think. Probably not a very good collector piece, I'll have to dig them out when I'm back there in December.

Armadillo thumb goes back to early 50s Cooper Weeks gloves. I have another pair older than what I have posted that have the Armadillo thumb embossed on them.

What is it about nylon that makes a glove smell so bad?

All my Nylon gloves smell better then any of my leather/pleather gloves ever have. In fact both pairs have no odour at all.

DarkStar; how do the NYR gloves feel in comparison to today's gloves? Do you have the same puck feel/control over the puck?

The nylon in the North Stars glove is a denier nylon, not today's nylon knit. The use of synthetic materials in gloves was in its infancy in the early 70s. Leather was still the way to go for making gloves. The denier nylon would collect a musty smell if not aired out. Once the stink got into the gloves, there was no way to get it out.

The Rangers gloves have totally pre-curved fingers that allow for total control and grip. You can tell by the picture of the left glove, my bottom hand on the stick, how curved the fingers are. I have another pair from the same years in navy/gold/red with Monarchs embroidered on the cuff. Although pre-curved, the fingers just are not as comfortable. I would love to take a knife and cut the fingers to make them like today's split finger model.

In other words you would love to have the best of both worlds?

I can understand the stink explaination but, as soon as a pong gets into my runners/sneakers, you can never get it out no matter how many rounds they do in the washing machine. The stink always comes back like Voldemort!

Dark Star - I grew up about a mile from the Cooper Lewiston N.Y. warehouse and for the life of me can't remember if it was open to the public. It wouldn't have mattered to me as my parents had no extra money for equipment back then. Just curious though ...

I really love the shown part of the collection in this thread. I'm not one for the older gloves but I love the Rangers, Whalers, NS, Ohio State, Blackhawks gloves. I'd collect stuff like these but I have a thing about using all my gloves and I don't think I could.

you should take the most ridiculously long pair of gloves out of the bunch and put them beside a newer pair of gloves if ya got a pair kickin around, prefferebly the shortest
