Heel lifts vs. custom radius profiling...

Recommended Posts

I have a pair of NBH Supreme 50 skates. I want a more forward pitch. From what I can gather the skates come stock with a neutral or slightly rearward pitched. Should I do heel lifts or custom radius profiling? I am leaning toward the heel lifts as they seem to be more permanent. Will the custom profiling wear off so I would have to have the redone?

If you take your skates anywhere but a good sharpener they could easily mess up the profile (or even if one of the kids does it at the good place). If you get it done by an OK guy the steel could get overheated and your edges might not hold as well. If you feel like going back to neutral a lot of steel ends up being taken off.

If you can get the physical lifts, do it. Especially if you plan on going through several sets of steel, as the profile will need to be redone each time, if not more frequently.

If you go to one guy who consistently does a great job at sharpening, go for the profile, especially if it's cheaper.

Looks like it is profiling for me. The local guy doesn't do lifts. He is very good though, so I trust him to do a good job. I don't need to worry about getting it redone too often unless I start playing more. I only play 1 time a week right now. I think he charges $40. Is that a decent deal?

Can he rivet your skates for you?

It seemed like a very easy thing to do when an LHS put lifts in my skates. All they did was cut piece of plastic to the right size and riveted the skate back in place. If that's the case, do the lift yourself and have him rivet it back for you.

Damn, $40 is ridiculous.

I can sell you lift material and your guy can make them - it's really simple.

it's actually not a bad deal based on local standards here - I got quoted $60

and it's not even about the lift plate itself - it's riveting wirk - here's how the math works: $1 for normal rivets, $2 for copper ones, so 24 regular + 4 copper = $32 right there

plus every sharpening can easily screw up the profile regardless of what it is (I know you'll say it's harder to do with standard profiles & I agree, but still - the profile might change with each sharpenning...)

How do you get 24 rivets if you are putting on HEEL lifts?

don't ask me - I don't work in a shop :)

I just assumed they'd have to redo them all... the price was too high anyways, so I went with profile since I really liked 7/14 combo anyhow

haha was thinking the same thing.

i put a heel lift in my one95's it took about 25 minutes to cut the shim plastic, and re-rivet the back tower

I need advice:

My #1 skates have LS2P holders. My back-up's have Custom +. Both pair have the same profile applied by the same person at the same time. Both pair fit perfect so I'd like to be able to wear them both, interchangeably, without noticing a difference. When I wear the back-up's I feel like I'm way back on my heels.

Am I noticing the difference in the height of the holders? The LS are 3mm taller than Custom +? Would I be a good candidate for lifts on the C+? Or am I noticing the extra length of the Power steel? Again it's 3mm longer correct? Would it be easier to just have the pitch of the C+ steel adjusted.

Damn, $40 is ridiculous.

It has been $30-$35 here for the last ten years or so. Given the amount of time required, I don't find that to be unreasonable. Compare the amount of time to sharpen versus the amount of time to profile and the cost of each and it doesn't seem ridiculous.

Lifts are what you need for sure!

That's a pretty big difference in feel going from LS2P to Custom+. You could get close to the achieving the height difference with profiling and/or the lifts. But the extra length of the LS2P I would think would be hard to mimic.

I went with the profiling and it was $30 to have that done. I am really happy with the results.

The fact that you're happy is the the most important thing and the price seems reasonable.

2 mm lift on the rear tower of the C+ will get you equal pitch-wise.
