Smaller Pads

Recommended Posts

I have been playing hockey for about a year and a half now. When I started, I purchased a set of NBH pads off of hockeymonkey.com. They work fine, but they are way too bulky IMO. I haven't been playing long, and all I play is beer league. Does anyone have a suggestion for new pads that might be much smaler/lighter? The pads I have would be great if I was in a league where there was hitting, and you had to block slap shots and stuff, but I don't get to do any of that really, so I would rather have equipment that is not so bulky. Any ideas?

Thanks.

What kind of NBH pads are they? I've found most of the NBH pads to be somewhat light...You could go for the NBH classic supreme shoulders or the Sherwood Classics as well. I assume you're talking about shoulder pads?

do they interfere with your playing? If so are you sure they are sized right?

Trying stuff on is your best bet to get the feel right. If you have a play it again sports (or something similar) maybe you can work some deals that way.

I have only ever played beer league hockey. I am happy to have good shin guards (rbk 6k) I have taken a lot of shots and falls in them and never noticed. I got some Supreme 30 elbows after banging them on the ice 1 too many times in cheap soft elbows.

Maybe start with a less bulky shouplerpads first, bauer or easton classics, sherwood 5030s or the small itechs (can't remember model). See how those feel on the ice. I have easton z-air shoulder that are bulky as hell. I cut all the shoulder caps off and they feel much better.

Or track down some Itech SP50's. I prefer to play without anything, but I still wanted some sternum protection. Itech SP50's are really small and light, and the shoulders are removable with velcro straps. I like them a lot.

Easton Classics, NBH Classics, and Sherwood 5030's are the way to go for beer league. Most of the traffic that comes through here is for our GSHL league, and the 5030 is the number one selling shoulder pad we have.

Do you play in the GSHL too? The only thing I didn't like about the 5030's was the lack of sternum protection. The SP50's are just as small and lightweight, but they have a big thick sternum/back pad.

I've seen a lot of people in the higher divs tape or glue sponges to the inside of the pads. Similar 'style' of the Farrell pads, if you will.

I sub in div I and III.

I love those pads, cause I hate shoulder pads period. They've gotta be the lightest and coolest(temp wise)pads ever. I was the same way just worried about the sternum, it took a little while to get used to how they sit on your shoulder but I wouldn't trade them for anything.

Well you definitely set him straight and let him know that there are Walmarts in Canada. And now we also know that in Canada there are jerks who call people "ignorant" for not knowing something. Lighten up, EH?

I would second the Sherwood 5030's. You could also go with the Easton S-7's or the Bauer Supreme 50s, both slim and light.

If you are just looking for sternum protection, just take a pair that some nice sternum protection and cut the shoulder and arm pieces off. You really them if their is no hitting. That is my dirty little secret.

I play with such reckless beer league morons, I have to wear ulf samuelsson grade padding. JR can vouch, he saw my skate to the armpit wound from a few weeks ago.

I've stopped wearing shoulder pads and haven't had anything happen yet. I'm thinking about just getting a thorax or something like that.

If you're not getting paid, you're nuts to not wear protection. Insurance may fix injuries, but that doesn't mean it'll ever be the same.

Exactly, wear something because you never know if your going to fall awkwardly or have a freak occurrance. Seems to happen a lot in these beer leagues. Even with no hitting hockey can be a fairly hazardous game.

I concur. All I play is in pickup games and a couple of tournaments during the year, and I've dislocated my left shoulder twice already this year. All it takes is an awkward collision, and I'm fucked. I ditched my Itech SP50s for some NBH Pro Defenders, and that seems to have done the trick.
