Lets Talk Bad Habits!

Recommended Posts

What Bad habits have you developed playing hockey and what did you do to get over them?

Hopefully this helps someone with the same problem.

~Mine was really common... Skating with my head down, once i got older and a concussion later. I really worked on it! its slowed me down on the ice for a while but its something i got used to after a while!

My worst bad habit is when playing on my off wing is not coming deep enough in my own zone during breakouts to my side and then being forced to make a sloppy or too quick plays up the boards just to get it out of my zone instead of making a nice play to the far winger in the neutral zone or to the center. (chips off the glass or boards often just end up as turnovers)

Lack of patience with the puck. I used to always get nervous playing defence in our end and coming out the zone with offensive pressure from the other team. I'd sometimes try and make a stretch pass that would get intercepted by the opposition, which is annoying, or just bank it off the boards up to a teammate.

Kinda grew outta that though, and while I'm no Ray Bourque or Paul Coffey, I've learned to be much more confident since then.

Yea i used to have this one too, my coach yelled at me a couple times and i stopped doing it. It only happened when we had to skate boards.

Go for the hit or go for the puck, I can't do both.

Saucer passes when they aren't needed.

Defensive zone? What defensive zone? :P

I think slewfoots can be hilarious.

Taking my glove off before a faceoff to itch my face and being caught off gaurd on the drop.

Belittling people for not knowing the greatness that is the 8090.

Eating something stupid before a game.

There are 4 that I have to fight all the time:

1. Not bending at the knees more!

2. Not holding the puck long enough, being in a rush to pass only to realize I had no one on.

3. Leaving my wing to stand in front of the net and then missing the puck sliding through MY corner.

4. Beating the D to the puck and blindly throwing it out front to see no one is out there. Happens twice a game.

Tremendous.

Personally...Trying to force passes to the slot from behind the net and skating past the far post instead of stopping in front on odd man breaks. You can't score from behind the net dumbass.

Same here, gotta shoot more I'm too much of a pass-first kind of player.

not enough puck confidence, altough im getting much better with the puck and taking my time and looking for options, i used to just chip it up the boards, or basically launch it at the first same colored jersey i could do. playing in more rat skates has made me alot more confident with puck and made me look at more options

When I take the puck into the offensive zone (assuming I haven't lost the puck since I skate with my head down), I always end up taking the puck all the way into the corner and losing the puck either with a bad pass into the slot or just a plain old giveaway.

I just can't seem to find any of my teammates during a rush I lead.

I have a bad habit of over thinking things. If I'd just make the pass or shot when I first conceive the idea in my head...I'd be fine...but I wait, and wait and either end up too deep or out of position for the pass...or the guy I want to pass to end up covered.

And, because I don't play anywhere were there is contact...I have a BAD habit of head down.

My philosophy on that is to take the first good play you see and not wait for something better to come along. It really helps when you're playing defense.

One of my worst habits is waiting for something to develop. Usually it's a matter of waiting for a guy that's moving to hit a seam where I can get the puck to him. I don't move my feet as much as I should when I have the puck on my stick.

My indecision is like that...waiting for a better pass...when that doesn't happen...I've lost the good lane I had.

I have a bad habit of playing hockey though i suck incredibly at it.

lets see, I always forget to try to move laterally when carrying the puck, so I rarely make it past anyone, I have a horrible shot because i still am thinking about what foot to kick out when I shoot different shots, and I am still really jumpy with the puck.

I usually get at least one breakaway a game; and while I have the skill to deke the goalies in my league, I wimp out and shoot 5 hole. It still works around a quarter of the time, but my teammates have been giving me a hard time about it lately.

Yeah I've been having the same problem lately. I can be very creative when it comes to playmaking but when it comes to putting on a good deke to get around that last defender or when I get an in close chance on net, I tend to stay very conservative. I have been turning my attention to practicing some fancy deking but this is the hardest to implement because in game situations, the chance to deke comes at you so fast by the time you think of a move, it's too late. I find that I usually think of something I should have done on the bench after the shift is over.
