starskie 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2009 I've done this. I've played offense almost all my life until one day we needed a goalie for our roller hockey team. Strapped up, played pretty well and had a heck of a time playing goalie. Next thing I knew I bought a set of goalie equipment and played goalie every once and a while (when needed or when I felt like it). It's fun to experience a new position every once and a while. Doctor Hook 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2009 I know people who have made the switch permanently from skater to goalie. I also met people who have goalie gear and randomly play net when they feel like it. Like all goalies, these people are nuts (in a good way). You're either a goalie (own gear, enjoy playing in net) or not. There's no in between.
domifan28 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2009 I really wanted to be a goaltender when I was younger. But coming from a small town where there was already two goalies in each division I didn't really get a chance. Plus mom and dad didn't really want the expenses. Although my littlest brother plays goal, and I made sure he got some nice gear.
Ozzman 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2009 My knee is keeping me from playing net too. I should have taken the chance when my goalie buddy was selling his old gear and offered to let me borrow it to try it out.I'd still like to try, when/if my knee gets better. greyraven8 9 Report post Posted March 8, 2009 Play out most of the time; play goal once in a while. Didn't play any goal until my 20's. Dad bought me a set of equipment from an ad in the paper of a retiring goalie - have upgraded the equipment over the years. Started playing regular goalie for a few years in a friday night 'scrub' or 'pickup' group that my dad also played in and occasionally for his sunday morning group. Now it's only when they can't get a goalie for a tuesday afternoon group my dad runs. Like playing in goal once in a while but prefer playing out; if had more time and money for hockey wouldn't mind playing some more hockey that would also include some more goal.A few years ago the goalie on our beer league team got kicked out of a game and I ended up finishing the game playing goal using his equipment. Was falling on my ass a lot - his skates were too dull for me plus a couple sizes too big. All of his equipment was very large on me (he's at least a 1/2 foot taller than me). Also, his trapper and blocker were the opposite hands from mine (luckily girlfriend drove to my house to pick up mine and got them part way through the game). Have also played a few games in goal for beer league with my own goal equipment over the years though I don't think I looked as comedic then (opinions vary). crispy92 14 Report post Posted March 8, 2009 Ive done it in roller. It was so fun we ended up losing 8-6 but it was still greatOn another note, I dont know if this is only with goalies I know but it seems as if when a goalie plays out, they have the sickest set of hands and can pick corners like no tommorow. Why is that
Law Goalie 147 Report post Posted March 8, 2009 Chiefly because we've been watching shooters do it to us for years, so the mechanics of a good shot are second-nature to us; secondarily because we know when a fellow goalie has exposed a spot we can pick. That, and we're used to stickhandling and shooting with a giant chunk of lumber. Put an OPS in our hands and it's like driving a Ferrari after years behind the wheel of a logging truck.
zfyfe 0 Report post Posted March 8, 2009 i have put some thought into doing it in roller hockey. our goalie blows so how much worse could i be? i was a catcher in baseball so i was blocking pitches and what not so i was thinking i would give it a shot whats it going to hurt
Law Goalie 147 Report post Posted March 8, 2009 That's funny zfyfe - there's a thread in the Goalie section right now about a guy who's transitioning from baseball catcher to hockey goalie.
HattrickSwayze 3 Report post Posted March 8, 2009 My friend played baseball as a kid, and I think it helped him a bit when he tried goalie. He had a pretty decent glove hand. You could tell he played baseball though, because he would catch shots that were coming at his chest, just like a catcher. If I knew someone who played goalie, I'd give it a shot to see what it's like. It might be more fun than playing out for all I know.

crazylegs_9 0 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 Ive tried it an because of my temper, it just doesnt fit well, I hate that everytime you make a mistake, its in the back of the net. Much less pressure up on the wing. lol.
sickwilly 37 Report post Posted March 10, 2009 Always played forward, but used to play net once in a while in practices, scrimmages, etc. It's a blast! I'd buy a set of goalie gear just to bring to shinny in case we only had one tender.... but only if I could find close to a full set cheaply.
SidCaeser 0 Report post Posted August 22, 2009 I had a friend two weekends ago fly in to play in a game, and he didn't want to pay the $150 to fly his goalie gear back home. He asked me if I had any desire to play in goal, and I have been thinking about it for over a year now. He said he brought up his back up gear, and wanted to know if I would hold onto it until he decided to do something with it. Well, I run three pick-up games week, and every now and then we are short a goalie. Today, I decided to take the gear just in case we were short a netminder. I wasn't great, and I wasn't awful. Worst thing, I loved it. My positioning, angles, ability to go down & back up is, stick position were all off, but it was exciting. I didn't flince too much when a slapper came my way, and I could tell that fewer slappers were taken. The first hard shot I took hit me square in the noogies, and I felt it, but nothing that brought tears to my eyes. All in all, I want to play again, soon. Just wanted to share. Why is thatOne season of peewee aa, the goalie dresses in player goalie and our backup gets played, the starting goalie got a hatrick in a close game that ended up something like 5-4. I figure it would have to be attributed to the fact that they know a goalies movements because i coudlnt see where else it would come from.I tried goalie once, my dads friend who owns our sports store loaned me his full koho 590 set he was looking to sell (used) and full high end used gear. I wasn't anything great but i did hold my team in i guess for a low scoring (faced few shots) win.
Rayzilla 0 Report post Posted August 23, 2009 About 10-11 years ago, my Friday night shinny game didn't have two regular goalies. The organizer had a set for anyone that wanted to try it. So I said what the heck, I used to strap on those old school sponge block pads when I was a kid during those street "CAR!!!" hockey games. It was a lot harder than I ever thought. Nothing like ball hockey. The moment the player made a single move, I bit and it was easily in the net. But I had fun. So the next week I stopped into a LHS just to 'look' at some gear. I walked out being thousands of dollars lighter in the pocket. Then being the spendaholic that I 'was', I ended up updating those pieces of junk over time and now I would not even play if I had to use that cheaper stuff again.Needless to say, I loved it then and continue to love playing goal now. So in my last 10-11 years, I've only played out about 5-10 times a year (sometimes less) because I would always rather play goalie. But this coming season, I am about to start playing a combination of goal in one division and player in another division. So now I need to update some of my player gear and it is darn confusing with all of the skate choices and fit.

IniNew 53 Report post Posted August 23, 2009 Everyone talking about baseball convertee's. We have a friend playing in his second season of mens league. He played all the way up to college club baseball as a 1st basemen; and his glove is sick. But it's also developed some terrible habits from it. We had a player on our team take a slapper from center ice to dump the puck, and this goalie tried to glove the puck across his body. His reach wasnt long enough, lol. It tipped the edge and went in. JoeyJ0506 192 Report post Posted August 23, 2009 I played once at practice for my college's inline team. I've played baseball, I catch, my entire life and still play in college... didn't help with stopping a puck at all. As mentioned, I have a really quick glove hand, but the thing that I excel at catching in baseball (backhanding short hops thrown too far to my right) really is a terrible habit in goal. I really tend to forget about my stick/blocker hand and try to backhand shots with the trapper. Also, playing the angles of an incoming baseball from a relatively stationary position that is (supposedly) being thrown to my mitt versus learning to cut down angles against an ever changing launching point with the puck (in essence) trying to be placed where I am not doesn't bode well for me. That, and the gear smelled terrible... I'm anal about airing out my ice and inline equipment, and none of it smells at all as a result. This goalie equipment could have gagged a maggot; it really made it hard to focus on stopping the puck fighting the nausea. But, our goalie graduated last year and we have no new goalie coming in that we know of. So, in the interest of keeping the club running I may be switching full time from forward to net. We have the obstacle of getting a new set of gear (our previous goalie owned his own equipment, as did the one before him... meaning nothing was ever purchased towards a "team set") will most likely be our biggest problem. I'm looking forward to the challenge. Also, we're dropping down a tier in skill level after having our asses handed to us nearly every game last year, which may help ease the pain of converting to goal. We'll see how my ego handles it... I probably faced about 60 shots by the end of the game. Hence me just sitting around on my knees towards the end of the film. The first game I played I forgot to take off my skate guards and bit it big time. Another time I was pulled for an extra attacker and as I went over the boards (which are 5inches higher than normal ones) I did a flip and nosedived.
ts.krajewski 0 Report post Posted August 23, 2009 I play roller and ice, and one time at roller my friend wanted to play out so I used his goalie pads. I had an ice game the next day, never again will I play goalie the night before ice. I could barley jump over the boards for line changes. All said though goalie was a lot of fun to play and I would want to play it if pads didnt cost so much.
GH_ID 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2009 I've had a big opportunity come up to play goal and get a great deal on the equipment. I always wanted to play in net when I was a kid, but didn't really get the support from my folks. I'm looking to take a few classes at the beginning to get the basics and then try to go to pick-up and see how it goes.
