Avery IS back on the Rangers

Recommended Posts

I read an interesting bit on either TSN or Sportsnet on the whole issue, it broke down the possibilities, but they best solution for Dallas outside of a trade, was to just leave him in the minors for the remainder of his contract. Takes his salary off the cap as long as he is down, which is far better than letting someone claim him off waivers and the Stars getting stuck with part of his salary. If I were the Stars, I would just tell him thats whats happening unless someone gets desperate *cough Rangers*.

The best thing for the Stars is to have someone else want him so they don't have to pay him or take some hit to their cap. Worst case, they'll buy him out this summer.

Sather on Avery and Tortorella:

"Sean has not played many games, but he's worked hard, his attitude has been great, they've won three of four. He's got one assist but its AHL, the NHL is a lot different. He's coming along, we'll deal with that in the next week...He doesn't have the history with Sean that we do. Over time, you learn to love him like I do."

hmmm should be interesting to say the least.

If the Pres and GM Sather wants him in the lineup, he'll be in the lineup. Also considering Torts is new to the organization (this time), I don't think he'll have much say unless the team gets real chemistry back and is winning by the time Aves is ready to come back.

The difference is that Tortorella will throw slats under the bus publicly if he tries to force Avery into the lineup.

Much like I said a few years ago about Bobby Clarke and the Flyers, the Rangers will not win a Stanley cup with Sather as the GM.

Nice job, Slats, if he indeed is grabbing Avery. Way to shove him in the face of your talent that didn't want him back to begin with.

I feel bad for Mark Bell.

First the DUI (mind you, his own fault)...then Toronto HAS to take him to get Vesa....new coach...hello minors. Rangers pick him up...second (nay, third) chance at the NHL???

Maybe not:

You've got to wonder why the Rangers even picked him up in the first place. I would like the Leafs to grab him and let him play after the deadline. I'd rather have him play than call up someone like Tlusty who should stay in the minors.

As someone who hates the Rangers, I love this soap opera. I like that they think that Avery belongs in the NHL.

I think that it would be absolutely amazing if the Isles claimed him. Wang is nuts, so it's not like it's not possible, and they've got lots of cap space and that team isn't really going anywhere for a little while. It would be hilarious, though.

I think he was a back up incase the Avery thing didn't work out. Also I look at him as a replacement for Voros for next season if not sooner.

p.s. Avery is back in the big apple again, it's official. I'm ready to see some fireworks between him and Torts and the rest of the players, should be an interesting end of the season to say the least :D Maybe this whole craziness will work out and he'll add some spark, I mean he is after all a pretty good hockey player when you cut through the BS, better than a lot of other guys on the team and in the league... stranger things have happened so who knows.

Picked up off waivers by the Rangers this morning.

He's baaaack!

As expected, the New York Rangers claimed Sean Avery on re-entry waivers today and the super pest is back in the NHL.

The Rangers are responsible for half of Avery's remaining contract - another three years with an annual cap hit of $3.875 million. The Dallas Stars are responsible for the other half.

It is unknown if Avery, who had two goals and one assist in six games with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL, will be in the lineup Thursday against the Islanders.

This will be Avery's second tour of duty with the Rangers after spending two years with the Blueshirts under recently fired head coach Tom Renney.

The 28-year old Avery could get a frosty welcome from current Rangers' head coach John Tortorella who has stated in the past that he is no fan of Avery's antics.

As part of the NHL on TSN panel earlier in the season, Tortorella was highly critical of Avery following his comments about actress Elisha Cuthbert, a former Avery flame and current girlfriend of Flames' blue liner Dion Phaneuf.

''Enough is enough. He's embarrassed himself, he's embarrassed the [Dallas] organization, he's embarrassed the league and he's embarrassed his teammates, who have to look out for him. Send him home. He doesn't belong in the league.''

Rangers' general manager Glen Sather sees Avery as a boost to a struggling Rangers squad and believes that his coach and new acquisition will be able to co-exist.

''He doesn't have the history with Sean that we do,'' Sather said on a conference call last week. ''Over time, you learn to love him, just like I do.''

In 23 games with the Stars this season, the Pickering, Ontario native has three goals and seven assists while racking up 77 minutes in penalties.

I'll bet someone like the Islanders or Thrashers claim him off re-entry waivers ahead of the Rangers.

So, what would you like to bet? Both Snow and Waddell have to look at risk vs reward. Since neither the Islanders or Thrashers will make the playoffs, the risk isn't worth the reward. If either team claims Avery to try and force Sather to deal for him, Sather can say sorry, I'm not trading for him. Can't you see that playing Avery in Hartford is simply the tune-up for Broadway. The other teams know Avery will never benefit them, even if they try to use him as a bargaining piece for a draft pick. So, what are we betting for?

He's under contract for more than just this year, any teams below the Rangers that have interest in him would be picking him up for those years, not this season. It would allow them to jump start the off season rebuilding with an inexpensive pickup now and if it's an utter failure they could move him in the off season or buy him out without the circus lasting an entire year.

If you assume that he is actually going to behave, it's no bigger risk for those teams than the Rangers. In fact, I would say those teams are risking less than NY would. Of the 19 teams with fewer points than the Rangers today, I wouldn't be surprised if six of them took a chance on him in order to either make the playoffs, start rebuilding or sell more tickets.

;)

Fair weather fan?

Best to wait till after the trade deadline to pick a new team.

There are some things a team can do that force you to turn your back on them. This is one of those things for a large number of Ranger fans.
