Hockey gear commercials in Canada?

Recommended Posts

Just curious as an american. When I watch hockey, I never see a commercial for sticks, skates, etc, or for the brand as a whole. I'm wondering if In canada you see commercials with the staal's hawking NBH gear or Vinny Lecavelier selling CCM, the way I see Ryan Howard and Justin Upton selling Adidas baseball gear. I don't see much on youtube either, except old nike commercials (the unemployed goalies because of Fedorov or Sundin, etc.)

I really can not recall many commercials. I have seen the odd one with Crosby - but usually selling the clothing line.

I certainly do not remember seeing any commercials saying "buy this series of protective gear".

Maybe because the game itself is essentially a big brand showcase they skip on the ads?

Yea, I've seen the early crosby commercials for reebok, selling crosby and barely mentioning hockey gear, lol

Easton also has one out there right now in the 'states. It reminds me of the videos on the site- kind of a small rink, and shows Getzlaf, Heater, possibly Gaborik and the likes.

And like Micheal said, some RBK and CCM ones. That muscle system one is played where the muscles form into the skape of the U+.

There was the Crosby RBK ad, but it wasn't really showcasing any particular equipment. The tagline was basically, hey look Crosby plays with RBK.

I don't remember seeing any hockey gear/stick commercials on Canadian TV. Personally, I think that the vast majority of viewers don't buy hockey gear, they don't play...

I've seen some Nike sparq training ad's geared towards hockey. Usualy showcasing all of their training gear. i.e. speed ladder, balance board ect.

Sid is plastered all over the TV here... Tim Hortons, Gatorade, Reebok, etc.

like the guy above was saying, Nike Bauer was pushing the SPARQ commercials alot, but not much else. Im guessing some of these companies don't have the budget to drop millions on airtime.

The only ads I have seen are the U+ skate ads. You'd think in our hockey mad country, where I can watch 2-3 nhl games and 1 junior game almost every night, + all the hockey highlight/talk shows, that they would have more hockey ads, but they are mostly beer. Mmmm....beer.

Who remembers the CCM commercial with Vinny and St. Louis in a half pipe promoting skates? I always thought that commercial was bad, when would you ever skate and do jumps on a half pipe?

I wouldn't think Canada would get many equipment commercials. Just think: America doesn't see alot of ads for football or baseball equipment. Maybe random shoes but thats about it...

I remember that one commercial(I think it was only online) with Brodeur, Lecavalier, Ovechkin and Thornton for CCM. I thought it was kind of funny the way everyone said their name with a pretty heavy accent and then you hear a husky, no accent(you know what I mean) JOE THORNTON.

Found it:

Sometimes, there is some UA commercial... That's about it. Oh, and the Source for Sports commercials. It's usually a player playing in the rink and all of the sudden pops out of the ice and into the store and a store clerk hand them a stick or gloves or something like that.

The last commercial that I saw with a star was the Joe Thornton one head locking a clerk. I thought that was pretty funny.

I think there are more spots from the big stores (Sportchek, SFS etc...) that feature gear than actual commercials from the Hockey companies themselves.

We see a fair few, like Ryan Howard/David Ortiz/B.J. Upton selling Adidas baseball gear/Dick's sporting goods. Plus under armour ads/nike sparq ads featuring the likes of LaDanian Tomlinson and Ray Lewis. And of course ads for basketball shoes.

I have never really thought about it, but we rarely do see equipment commercials. Weird.

I guess the difference would be in that CCM commercial those guys wouldn't have to introduce themselves, everyone would know who they were already...lol.

True, but I am talking more like specific gear, like shoulder pads or whatever.

Here in Vancouver and on TV there isn't much direct advertising by Hockey manufacturers.

Here is what I see:

Some of the LHS's advertise on the All Sports Radio Station via some of the Manufacturers such as Firstar performance apparell etc. (Based in BC)

Also we had Sande Hockey sponsor the morning show guys from the Team1040 AM during the Vancouver Giants Intermission in a shooting contest

What we see on TV is Product placement during a lot of Crosby's tv ads for Tim Hortons, Gatorade etc... In the latest Timmy Ho's ad he is on the bus with his pens teammates and the bus has trouble and so Sid see's out the window some kids playing shinny on an outdoor rink where he walks up to the kids playing holding a 8K Helmet, a new 10K Stick, and his 9K Pumps and asks: IS it ok if I can play too?

We also see some during the MCDonalds new ads for their Mini Helmets promotion with the little goalie and now little sniper. (Those ad's are priceless! :D )

I found some old-school Cooper commercials fråm the 80s I believe, about the gear itself and not showing any particular player endorsing them. I assume these must've on the air back then?

Cooper XL7 Helmet

Cooper Roos Skates

During CSN broadcasts of the San Jose Sharks they advertise a lot for the Hockey X=Sport Store in Oakland. They all show that new Ovechkin CCM U+ Crazy Light commercial from time to time. The one where his head is in the kids locker. Thats been about it around here though.

I don't really think direct marketing like that is actually necessary enough for companies to drain their resources on TV spots. If you want to play hockey you're going to have to go to the hockey shop, or to an online retailer, and buy gear. Given the amount of money you'll be investing in gear you're more than likely going to do your own research on what's available anyway. Or if you're a long time hockey player you're probably already aware of what's on the market and have established preferences. Most hockey companies probably look at the endorsement deals and equipment they provide to elite level teams/players as their direct marketing.

As for football gear, outside of the peewee level players aren't really buying their gear. There really isn't anything like rec league hockey in football terms, and I doubt there's enough of a "semi-pro" market to make the cost of TV ads worth it.

Here's the recent ads that I can remember featuring hockey equipment:

Mission: used to run a number of ads, but obviously nothing since they were bought out.

Reebok: Has featured Sid in a number ads, usually by himself doing some nifty stickhandling

Warrior: Nothing on TV

Bauer: Haven't seen any recent TV ads, but I know they did when Nike owned them

Nike: Nike features their training apparel/footwear with Canadian Jr. athletes around the World Jrs.

CCM: They have creepy AO ads running right now that need to be seen to be believed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKTvD3LRSLs

Sherwood: Nothing
