Winter Classic 4

Casual fans want big names with highlight goal potential. That is the Caps young team with Ovechkin. Not to mention the Caps have had some great games vs. the B's in the past couple of seasons.

The way I see it, the Flyers have just as many big names as the Caps do, if not more. Carter, Richards, Timonen, Gagne, and Briere. Claude Giroux is going to be a fantastic player in the NHL, and I see it as soon as next season. Braydon Coburn is emerging as a top-4 defensemen in the league.

EDIT - Granted, the Caps will take the "Superstar Battle" 9 times out of 10 due to Ovechkin, I still see the Flyers with just as much star power, if not more.

Flyers/Bruins is going to be a great matchup.

is there anywhere outdoors that they could do the game where the ice wouldn't be crappy? it seems like it doesn't matter where they have it - it is always going to be fighting a losing battle

There is no doubting that to a real hockey fan, Philly has more big time names on their roster, but to the casual fan, the many who will be watching the WC, they couldn't tell you what position Timonen played or even what team he plays for. I have no problem with Philly being in it this year, only if the caps are matched up with the Rags at NYS. If not, theeenn ill be pissed.

Ok, I'll give you Carter and Richards, and maybe even Gagne, as he is starting to get back to being the player he used to be. But Briere? and did you REALLY throw Giroux and Braydon Coburn in the mix?? I thought the discussion was STARpower. They are good, solid players, but by no means stars. Briere had two great seasons and cashed in. I would no longer consider him a star, anymore than I would Drury. Both good, sometimes great players, but not stars.

Ovechkin, Semin, (maybe Fedorov, but he is WELL over the hill) will always win the "Superstar Battle" over the two (three?) big names on Philly. Granted, this is coming from a Rangers fan, but I think your post was saturated with homerism.

Of course it was saturated with homerism. Responding to the guy with Mike Green as his avatar. There's homerism all across the board.

Also, defensemen will never be considered superstars until they score Mike Green-esque points every year. And if you read my post correctly, I said Giroux and Coburn are going to be stars in the league, not now. Give Giroux the same amount of time Carter and Richards have had, and I guarantee you he's the better player in the end.

bruins and flyers would be a nice nhl classic on the pond.introduce the 70s bad boys from the day from both teams before the game just to get things rollin.

They will probably go with jerseys similar to the 70's style when it was the Broad Street Bullies vs. the Big, Bad Bruins.

They better include Cooperalls into the design.

Cooperalls were worn in the 80s. LOL

I am so not a fan of Boston teams, but I go to Boston twice a year, and it is a great city....and Fenway is a great park. I think it is a great place to hold the game because of the almost non-existent foul territory, giving spectators a closer view.

Piss poor logic that having the flyers play prevents them from playing in another one against the Penguins. If it's ok to have the Pens play a second game, why can't the Flyers. If there isn't a Canadian team next year, Caps and Rangers is my guess.

The top of the monster seats are going to be the best seats at any outdoor game to date.

Then you'd see the Pens and Flyers play in 2 winter classics already when there are tons of other teams? Eventually Canadian teams are going to start clamoring for them to be featured in a game and the Rangers v. Caps series was the reason the Caps weren't allowed to play so then they would make those 2 teams a focus, that doesn't seem likely.

I guess you missed that one. Why would it be ok to have the pens play in a second game against the flyers before the other teams got their shot? The fact that it would be the Flyers second game is irrelevant. I also think the NHL is terrified of trying to fill a 100k+ seat building during a recession. A building thatisn't full will look really bad on TV.

I think the NHL could fill a 100k building, but not with the Pens and Flyers playing.

Really? I think it could be very possible. However, on the topic of other teams getting their shot, I'm all for it, but I have no interest watching a game between, say the Yotes and Kings as a "Winter Classic." Talk about poor ratings.

In Toronto, yes. In the middle of PA, three or more hours from anything resembling a population center, not so much.

From today's Boston Globe:

Bettman, here for the Winter Classic announcement, acknowledged afterward that the league needs to address Canada’s yearning to host a Jan. 1 outdoor game. “We are aware of it,’’ he said. “We started to focus on it this year but we couldn’t get it together.’’ The league, in fact, had designs on setting up one in Calgary for the same day as the Fenway bash, but did not have ample time to get the necessary consent of the Players’ Association
