Play It Again Sports

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever sold old equipment to a Play It Again Sports? I have a ton of old stuff that I'm really lazy about and would love to get some money for. I'd imagine however that they are very selective with what they take, and that they probably offer very little. I figured I'd ask anyway before I begin the online sale process.

You get 30% of what they think they can sell it for.

Don't expect much.

They don't offer you much.

Before I knew what I was doing with sizes, I jumped at a pair of vector pros (silver ones) from the teacher in a hockey class. They were in great shape but about a size too big for me. I took them to a PIA (Chicago) and they offered me $35. The guy told me he probably couldn't get much for them (right). I didn't do it. Maybe I should have tried to haggle but at the time all they had was mid to low end hockey stuff anyway.

I put a flier up where I played and sold them for what I paid for them $140. If it's stuff you don't care how much you get/don't want to hassle take it to a PIA. If you want to try to get more back probably ebay or craigslist is a better bet.

Like others have said they will not give you much. I brought a brand new synergy 2 blade in there to see if i could trade the blade plus some cash for a different pattern and they offered me $10 store credit for my blade.

30% isn't much, I'm surprised they can build a franchise out of it. They must get a lot of equipment from some other source? Pardon my ignorance, I've never actually seen a play it again sports in person until a few days ago.

How do you figure?

Quick math - you have something that they think they can sell for $100. They offer you $30. You sell it to them. They sell it for $100. They get $70.

The PIAS by me is actually pretty good about hockey stuff. Lots of new/pro-return goal stuff, usually I bring stuff I wouldn't get much for or I don't mind getting rid of cheap. Kindof got jobbed on my one90's but I needed cash quick, nothing you can do about it now.

I sold a pair of 110 XP custom skates to them last year and got $50 for them.

The best part was that a RDV employee was telling me about how bad his skates fit him. He pulls them out and I start laughing. And he's like "What?" And I point to the inside of the skate where it has "JR Boucicaut" stamped on it. He didn't get it (new kid, didn't know my last name) and then I pull out my driver's license.

i agree with what everyone else on here is saying - you will probably get about 30% of what they are actually worth.

although there isnt a PIAS in my area anymore - it burnt down due to arson from the new young store manager..

I understand the profit they would make, but I don't understand how anyone would sell something skates valued at $100 for $30. They must depend a lot on parents who are happy to get anything for skates that their kids outgrow.

Yeah, that's why you see store credit (you get more) and consignment (they put the product on the rack, if it sells, you get more.)

Yeah a few of my LHS's do that, totally forgot about it. Makes sense to me now.

Game stop has made a mint on screwing people over on trade ins and reselling used video games, dunno why sports equipment wouldn't be similar...

Screwing people over? Game stop and PIAS don't make anyone come in and trade their stuff, they give the option of actually getting some amount out of gear that you are done using, whatever amount it may be, rather than it just sitting in the garage. You might get less than you think you deserve for your equipment that is in "perfect" condition is worth but its better than getting $0. Try thinking before your talk.

You should try googling game stop's business practices if you think I'm wrong about them. I was giving an example of a company that makes a large profit on buying items and reselling them. If you want to read it as me insulting PIAS that's your problem.

with two diff PIA and two diff owners here I can honestly say it really depends on the particular store you have in your area. One here is kind of shady and will give you as little as possible, the other very clearly spells out their process of selling.

They generally price it at 50% of new, and consignment you make 50% of that amount. Cashing out is half of consigned value since they're stuck with it if it doesn't sell, trade value is I believe 10% above cash value which makes it around the 30% JR mentioned. Understanding these rough numbers which I believe are part of the general business guide for PIA will help you determine if you want to try your luck there or on your own via Ebay, Craigslist, etc. I know I've had my gas money runs through the closet of stuff I don't use anymore before heading into PIA

Wow, you guys are lucky that the PIAS in your areas will actually TAKE your gear. I stopped going to the ones here in CA because all of them would say "sorry, we're not taking hockey equipment right now..." when I would bring gear in - and this was stuff in good shape, too - not old crappy equipment. Then I discovered the joys of eBay and this wonderful place :).

A better bet might be craigslist. I've sold stuff in a sports junkies before (consignment) and didn't get much for it. There wasn't any awesome gear but their prices go down the longer its the there. So if they start it at $100, after two weeks it drops to $90, then every week it would go down something like 10% until it hit the minimum (can't remember if I set it or they did) and you earned a percentage off that. Wasn't worthwhile because if you didn't come claim your money they wouldn't pay you. So I was driving over there every week to check on my stuff.

The PIA in my area is pretty good and one of the few places I can go for gear. I got some pretty good deals there when my daughter started playing hockey. When she out grew the gear, traded it in for new stuff. Just gotta know your prices.

PIAS can offer whatever price they want, if it is too low for someone then don't sell. My issue with

PIAS is with the one in my area that offers very poor skate fitting advice to new players. I have seen more than one beginner on the ice with huge skates on, caving in at the ankles and the player who is learning to skate in the first place hardly able to even move. Doesn't give a aspiring hockey player much hope to go on with the sport. I am hardly any kind of expert but I always talk to these poor souls and let them know what's going on. I have been in PIAS for other things and always check the skates out. I play dumb and ask what size I would need and never get a remotely correct answer. I then educate them as much as they will listen , so maybe they don't screw the next beginner out of the sport before they start.

The Old Cranberry Location next to North Park Lounge? I heard it was arson but not the manager of the store. That's a shame because that place was actually a legitimate place I could go to pick up some pretty nice gear. They always had a better and more expansive selection than the Dick's down the road. I cannot believe that's been three or so years ago already, I remember going in there as a kid... I'm getting old fast
