Cracked sole... Anybody ever deal with monkey's customer service?

Recommended Posts

I bought a pair of old stock CCM 852 Super Tacks back in January 2009. I've used them maybe a dozen times, three of those pickup hockey, the rest being public skating with the kids. I removed the insole and found that the sole underneath was cracked all over where either the rivets or staples went throught it (see picture).

Has this ever happened to anyone else? I called CCM and they said since I bought it from Hockey Monkey, I'd need to go through their customer service. Anybody ever get repairs or replacements through monkey? I shot an email off last night, haven't yet heard back, but their site says it may take up to 24 hour for them to respond.

BTW, Anybody know if this problem is pervasive with CCM/Reebok skates? I'm eye-ing an old stock (2005) RBK 8k (non-pump). Anybody have any experience with that skate?

Thanks!

Yeah, they shipped a box of stuff to my house, the crackhead UPS guy delivered it to the wrong address, the box got lost, and within about two weeks the Monkey refunded my money and filed the lost items with UPS. Pretty good considering I could have been out of money longer.

852 models are 5 plus yrs old. So, even though NOS, they've been sitting in a warehouse for quite some time, prob not in great climate controlled conditions, the plastic could just be weak from age.. Having said that, CCM skates with the plastic sole do crack over time, but I don't ever recall seeing cracks on new skates. it looks like the rivet on your skate was starred with too much pressure and that caused the plastic to crack. Are your holders original, meaning factory installed or did someone F with them. Web sites do all kind of things to stock and sell it like new, never telling the customer. I had one guy come in with a pair of grafs he bought new and the cobras were riveted in. he though he was buying a new skate, not a jury rigged one. If your skate was altered and they did not tell you this, then they should take it back. If not altered, CCM is very good at replacing items, even if outside the 90 day warranty. Best bet for you is to contact CCM directly if out of warranty, not much your retailer can do.

I had a similar problem with my 1152's a few years back (mine cracked from an errant puck). They were still under warrantee (there's a difference between the boot and the footbeds or something - so be sure to check). Anyway, I shipped the skates back to CCM (thru my LHS) and they replaced the carbon fibre soles actually (I would have thought it was cheaper to replace, but what do I know?).

Anyway, I never had another problem with the skates.

I'm guessing these are the issues:

1. There may be only a 30 day warranty on the boot.

2. A lot of sites have a no return policy on sale items.

Pretty sure the skate wasn't messed with. It's cracking not only at the rivets, but also where the sole has staples.

I did call CCM and they have an agreement with monkey. They don't handle customer service for products sold by monkey, since monkey distributes so much stuff, monkey handles customer service themselves. Guess I'll just need to wait and see what monkey will do...

Thanks!

That's fine, but does Monkey provide customer service after the manufacturers warranty has expired? Or do they tell you so sorry, too late. That's what I like about customers contacting CCM directly, for products outside the warranty period that is. CCM is great in that regard.

How much did you pay for the skates?

Does the crack in the sole hurt your foot or bother you when you are skating?

As jimmy said, these are pretty old stock skates. Those plastic innersoles do crack often enough. If you got a great sale price, then don't worry, be happy.

Didn't pay a lot, a little more than a Franklin with the shipping. The cracks don't effect comfort or skating yet, but I'm afraid that one hard shot at either the holders or the bottom of the boot will cause the sole to disintegrate which might not feel nice when my foot is in the skate.

If monkey refuses to do anything with the skates, I was thinking about coating the sole with some diluted epoxy. That should at least hold it together through the rigors of skating with the kids. What do you guys think?

Thanks!

don't mean to highjack the thread, but does monkey deliver what you ordered? because some guys on this forum said that they mess up orders and have poor customer support. I am asking this because I want to order a pair of x:50 in Europe so I can't afford sending them back once they get here

Don't worry. I know guys who have those skates that I've been sharpening for years and they have had the same cracks or worse for about a decade, no problem. Your skate won't fall apart unless the rivets loosen, then just put in another rivet in a virgin hole.

I'm guessing these are the issues:

2. A lot of sites have a no return policy on sale items.

90 day warranty on the boo FROM THE DATE OF SALE

1 year on holders and steel.

No return on sale items does not mean no warranty. Warranty means you return the skates to the store you purchased them from and then they deal with the manufactureer. In my case after the store sent them to Bauer, their (Bauer) customer service kept me updated on status. In my case they gave me a newer model to replace the discontinued model that was sent back to them under warranty. I'd say you have a good chance to get a new model skates (unless HM prefers to refund you to avoid the trouble of dealing w/ the manufacturer.

Another company simply refunded me for the skates I sent them back because the tendon guard broke. The boots were like 4 months past their warranty period. I didn't have to female dog at them. Just sent them and e-mail w/pictures and asked if there was anything that could be done about the problem. You'd be surprised, but the company's name is HG.

good points. typo on 30/90 days, but you'd think by now I'd know they'd send it to the manufacturer.

Just a quick update... I'm giving HM's customer service a thumbs down because they said there was nothing they could do as the warranty had expired. That being said, I'm giving CCM/Reebok's customer support a big thumbs up, I called them up and told them how HM replied, so they told me to send the skates to them. I called for a status today and they said their skates should not crack like mine and that a new pair of U+ 09 are on their way as replacements.

i attempted to ask 2 different people at different times about checking patterns in person. they kept saying it wasnt possible since the warehouse was on the other side of the building. i guess its not possible to call the warehouse when you check someones order to see if they can look at a specific blade pattern to see how similar it is to one that is out of stock.

My feelings are actually mixed about the new skates. My feet are shaped funny and the 852s fit great. Won't know how the new skates fit until I get them...
