fawn111 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2009 how come they only make Good Baseball movies... I mean, Slaphsot, yes a true classic, but Mystery Alaska was ok, not great....Miracle..... ehhh, if anyone saw the the 1980's Olympics then no reason to watch it. It doe not do it justice. Here's a few baseball movies, Field of DreamsBull DurhamMajor League (Only the first one)Bad News Bears (The original... still to this day one of the greatest films ever made)The NaturalEight Men Out (About the 1919 White Sox supposedly throwing the playoffs)A League of Their own (Tom Hanks makes this movie great.)And don't get me started on Football movies... Save for Rudy, they all kinda suck.... though an honorable mention for Eighties cheese goes All the Right Moves.

Save for Rudy, they all kinda suck.... though an honorable mention for Eighties cheese goes All the Right Moves.Friday Night Lights is a great football movie, as is We Are Marshall and Remember the Titans. As for hockey movies, there have only been about 7 or 8 (not including all the Ducks Seqs.). I enjoy them all, even the Ducks. But Slapsot, Miracle and Mystery are my favorites. Not only did I watch the the 80 Olympics (in 1980), but read Boys of Winter, Herb's biography, and just about every other book or documentary... and still love watching the movie. jmiami 4 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 Can we all agree that there have not been enough hockey movies made? I guess it is a reflection of the perceived popularity of the sport in the US and producers are afraid to take risks, but still. Damn!I am waiting for "The Rocket" to arrive from Netflix anyday now, and can't wait. Thank God somebody in Canada saw fit to spend on what was obviously a good-sized flick. They should do more of that up there. I never saw "Youngblood", but will queue that one as well. I think I saw "Rob Lowe" when it came out, and figured "oh jeez". But I see a lot of MSH'ers seem to dig it, so worth a look. The Mighty Ducks series...saw the first one on a plane and that was enough for me. I am still bummed out that the Disney ownership chose to name an NHL team after a kid's movie back in the day. "Miracle" was well done and moving, but having seen the whole thing unfold real-time back in 1980 is tough to replace. I still remember Walter Cronkite delivering the news of the USA vs Russia win, (cause the game was not shown live), with the score posted over his shoulder. I can't remember Cronkite's quote exactly but it was along the lines of "...to put this in perspective...it is as if a junior varsity football team had gone out and defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers...". Still gives me chills."Mystery Alaska" was okay, kind of sweet. The producer and co-writer, David Kelly, was Capt of the Princeton hockey team back in the day. Not a small accomplishment. I take my hat off to him for making a movie about a sport he obviously loves."Slapshot" is in my opinion still the title-holder as far narrative features about hockey. I actually attended the World Premiere, which was held in New Haven, CT. at the York Square Theater. Newman was an ex-Yalie and wanted to show the town some love, so arranged for premiere there. Me and my buddy were front and center as Newman walked past us in the lobby (we were 12 years old). We both pointed our fingers at him gun-style and said "Your autograph or your life!". He chuckled, got in a Butch Cassidy shooting stance and went "Pow!". It was only later I learned that he never signed autographs. Oh well. Later that night, as the director was introducing the film, Newman stands up in the back row, holding up a can of beer and yells out "This one's for Bulgaria!..." Gotta love Paul Newman, and gotta love the friggin' '70's. I highly recommend a documentary called "The Chiefs" about a minor-league hockey team in Quebec. Great stuff, and it stays with you regarding the commitment to play pro hockey at any expense. Ultimately depressing stuff though. Be warned. It's on Netflix. I'm gonna share a quick story about a made for TV hockey-flick called "The Deadliest Season" (1977). It starred Michael Moriarty and Paul D'Amato (who played "Dr. Hook" McCraken in "Slapshot"). I honestly can't remember if I liked it or not when it came on the air. I would imagine I did. Again, I was 12. But the reason I bring it up is that I saw it being made in the Hartford Civic Center(1977 again). My parents were antique buffs, and there was an antique show at the HCC. The antique show was in an annex or such. Seeing as I didn't have much interest in antiques at the time, I started to wander, and soon found myself at ice level of the main arena. And what do you know? Someone is shooting a movie! A bunch of extras/fans were positioned in a corner of the rink, and yelling/banging on the glass on cue as Moriarty got roughed up by some tough guy. More fun to watch though, were a bunch of other hockey players (who were certainly pros, and probably members of the Hartford Whalers, or it may have been the New England Whalers back then), lined up on the other side of the rink, shooting shots with a tennis ball against a goalie. Yes, a tennis ball. They were having a blast. These cats were basically background players on break and would stop shooting upon the "action" call from across the ice so they wouldn't f*ck up the scene being filmed with their tennis ball activity. So as you can imagine, this whole thing is kind of cool for a 12 year old kid to watch, especially since I had been playing hockey from age 6. Finally the shoot wraps, and Moriarty comes off the ice, obviously exhausted from a long day. He is untying his skates on a chair a few feet away from me in the rink tunnel. No one else around, just him and me. Note that I had never seen "Bang the Drum Slowly" yet, or had any idea what an amazingly talented actor Michael Moriarty was.Me: "...are you a real hockey player...or just an actor?"Moriarty: "...no I'm...I'm just an actor"Me "...hmmm...."I then turned and walked away. I work in the film industry today, that's why I'm bustin' so long on this thread (please forgive me). We need more hockey flicks. I'm gonna do all I can to change that.
